Data analysis expertise for many biologists lags behind the capacity for
producing high-throughput data. One view within the bioinformatics
community is that biological scientists need to develop algorithmic
skills in order to meet the demands of the new technologies. I will
offer the contrasting view that acquiring new experimental design and
statistical analysis skills adapted for high-throughput contexts is a
higher priority. As a case in point, I will present results from a
recent experiment to illustrate the relevance of the "regression toward
the mean" statistical artifact in the context of validating microarray
results with lower throughput technologies such as RT-PCR.
