“THE AIRPORT AUTHORITY OF GUAYAQUIL HAS WALKED ALONG WITH THE TERMINAL How does experience in textile industry and communications businesses from the early years, allowed Corporación América to enter the airport market? Eduardo Eurnekian (head of Corporacion America) always distinguished due to his business experience but particularly, for the ability to add value to a business. Our items have been varied but they all had a common denominator: his work philosophy and his vision of the future and the challenge found in every project that he leads. As concessionaire of airports and air cargo terminals in 53 places of Latin America and Europe, where may be grounded the sustained growth of business of Corporación América? We always aimed for high training, a lot of innovation and creation for synergies in the group, which reflects efficiency and quality. There is a lot of communication between our airports, comparing better practices, experiences and exchanging ideas. EZEQUIEL BARRENECHEA VISIÓN DE ALTO VUELO Which has been the strategy to replicate your business model in so many countries, many of them with different cultures, features and problems? Main strategy was based always in human resources that lead each project and in their teams. Then, you may understand each country, their culture and society and have so a good relationship with governments is achieved, which is mandatory if you manage and develop a public service. GENERAL DIRECTOR OF CORPORACIÓN AMÉRICA, CONCESSIONAIRE OF GUAYAQUIL'S TERMINAL, SHARES WITH US ABOUT THE CHALLENGE OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF JOSÉ JOAQUÍN DE OLMEDO AIRPORT AND THE DEFY TO KEEP IT AMONG THE BEST ONES WORLDWIDE. How has been the experience of Corporación América with Tagsa? It has been a very good experience, even though at the beginning we had to double our efforts explaining the differences between Corporacion America and other companies that generated negative concessions in Ecuador. We also had a very good experience with Airport Authority DURING THE LAST 10 YEARS IN THE TRAIL OF ITS GROWTH." WHO IS EZEQUIEL BARRENECHEA? This Argentinian, who has worked in airport businesses for more than 15 years, is one of those tourists that upon arrival at Guayaquil sees the air terminal from a different perspective. Not only he has been in charge of building the airports in Tena and in Galápagos (first ecological airport worldwide) but he has also been the leader of the development of the air terminal of this main port. He is 44 years old and Buenos Aires is his hometown. He was General Manager of TAGSA (Terminal Aeroportuaria de Guayaquil) in 2003 and since 2005 holds the position of Executive Vice President. He is also General Director of Grupo América, an Argentinean holding that besides being concessionaire of the airport of Guayaquil, has investments in energy, construction, nanotechnology, viticulture and a bank. 9 LA ENTREVISTA “BUSCAREMOS PERFECCIONAR LAS OPERACIONES QUE TENEMOS Y ESTAREMOS OPERATIONS WE HAVE AND WE WILL BE ATENTOS A POSIBLES CONCESIONES O EXPECTING FOR ANY POSSIBLE CONCESSION COMPRAS INTERESANTES PARA SEGUIR OR INTERESTING ACQUISITION FOR SUMANDO AL GRUPO”. THE GROUP TO CONTINUE GROWING.” of Guayaquil, an entity that without losing control of the concession agreement, has walked along with the terminal during the last 10 years in the trail of its growth. Which ones are the main features that stand out about this airport? Its location inside the city generates an important dynamism for the development of businesses and tourism; its design makes it user friendly, modern and attractive with a lot of green areas and high tech features. Its strategic location in the continent turns it into a candidate to open a hub in the future, when Latin America becomes area of greatest growth worlwide. 10 “WE WILL SEEK FOR PERFECTION IN THE What was the main challenge you had to face in the development of the airport of Guayaquil? There were many. Clearly, the economic and political situation of Ecuador when we assumed the concession was not the most convenient one. We had a President that left his position in the middle of a social crisis, a transition government that had to contain the serious crisis then existing until elections and then, an elected government that had to carry through extreme measures to get out of the crisis. Within such scenario we developed the Master Plan of the Airport, we designed and built a new terminal and we placed the airport of Guayaquil among with the best airports of Latin America and the world. Which challenges imply for Corporación América the achievements received by this airport? We have daily challenges, particularly about maintaining such position year after year, we would always want to be among the three first airports in all categories and, it also implies efforts in other of our airports to achieve a healthy competition, looking for awards and recognitions that reflect the quality of services and operations of each one. How have you succeeded in a business that involves so many millions of passengers around the globe and, in particular, in Guayaquil? The number of airports helps us to compare best practices, reflect those in others and generate in our professionals varied experiences to improve our services. Particularly in Guayaquil, for the quality of our human resources, high standards in customer service are highlighted as well as the permanent search to improve the experience of passing by an airport. Which is the difference between operating the Galápagos’ airport and the airport of the biggest city of the country? In a lot, in almost everything. Galápagos has the size of only the 10% of the airport of Guayaquil and a completely different dynamic, a different profile of