Most of the marriage requests we get at
St. Jerome are from Spanish-speaking
couples who have already been married in
a civil court (here or in their country of
origin) and are seeking a sacramental
church marriage.
Our challenge is to provide a welcoming atmosphere while at the same
time complying with all Church laws and
requirements governing the Sacrament of
Marriage.
Last October, while Fr. Daniel Zapata
was temporarily stationed with us, we
held an information meeting, in conjunction with the Archdiocese Family Life
Office, for all such couples who had applied for a marriage validation.
Sixty-three couples showed up and
still more responded by phone. We hardly

 3 ON SCOUT SUNDAY, A GREAT DAY FOR THE SCOUTS OF TROOP 152, four boys from the Troop received Religious Emblem
awards from Bishop Vincent Rizzotto at St. Edith Stein Church. Jimmy Grant and Pedro Mackey received the Ad Altarie Dei Award, and
Luis Mackey and Scott Underwood received the Pope Pius XII Religious Emblem. These boys had worked with Counselors John Kummer and Frank and Kathi Underwood for almost a given year to achieve these honors. Over 150 Scouts (the largest number ever) in the
Diocese received one of these awards.
Other awards of note given on this remarkable day (Sunday, Feb. 5): Troop 152 was awarded Pope Paul VI Unit, the National Golden
Bow and brought home the Bishop’s Trophy for the first time in 5 years! Mrs. Curnutt was awarded the District Award of Merit and the
District Spirit Award, and the Curnutt family was awarded the Mustang District Family of the Year. We also had 13 adults receive the
Golden Bow, which was presented at the Troop breakfast: Father Dan Scheel, Walter Guenther, Shannon Ripkowski, Jack Grant, John
Kummer, Frank Underwood, Melvin Hart, Jim Buechele, Kathi Underwood, Pauline Curnutt, and Jean Palmer.
This is an awesome honor and shows the wonderful message of not just Scouting, but Catholic Scouting, in action. We have much to
be proud of in Troop 152—awesome Scouters—awesome parents—awesome pastor! Ω

Holy Spirit animates teens spirituality
Four times a year, and on each Retreat Weekend (photo, page 5), the teens in our Life
Teen program experience a form of prayer and worship that seems to hold their attention
longer and more fully than anything else we do; it is called Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
I am continually amazed, inspired, overwhelmed, and in awe of the moments when
you can actually feel the Holy Spirit run through the chapel as the Life Teen band plays
the most amazing music you have ever heard.
The greatest thing about being a Catholic is to experience the true presence of Christ,
to know with absolute certainty that when the host is placed in the monstrance, there on
the altar, He is physically with us. It’s a miracle not meant to be understood, just believed.Then to watch the teens’ faces as they understand the full gravity of being in
Christ’s presence and just praying with all their heart.
It is a joy to see them opening up to the moment, either through singing, or in silent
stillness, or even with tears of happiness as they spend a moment with their Lord. It is a
form of praise and worship to be enjoyed by adults and teens alike.
We would be happy if you joined us on April 10th to see for yourself how amazing
God’s love is, and just how powerful Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament can be. Ω

ADORACION DEL SAGRADO SACRAMENTO. Cuatro veces al año y en cada retiro de fin de semana, la experiencia de los jóvenes
una manera de oración y adoración que parece atraer más su atención y más que nada lo que hacemos; es llamado Adoración del
Santísimo Sacramento.
Yo estoy completamente asombrado, inspirado, conmovido e impresionado de los momentos cuando tu puedes realmente sentir que
el Espíritu Santo corre a través de la capilla cuando la banda de jóvenes toca la más asombrosa música que tú jamás hayas escuchado. La cosa más grandiosa de ser católico es la experiencia de la verdadera presencia de Cristo, saber con absoluta certeza que
cuando la hostia es puesta en la custodia, ahí en el altar, El está físicamente con nosotros. Es un milagro que no significa que tiene
que ser entendido, solo creerlo. Luego ver la cara de los jóvenes cuando ellos entienden completamente la gravedad de estar en la
presencia de Cristo y solo orar con todo su corazón. Es un gozo verlos abriéndose delante de Dios en el momento, ya sea a través del
canto, en silencio o con lágrimas de alegría. Es una forma de oración y adoración para ser disfrutada tanto por adultos como por jóvenes.
Nos daría mucho gusto si se reúnen con nosotros el 10 de abril para entender que asombroso es el amor de Dios y que tan poderosa puede ser la Adoración del Santísimo Sacramento. Ω

El 5 de febrero de 2006 domingo de
exploradores, cuatro niños de la Tropa 152 recibieron del Obispo Vicente
Rizzotto, premios de Emblemas Religiosos en la iglesia St. Edith Stein

