Atmospheric portrait
I wanted to build a cinematic concept painting
and explore mood through lighting and color. The
cinematic coloring was combined with my desire
to create a portrait on a tablet. I used Adobe®
Photoshop® Touch to construct this intense,
atmospheric image—all without the use of
photographic images.

Importing the sketch
•I started by importing a sketch into
Adobe Photoshop Touch as a
background layer from my Adobe
Creative Cloud™ collection.
•Then, I used the Lasso Selection tool to
create a background silhouette.

Creating detail and
background
•Using a combination of the Paint Brush
tool and the Blur tool, I painted a smooth
black and white layer of skin.
•After a few hours of adding detail to the
face using a smaller brush and opacity
to layer the brush strokes and build up
the painting, I created a new layer
below the head and painted a simple,
loose background with some shapes.

Effects and Blend Modes
•Here, I used the Gaussian Blur filter to
blur the background and give the
painting more depth of field.
•I then used two color fill layers with
blend modes to color the painting red
and yellow. Using a Multiply and Lighten
Blend Mode, I gave the image a warmer
color scheme for a more cinematic feel.
•To finish the painting, I used a number
of effects to add to the cinematic quality
including Directional Blur on a layer of
painted snowflakes for a sense of
movement and lighting to create a
vignette around the edge of the painting.

Finishing touches
•With the painting finished, I still have
room to continue experimenting with
extra effects or even add text.
