TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — Paul and Barnabas continue their
travels, spreading the faith and unifying the churches
(Acts 14:21-27).
Psalm — I will praise your name for ever, my king
and my God (Psalm 145).
VERDADERA COMUNIDAD
CRISTIANA
Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
IGLESIA
“Iglesia” en griego significa convocación, o
asamblea en latín, porque somos llamados a
ser miembros de la misma.

Second Reading — John’s vision of God dwelling
with the human race (Revelation 21:1-5a).
Gospel — As Jesus has loved us, so we must love
one another (John 13:31-33a, 34-35).

TREASURES FROM OUR
TRADITION
The French Revolution swept the church in France away
in an astonishing way, stripping the nation of every
possible vestige of the faith, not merely shuttering
churches, but using them as staging areas for pagan
raves and romps. While millions of faithful simply went
underground and hung on for the ride, even the sevenday week was demolished along with the names of
the months. What emerged from the chaos was the
Napoleonic Code of 1792 governing church life, and
therefore marriage law in France, French Canada, and
elsewhere. The code makes civil marriage mandatory
for all citizens.
In practice, when the faithful marry, they go first to the
City Hall. There, the mayor performs the civil marriage,
usually accompanied by a patriotic speech about
the duties of the citizen, particularly in the rearing
of children. Then, typically after a lunch, everyone
goes off to change into more festive attire for the
LITURGICAL
wedding liturgy, featuring consent, the exchange of
rings, and the nuptial blessing. Sadly, only a minority
of citizens today celebrate even the civil form of the
rite, and a fraction of those continue on to the church.
For those who do celebrate the liturgy of marriage,
however, there is near certainty that the spouses are
active worshipers, and that they will later present their
children for baptism. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
JUBILEE YEAR OF
MERCY
Jubilee Day for Youth
This Sunday’s “Youth Jubilee” previews July’s World
Youth Day in Krakow. Its theme from Matthew 5:7,
“Blessed are the merciful,” echoes Pope Francis’
warning that “the practice of mercy is waning in the
wider culture.” In countercultural witness, therefore,
“the time has come,” says Francis, “for the Church to
take up the joyful call to mercy once more. It is time
to return to the basics and to bear the weaknesses
and struggles of our brothers and sisters.” Jesus
affirms the same in today’s Gospel. “As I have
loved you, so you also should love one another”
(John 13:34). Francis concludes, “The Church’s very
credibility is seen in how she shows merciful and
compassionate love.” Jesus too asserts, “This is how
all will know that you are my disciples, if you have
love for one another” (John 13:35). Thus mercy
“makes young” the Church, the world, and everyone.
“Mercy is the force that reawakens us to new life and
instills in us the courage to look to the future with
hope” (Misericordiae Vultus, 10).

MISERICORDIA

muestra misericordia y amor compasivo”.
10). —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. | Citas del Papa Copyright © 2015,

ABOUT THE ACA
Each January, in collaboration with
the pastors and administrators from
all the parishes, missions, and communities across
the Diocese of Tucson, we renew our support of
the Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA). The Appeal is
an annual fundraising effort that raises money for
the financial support of the Catholic charities and
ministries which serve people throughout the
Diocese. We do this by sharing the boundless love
and mercy we have received from the Holy Father.
By sharing this love and mercy we provide hope,
comfort and connection to the families, children and
individuals throughout our Diocese.
Your gifts of mercy:
•
Strengthens our Catholic Schools and their
teachers to give children a quality education
grounded on the values of our faith.
•
Prepares our teachers of religious education who
support parents in their responsibility to hand on
the faith to their children.
•
Reaches out to the littlest and weakest among us
through the programs and services of Catholic
Community Services that assist struggling
families, the disabled, the elderly, victims of
domestic violence and young mothers.
•
Promotes the sanctity and dignity of all human
life from conception to natural death.
•
Engages and welcomes our young people to
participate and to stay connected to our faith.
•
Encourages and invites vocations to the
priesthood and religious life and supports the
education of our future priests.
y misericordia, podemos ofrecer esperanza, consuelo y
basada en los valores de nuestra fe;
trasmitir la fe a sus hijos;
jóvenes;
muerte natural;
con nuestra fe;
sacerdotes.
I pray and I ask you to pray with me that we will unite
to share the love and mercy given to us with others
and ensure that each of our charities and ministries
has the resources it needs to continue His mission.
Thank you and God bless you.