its passengers, even considering that almost all Galápagos passengers pass through the airport of Guayaquil. Galápagos had a very important challenge, the design and construction of the first green airport of the world, logistics for such construction was a greater challenge... Today we are very proud that Corporación América built the first airport in the world receiving Leed Gold certification of USGBC. Do you have plans to build and operate other terminals in Ecuador? We are always with our eyes open to continue investing in Ecuador, we believe in this country and its people and that makes us want to walk with them into the future. L ights are not the same at 10 am than at 6 pm. Sunlight is not reflected the same way over objects, over streets, over sunroofs. Energy is not the same either: morning agitations evoke occupation, things to do; placid evenings evoke time to relax but also adventure and discovery. Guayaquil presents a less known face when the night comes, a side that is only appreciated by those that want a little bit more than only the daylight look of this town. It is the port face painted with mauve, orange and golden colors when the sun sets, work is over and the watch invites an exploration. “From 17h00 and on, a city tour around this “Pacific Pearl” (a nickname given by Ecuadorians to this town) provides a perfect scenario; daylight goes down and the city turns on with its artificial illumination and the sunset. This true colors range will be permanently saved in your mind and in any camera lens. Landscape changes significantly between night and day and so do activities” says Yanira Segovia, head of Tourism Services Department of Guayaquil Vision, the two-story buses that offer panoramic tours around Guayaquil. For Graciela Holgado, manager of M/V Morgan (a vessel that offers water tour on the Guayas river), the star of the night is Simon Bolivar Riverwalk. “It is completely lit, just like our vessel and together with our cruising music, sailing on the Guayas River is an unforgettable experience”, she affirms. On the other hand, Martin Gerardo Artunduaga, owner of the Guayaquil branch of “La Chiva de mi Pueblo” (company that organizes tours aboard traditional party buses), Las Penas neighborhood and the Salado estuary waterfront are also two special spots to visit at night, which is the perfect time for tourism. “Guayaquil is a city privileged by its geographical position and I believe that is shows off at night, due to its illumination and colors”, he asserts. THE “MISSION ACCOMPLISHED” FEELING IS TRANSMITTED TO HIM BY A SMILE OR A SIMPLE GRATITUDE GESTURE FROM PASSENGERS, TO WHOM HE IS COMPLETELY DEVOTED TO PROVIDE AN UNFORGETTABLE FLYING EXPERIENCE AND TO ALLOW THEM TO ENJOY THEIR FLIGHT DURING THE ENTIRE PROCESS. “PASSENGERS FLY FOR DIFFERENT REASONS AND IT IS INTERESTING TO KNOW THAT WE ARE HELPING EACH ONE OF THEM TO GET TO THEIR DESTINATION OR TO MAKE A DREAM COME TRUE.” H e will never forget the time when an Avianca’s frequent flyer was having his birthday and the airline staff decided to congratulate him with a birthday cake at the preboarding hall, singing “Happy Birthday to you” together with all other passengers. This is only one of the many stories he lives every day at work, where his only mission is to be careful with every detail, providing a first class service for clients to be satisfied and for the airline to become their first choice. Jesús Arbey Martínez Abaunza, a 35 years old Colombian, began working for Avianca back in 2006 and two years later he was transferred to the airline operations in Ecuador, as Passenger Services Supervisor. “What I like the best of working in this industry is that we live different situations every day and all of them are exciting, particularly seen from our call to serve point of view. Our goal is to provide our clients an unforgettable flying experience and to allow them to enjoy their flight during the entire process”, he affirms. He has a job with no time schedule, or holidays, as a 24/7 availability for all passengers is mandatory. “When you begin to work in airlines, particularly in operations areas, you pass through an adaptation process in all different time schedules, but when you love what you do, you get used to it and learn to handle better those time to rest and time to work”, he adds. “There are holidays when we must work with a prior planning, but the airline is always looking for a balance between your labor and personal areas”. He defines himself as a person who is passionate for what he is doing with qualities such as perseverance, honesty, charisma, patience and ability for teamwork. For his sociable features, he is delighted with the effervescence environment of José Joaquín de Olmedo terminal, a place to share with thousands of travelers every day. “The terminal stands out for its facilities and helpful staff”, he comments. “Each day a different experience makes our job interesting. Passengers fly for different reasons – tourism, business, family visits, etc. - and it is interesting to know that we are helping each one of them to get to their destination or to make a dream come true”. Married, father of a three years old girl, Arbey enjoys spending time with his family and, of course, traveling. “A desire of most people is to visit many countries, explore different cultures and enjoy unique experiences. By being part of this business, such desire is intensified. I have had the opportunity to visit several cities, but I hope to arrive in the future to Malaysia, Paris, London, China, Australia, among others”, he concludes. “Sometimes it is hard to walk in the shoes of a single woman, that is why once in a while we need very special shoes for such walk to become more fun.” This is one of Carrie