Letter From The Pastor
Dear Parishioners:
We have heard the opening lines of today’s first reading, “Vanity of vanities, says
Qoheleth, vanity of vanities! All is vanity!” many times. One definition of vanity is —
excessive pride in one's appearance, qualities, abilities, achievements, etc.; — character or
quality of being vain; — conceit: — Failure to be elected was a great blow to his vanity —
an instance or display of this quality or feeling: — something about which one is vain or
excessively proud: — his good looks are his greatest vanity — lack of real value;
hollowness; worthlessness: — the vanity of a selfish life: — something worthless, trivial, or
pointless. Not too much positive language in that definition.
USCCB’s (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) web site has a good introduction to the Book of
Ecclesiastes. In part we read:
The Hebrew name of this book and of its author, Qoheleth, is actually a title, and it perhaps means
“assembler” (of students, listeners) or “collector” (of wisdom sayings). The book’s more common name,
Ecclesiastes, is an approximate translation into Greek of this Hebrew word. The book comprises an
extended reflective essay employing autobiographical narrative, proverbs, parables, and allegories. An
almost unrelenting skepticism characterizes the tone or outlook.
The refrain which begins and ends the book, “Vanity of vanities” (1:1; 12:8), recurs at key points
throughout. The Hebrew word, hebel (“vanity”), has the sense of “emptiness, futility, absurdity”: “I have
seen all things that are done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and a chase after wind” (1:14;
2:11, 17, 26; etc.). Everything in human life is subject to change, to qualification, to loss: “What profit
have we from all the toil which we toil at under the sun?” (1:3). The answer is in the negative: No
absolute profit or gain is possible. Even if some temporary profit or gain is achieved, it will ultimately be
cancelled out by death, the great leveller (2:14–15; 3:19–20). Wisdom has some advantage over
foolishness, but even wisdom’s advantage is only a temporary and qualified one.
The book’s honest and blunt appraisal of the human condition provides a healthy corrective to the
occasionally excessive self-assurance of other wisdom writers. Its radical skepticism is somewhat
tempered by the resigned conclusions to rejoice in whatever gifts God may give.
… While Qohelet's observations are somewhat despairing in tone, we are not meant to reject
working or gaining wisdom (3:22; 10:10). Rather, through Ecclesiastes we realize the shortness of
human life, the smallness of our work, the insignificance of our lives without God. Qohelet helps us
understand that there are many pursuits in human life that are not worth investing our time and energy.
Rather, we should seek God and keep his commandments. For money, pleasure and knowledge are
merely necessary things along the path of life, but God is the goal of the journey.
… Ecclesiastes is hard to stomach because it confronts us so sharply with the contradictions of life.
Yet the hard truths which Ecclesiastes teaches lift our vision higher. While our daily work is important in
a limited sense, Ecclesiastes focuses us on the ultimately important purposes of life: to love God and
keep his commandments (12:13).
I encourage you to read this book of the Bible. If you read it from the Bishops’ web site you will have the
advantage of seeing the notes for the text. These notes are quite helpful for background information and proper
paths to deeper understanding. The Bible treats us like adults and calls us to find the courage to listen and
respond to God’s truth from the deepest recesses of our hearts. While the words seem hard, they are words of
mercy. Sometimes words of mercy are fierce because God knows what is at stake — our eternal destiny.

Elementary Faith Formation
The Lord’s Day Program is a faith formation program for
children 2 years old through 5 years old. You may choose
the 9:00 AM or the 11:00 AM class, and they meet in the
Primary School Building.
The CCE Program provides faith formation for children in
grades 1 through 8. We also have a class for children
with special needs. CCE meets 10:30AM - 12:00Noon in
the Primary, Intermediate and Middle School Buildings
and the Msgr. Jamail Family Center.
FIRST HOLY COMMUNION PREPARATION: In order to be
ready to start preparation for First Holy Communion, students must complete one full year of Catholic Education,
beginning no sooner than First Grade. This requirement
may be satisfied by attendance at CCE, Catholic School, or
Home School (provided the curriculum consists of daily
Catholic Education).
DOES YOUR CHILD NEED TO BE BAPTIZED? If your child is
over 7 years or older and needs to be baptized, we have
an RCIA program adapted for children. In addition to the
Sunday CCE classes from 10:30am to 12:00noon, we will
meet once a month on a Monday night from 5:30pm to

Life Teen – High School Youth Ministry
Lifeteen Inspiration: We will be going to The Lifeteen Inspiration Conference at the Six Flags in San Antonio, TX this Saturday August 6th! We will spend the day riding roller coasters,
making friends, and spending time in worship growing closer
to God and each other. We will be leaving at 6:00 AM and
returning at 1:00 AM the next day. The cost is $75 per person.

Bible Study: There will be an open youth room from 2:30-5:00
PM this Tuesday for anyone in grades 7-12, followed by our

kick off Sunday, August 7, after the 5:00pm Lifeteen Mass. All
high schoolers are welcome to join us for food, fun, fellowship, and prayer!