GUEST FROM GERMANY
Parish Council member hosts
foreign exchange student

St. Jerome families have hosted had many visitors from
around the world. One of our newest “long-term” visitors
is Brigitte Schibowski, an exchange student from Hilden,
Germany. She arrived in the U. S. on her 17th birthday-–a
new year, new experiences. Her host family is parish
council member, Sharon Cole, and her husband, Don.
At home, Brigitte’s father, Edmund, is the minister of
music at St. Konrad Catholic Church at home. Her mother,
Anna, is an accountant for a private company. Brigitte’s
22-year old brother, Lukas, is studying to be a dentist at
Erlangen University in Bavaria.
Brigitte is enrolled as a junior at Spring Woods High
School. She is maintaining a straight A average in all of
her subjects, including English and Spanish. Her favorite
subjects are Art and Medical-Health science. She had two
paintings in the VASE Art Contest, held in Katy in February. She also received a Blue Ribbon at the Spring Branch
ISD Rodeo Art 2006 Show for her “Boots” still life painting.
When asked about memorable experiences since she has
been here, the first one that came to mind was the hurricane evacuation. Brigitte has had several pleasant new
experiences, including Astroworld, Rockets, Texans and
Astros games and Drivers Ed (they drive on the same side
of the road in Germany). She has enjoyed Halloween and
Thanksgiving (which are not celebrated in Germany) and
Christmas. For Christmas eve dinner, Brigitte made several native dishes, which were enjoyed by all. She recently
enjoyed a seven-day cruise with her host family.
Brigitte will be returning to Germany at the end of the
school year, where she will attend two more years of her
five-year high school. Her year here does not count academically in Germany.
Brigitte, the St. Jerome Community welcomes you and
wishes you a memorable and blessed visit! Ω

explained the process and answered questions, stressing
that each couple’s case was confidential and each would
have to be handled separately by appointment.
In follow-up meetings later with each couple, we encountered the full range of situations—from couples “living together” with no previous marriages, to those who had
been divorced and were now seeking a Church wedding.
We handled as many of the simpler cases as we could
here in the parish, such as those with no previous marriages. Others, however, particularly those with prior
Church marriages requiring formal annulments, were referred to the Archdiocesan Marriage Tribunal.
A six-hour marriage validation workshop/practice was
held in early December for those who wished to be married
by the Church in a group setting before Christmas. Fortyseven couples chose this option and received the Sacrament
of Matrimony on December 17. Marriages for those requiring formal annulments or perhaps more lengthy preparation
will be scheduled later on an individual basis.
Why are Marriage Validations Necessary?
One unique gift of our Catholic faith is our belief in the
Body and Blood of Christ in the Eucharist, which is reserved for those living a moral Catholic life, including single
Catholics and those validly married in the Church. In a
“marriage validation,” (or “convalidation”) a couple which
had previously been married legally by the civil authorities—the practice in many Latin American countries—is
now being married sacramentally in the Church and thus is
able to receive the Blessed Sacrament in the Holy Eucharist.
As Catholics we believe that as children of God, those
in irregular marriages, for whom Jesus also died, are equally deserving of Christ’s mercy and eternal salvation. For
that reason we have taken this initiative to make the Sacrament of Matrimony widely available to the Hispanics in
our area, so that they may now come to the Eucharist at
Mass.
We extend a hand of welcome to all those couples who
came forward to have their marriages validated and who
can now join us in receiving Christ in the Holy Eucharist.

uno debe ser tratado

que viven juntos y
no se han casado
por la ley civil,

por la ley civil
pero no por la
iglesia
y

alguien mas. Cada uno de los casos
es diferente y por lo tanto requiere
de una cita en particular para hacer

tiempo adecuado.
Para aquellos que tienen un matrimonio anterior por al iglesia y se
quieren casar con alguien mas, hay
que iniciar un proceso de anulación
matrimonial en el tribunal de la Arquidiocesis. El trámite se inicia en
la parroquia, pero se hace completamente en el tribunal.
Debe ser iniciado por un diacono o un sacerdote.
Los casos más sencillos son
aquellos en donde ya están casados
por lo civil, no tienen matrimonios
anteriores y quieren recibir el sacramento del matrimonio por la Iglesia.
La preparación de Convalidación fue dada el 3 de Diciembre, y
la ceremonia de boda en grupo fue
el 17 de Diciembre a los que quisieron hacerlo de esa manera, o de manera individual para otros en otras
fechas.
¿Cual es el objetivo
de esta iniciativa
de Convalidación
Matrimonial?
Que todos los que deseen y hagan los trámites
necesarios puedan recibir
la gracia del Sacramento
del Matrimonio, y recibir la oportunidad
durante la celebración Eucarística de
poder comulgar.
Es una invitación
a que Dios mismo habite en
su matrimonio.
Una
clave importante
en esto es
dar
la
bienvenida en nuestra
iglesia Católica, que muchas veces
no los hacemos y se alejan a veces
para siempre.
Ellos también son hijos de Dios
y también por ellos Jesucristo ha
venido a este mundo y quiere se
salven junto con todos nosotros para
reunirnos algún día en el cielo.

San Jerónimo ha tenido muchos visitantes de alrededor del mundo. Uno de nuestros visitantes de “tiempo-extendido” es
Brigitte Schibowski. Brigitte es un estudiante de intercambio de Hilden, Alemania. Ella llegó a los Estados Unidos en
su cumpleaños 17 – un nuevo año, nuevas experiencias. La familia que la hospeda son miembros del consejo parroquial, Sharon Cole y su esposo Don.
En casa, el padre de Brigitte, Edmund,
es el ministro de música en la Iglesia Católica St. Konrad. Su mamá, Anna, es

hermano mayor de Brigitte de 22 años,

fue la evacuación por el huracán. Brigitte
ha tenido varias nuevas experiencias placenteras – Astroworld, juegos de los Rockets, Texans y Astros y choferes que manejan del mismo lado que en las carreteras de Alemania. Ella disfrutó Halloween
y Acción de Gracias (las cuales no se
festejan en Alemania) y Navidad. Para la
cena de navidad, Brigitte hizo varios platillos nativos, los cuales fueron disfrutados por todos. Recientemente disfrutó de
un crucero de 7 días con la familia que la
hospeda.
Brigitte regresará a Alemania al final
del año escolar, donde asistirá 2 años más
de sus 5 años de preparatoria. Su año
aquí no cuenta académicamente en Alemania. ¡Brigitte, a la comunidad de San