Bradshaw’s famous phrases, a character envied by millions of women around the world, not only for her NewYorker lifestyle but for the dozens of pairs of designer shoes that she wore and kept in her closet. Carrie is the main character of Sex and the City, the TV series that American actress Sarah Jessica Parker starred in from 1998 to 2004, and which was the inspiration for two movies afterwards. Parker not only owes to this role her consolidation as an actress but also her fashion icon status. No matter what she wears, it is always in the news. She used that to her advantage to launch a shoe design business that is celebrating its first anniversary. After presenting a show at New York Fashion Week in February 2014, her SJP collection arrived at Nordstrom’s stores as an exclusive line. As expected, the first models –named after women– are pretty much like those shoes worn by her mythical character: Diana is a classic stiletto with an ankle bracelet, Mary Jane-like, which is very similar to Carrie’s favorite, Manolo Blahnik’s Campari. Due to the success of her first collection, the actress presented another one last fall, adding suede boots, high boots and some purses and bags. To promote her new creation, she toured several cities nationwide and even traveled to Dubai, where not only did she sell shoes, but also signed many of them in a luxury mall. Everything points to the fact that the weakness that once almost brought Carrie to bankruptcy will be Sarah Jessica Parker’s gold mine. Lancôme Rose comtesse (246N), 6 ml $22 39 H ands say a lot about a person. And we are not talking about the future, since many believe palm reading can predict what is to come. Good nail care reveal how meticulous we are, while the color of our nail polish is an expression of our personality. However, what’s trendy also plays a big part in the game. The look in 2015 • This year nails styles are round or almond-shape. Square shaped nails are taking a break during these months. • Short and medium sized nails are still present. • Neon colors are out. A more natural look is taking over manicures. Beige, nude and pale rose colors are the trend. • Red is a classic that is here to stay. From burgundy to carnation, there is a tone for every taste. Lancôme Rose bonheur (345b), 6 ml $22 • Metallic tones are also very in this year, not only in golden and silver tones, but in other ones such as blue or green. Anti-age nail care • To prevent hands from showing age, we must be constant with hydration processes, not only after we wash them, but as a habit several times a day. Carrying a small tube of moisturizing cream on our purses is of great help. • Hands skin requires the same protection as the rest of our body. That is why sun protection is also a must in this area. • Scissors and nail clippers affect nails by turning them more fragile. It is better to use a nail file to shorten and shape them. • By trimming down cuticles, a protection layer of the nails is removed. It’s better to soften them by moisturizing with water and then polish all excesses with an orange stick. • Base coat has a reason for being. Nails are an absorbing porous tissue that requires such protection. • Over color nail polish, a final shine coat is necessary to extend the manicure. B SEYMOUR TERMINAL OF BALTRA IS THE FIRST TO RECEIVE THE PRESTIGIOUS LEED GOLD CERTIFICATION FOR BEING A SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION. altra es una pequeña isla no habitada de la región insular. B altra is a small island, part of the Galápagos Islands, with no population. Its only movement comes from military activities and Seymour Airport of Baltra that opened its doors to the public on December 2012. Located at a short distance from Santa Cruz, the most populated town of the archipelago, Baltra hosts this terminal which is managed and operated by Ecogal S.A., an affiliate of Corporación América, that manages 53 air terminals in Latin America and the Caribbean (among which is the Airport of Guayaquil, José Joaquín de Olmedo). In the specific case of Seymour airport in Baltra, the government granted a 15-year concession in year 2011. Also known as Galápagos Green Airport, the name answers to the fact that the terminal was designed and built considering the least environmental impact possible. Even its operations are carried under concepts that respect the surroundings. All these is developed in compliance with USGBC parameters (U.S. Green Building Council), a reference for the best green constructions worldwide, as well as following the plan approved by the Ministry of Environment Protection and Galápagos National Park. Worldwide milestone By the end of 2014, Seymour terminal received the highest certification currently existing to acknowledge green constructions. USGBC granted it the Leed Gold certification, thus becoming the first one worldwide in achieving it being a complete construction (a sector of San Francisco’s airport received it on year 2011, for an extension of the terminal). This credential is granted for incorporating green design and construction strategies, such as energy usage reduction, natural illumination and ventilation in all spaces, water usage reduction, treatment and reuse of this resource, reuse of more than 80% of materials of the former airport, among others, that turned out to be transcendental for having being carried out in a sensible ecosystem such as Galápagos. Currently, Corporación América is extending this objective and is working to obtain the Carbon Print Reduction certification by Airport Carbon Accreditation and, during 2015, it will aim to be certified in Green Operation & Maintenance, which will become an unique process in airport history worldwide and an example to be followed by the entire sector.
