Los Mandatos formales Polite Commands The commands are in the imperative mood, so they are also called imperatives. In Spanish there are six command forms, one for each of the words that mean you, tú, usted, vosotros, and ustedes, and two for nosotros. In this unit we will examine all of them except the vosotros form. To form the formal commands for most verbs follow these steps: 1. First, start with the first person singular, the yo form, of the verb in the present tense. 2. Drop the o and add endings that are the opposite of what they are in the present tense; ar verbs will take e endings and er and ir verbs will take a endings. ciento noventa y nueve 199 Look at the examples below. (Ex. Let’s begin.) In Spanish we have two ways of forming the nosotros command. We can use the future with ir construction or we can use the true command form, the imperative. Native speakers prefer the vamos a construction to give nosotros commands. Vamos a cantar. Cantemos. Let’s sing Let’s sing. The vamos a construction can only be used for positive commands. You must use the true imperative for negative commands. To form the imperative for most verbs the rule is the same as that for the formal commands. First, start with the first person singular, the yo form, of the verb in the present tense. Drop the o and add endings that are the opposite of what they are in the present tense; -ar verbs will take e endings and –er and –ir verbs will take a endings. Look at the examples below. Hablemos de esto más tarde. Comamos temprano. Pongamos los libros en el escritorio. Let’s talk about this later. Let’s eat early. Let’s put the books on the desk. If the verb is reflexive, put the preposition at the end in the positive command but drop the s at the end before adding the preposition. Negative nosotros commands take the preposition in front just as the formal commands do. Lavémonos las manos. To say let’s go use vámonos. Let’s wash our hands. No nos lavemos las manos. 204 doscientos cuatro Stem changing –ir verbs These verbs stem-change in the nosotros form also in the command, but in a different way. Los Mandatos informales Informal Commands The informal commands are tricky because the positive and negative commands are completely different. Be careful when and how you use these commands. These commands should never be used in a formal setting and in some countries they are completely unacceptable. In the right setting, however, you will hear these commands exclusively. In Mexico and the Caribbean islands in family gatherings, these are the commands used by all. Mandatos Positivos Informales Positive informal Commands To form the informal tú positive commands simply use the regularly tú form of the verb in the present indicative tense and drop the s. To give directions Giving good directions takes logical thinking and knowledge of the streets and roads in the area. You should learn the names or numbers of the streets in your city and the roads where you live. When giving directions, it is better to give the easiest directions with the fewest turns even though it may not be the shortest route. Study the following expressions and words that are needed to give directions. doble vaya a la derecha a la izquierda recto, derecho la escalera el elevador, el ascensor el pasillo el piso turn go to the right to the left straight ahead stairs, ladder elevator hallway floor, story la calle la carretera la cuadra la intersección el kilómetro la milla el semáforo la señal de alto la linea de ferrocarril street road, highway block intersection kilometer mile traffic light stop sign railroad line To ask for directions say ¿Cómo se llega? Derecho, straight ahead, is commonly used but is easily mixed up with derecha, right; therefore, recto is better to use. When giving street names or road numbers, say calle or carretera first and then the name or number. Do not change names to Spanish because this will only confuse the native who will see the name written in English on the sign. Do say the numbers in Spanish. la calle Main la carretera 117 Third Street and Eighth Street, etc., should be calle tres and calle ocho unless the sign has the word rather than the number. If the word is written, say the word in English. If the sign has 8th, say la calle ocho If the sign has eighth, say la calle eighth Use calle for lane, drive, terrace, etc., unless it is important that the proper word is used in English. For example, if there is both a 3rd Street and a 3rd Lane and they are close to each other, then say lane tres. You may need to use the ordinal numbers (first, second, etc.) in your directions. Review them on page 126. To give your address in Spanish, say the street first then the house number. Vivo en la calle Walker, número tres cientos cuarenta y cinco. Para viajar en España y la América latina You have learned a lot of Spanish now and should be ready to travel abroad. What can you expect? Where should you go? Do you know enough Spanish to go anywhere you want? Well, hopefully the answer to the last question is yes. If you have learned the material presented in this book and have practiced with it, you should be able to travel almost anywhere with a dictionary in hand. Spanish speakers will understand you even if your Spanish is not perfect, so don’t be shy. Remember, though, that in some areas of Latin America and Spain, you won’t encounter Spanish. The people in the area will speak a native language or maybe Catalán or Vascuence, but don’t let that stop you. A friendly smile, a little Spanish (which almost everyone knows in these countries), and sign language will work wonders when you want to communicate. There is so much to see right next door. Mexico is our neighbor and its culture is delightful, and full of surprises. This picture depicts the Danza de los Voladores de Papantl , a ritualistic dance in Veracruz, Mexico performed by the Totonac Indians. Five men, each representing the five elements of the indigenous world climb on top of a pole, one of them stays on the pole playing a flute and dancing while the remaining four descend the pole with a rope tied by one of their feet. The rope unwraps itself 13 times for each of the four flyers, symbolizing the 52 weeks of the year. To the left is the breathtaking scenery of the Andes from a train on the way to Machu Picchu. Ejercicio 4-1 Planear un viaje. Now it is your turn to search for information. Pick a country, city, island, park or anywhere that you would like to visit in any of the Spanish speaking countries we have studied. Plan a trip to that country that is affordable. Find out when the best air fares are, how much a good hotel will cost and what sites you want to see. Set up a budget and an itinerary for a one week trip. Be prepared to turn this into you teacher and to give a brief presentation on it in class. Of course write it in Spanish! It does not have to be complete sentences, just complete information. You can be creative and make this a travel brochure or an advertisement, maybe even a website. It’s up to you what you do as long as the information requested is included. 212 doscientos doce 2. Las Tribus indígenas del Caribe Indigenous Caribbean Tribes The Caribbean Islands and surrounding continental coastlines were inhabited by various indigenous tribes that either all but disappeared or were greatly influenced at the hands of their conquerors. In addition, the ensuing African slave trade to the Americas created a unique blending of the indigenous, European and African cultures. Many of the affects are still prevalent in some Caribbean cultures and religions today. With the discovery and conquer of the New World, a new and vital supply of materials were believed to be capable of stimulating European wealth. To facilitate this goal, a strong work force would be needed; however, the introduction of disease by the Europeans to the indigenous tribes had devastatingly deadly consequences. With the majority of the native labor force dying rapidly, the Europeans needed vast new disposable work force to supply their wealth. Reconstruction of a Taíno village in Cuba. Photo by Michal Zalewski. Taínos lived in villages (called yucayeques) of various sizes. Those in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico were the largest.. Often, the general population lived in a large circular buildings (bohio), constructed with wooden poles, woven straw, and palm leaves. Many areas along the Western coast of Africa had been colonized by the Portuguese who also operated slave trading businesses from their port cities. Among many African tribes, slavery was viewed not as a social stigma, but as a means to provide a living for yourself and others. When the Portuguese began sending slaves to the Americas, many Africans willingly volunteered until the news of death and disease made its way back to Africa. Slave trade was no longer a way for an African to enrich the lives of himself or his family; it was a death sentence that met with resistance.