(SVDPYA), we strive to live out our Catholic faith in
both word and deed. We achieve this goal through our
service, spiritual formation, and social events in support
of one another, our community, and the Church as a

to investigate the murder to exonerate his former pupil,
who he knows is innocent. As he struggles to save
George, Omar Yussef is drawn into a complex plot where

Adult Life Ministries
Bus Trip for August 10 The next senior bus trip will be
to the National Weather Service in Dickinson for a free
explanation of how the forecasters know when it will rain
or when a hurricane is developing and where it will hit.
Then we shall go on to San Leon to have lunch at the Top
Water Grill and tour the Railean Distillery. In the event
the weather center will not be able to take us because of a
dynamic weather condition, we shall go, instead, to the
Air Terminal Museum at Hobby Airport. Because a prepayment is not required, there will be no money needed to
sign up. For this reason you may sign up at the reception
desk in the main lobby of the MJFC. Boarding for this trip
will be at 8:30am.

LOVE, CALLING YOU?
On May 5, 2015, the first national Thank-A-Nun Day
was celebrated. With apologies for the delay, we have
reproduced below portions of a column honoring that day
by Fr. Thomas Rosica, CSB.
“We still have profound lessons to learn from the
women who ran to the tomb that first Easter morning.
They represented countless, nameless, yet devoted women who were part of the crowds that Jesus addressed and
in the homes he frequented. They were the courageous
ones who reached out fearlessly to touch the fringe of his
cloak. They shouted after him; they entered his hosts’
houses uninvited, they poured most expensive, perfumed
nard over his feet to the consternation of the critics….
I regret that several generations of young people will
never have the grace of getting to know women religious
as I knew them: as teachers, pastoral workers, colleagues
and friends.
Though their “charisms” will live on through lay-led
institutions in many instances, nothing can ever replace
their presence in the life of the Church and in our own
personal stories. Their lives were alabaster jars of nard
poured out in active service, in decisive, courageous, prophetic works, and in watchful presence at the end. When
I think of that first Easter, in an eerie, garden-like setting
outside the walls of Jerusalem, I cannot help but remember the faithful women in my life who have carried the
message of the Resurrection to the ends of the earth.”

PALABRAS FÁCILES; PALABRAS ÁSPERAS
“Ya que han resucitado con Cristo, busquen las cosas de arriba”, es lo que hoy escuchamos
(Colosenses 3:1). Y también: “Piensen en las cosas de arriba” (Colosenses 3:2). Eso es fácil de entender. Es un
buen consejo y puro sentido común. Pero, san Pablo nos dice que, la capacidad de buscar y pensar en las cosas
de arriba tiene su precio. Para poder morir de veras, de modo que nuestra vida de gloria esté con Cristo en el
cielo, tenemos que dar muerte –igual que dieron muerte a Cristo en la cruz– a todas esas cosas de nuestra vida
de “aquí abajo” que nos impiden vivir por Cristo y con Cristo, como nuestro todo en todo. La verdad es que no
podemos buscar las cosas de arriba, pensar en ellas, pero a la vez mantener las peores de nuestras pasiones
humanas, perpetuar nuestra falsedad y enfatizar nuestras diferencias. Si vivimos así, no sólo continuamos
mintiéndonos unos a otros, sino que nos mentimos a nosotros mismos e imaginamos que a Dios también lo
podremos engañar. Solamente cuando abandonemos esta manera
de ser es que llegaremos a poder mostrar de veras nuestra imagen
bautismal: la imagen de Cristo que es la imagen del Dios
invisible. Sólo entonces podremos deshacernos de nuestra
antigua personalidad y convertirnos en una nueva creación. Sólo
entonces seremos imagen de nuestro Creador, una imagen
completamente restaurada por Cristo.

Estos temas reverberan a través de todas las lecturas de hoy.
Qohélet (el “Predicador”) nos enseña que al fin y a las postres
todo lo que hay en nuestra vida terrena no resulta ser más que

vanidad cuando nos vemos llamados a salir de esta vida. Jesús
nos muestra quiénes somos con el ejemplo del hombre que gasta toda su energía en acaparar la cosecha, para
asegurarse un futuro de comodidad. Qohélet, Pablo y Jesús están completamente de acuerdo en este asunto.
Hemos sido creados a imagen y semejanza de nuestro Creador, creemos que lo que Dios ha creado es bueno y
lleno de gracia, pero necesitamos mantener esto en perspectiva, ya que la creación y todas las criaturas –
inclusive las criaturas humanas– tendrán como destino la nada, a menos que ese destino se una al de Cristo.
Cristo nos predica que podemos y hasta debemos ser ricos, muy ricos –pero sólo con la única clase de riqueza
que vale delante de Dios.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Del 1o al 5 de agosto los capitalinos en El Salvador celebran la fiesta del Salvador del Mundo, cuando recuerdan la Transfiguración de
Jesús en el Monte Tabor. Como muchas fiestas patronales
en Latinoamérica esta semana está llena de carnavales y
desfiles. La celebración principal es una procesión religiosa con la imagen de Jesús, el Divino Salvador del mundo.
La estatua de Jesús con sus brazos extendidos en bendición es llevada desde la Basílica del Sagrado Corazón hasta la Catedral Metropolitana. Vestida de un rojo que recuerda su pasión, la imagen es cargada sobre los hombros
de una veintena de fieles. Al llegar a la catedral la imagen
patronal es puesta en una torre de más de 20 metros de
alto. Eventualmente la estatua revestida de blanco aparece
de una esfera encima de la torre en medio de gritos, aplausos y cantos. Esta esfera azul representa el mundo entero,
mundo salvado por Cristo. La transfiguración de esta imagen en San Salvador recuerda la pasión y resurrección de
Jesús, eventos claves que han hecho de él, el Salvador del
