Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time—September 21, 2014
Welcome! If you are a visitor to the Cathedral, we want you to know how welcome you are whether you have come from another part
of the country, from across the world, or from another parish here in the Archdiocese. Thanks, in part, to the generosity of visitors like
you, we are able to celebrate the liturgy in a fitting and beautiful way, and also we are able to give spiritual and emotional support
through a variety of services to the community. Your gift is greatly appreciated; our parish family is small and we rely on the generosity
of you, our visitors, to help sustain this magnificent Cathedral church for future generations.

Catechetical Sunday, September 21, 2014
“Teaching About God's Gift of Forgiveness"
Today, the Church celebrates Catechetical Sunday
(September 21, 2014), and has chosen the theme "Teaching
About God's Gift of Forgiveness." Those whom the
community has designated to serve as catechists will be
called forth to be commissioned for their ministry at the
1:00 p.m. Spanish Mass. Catechetical Sunday is a
wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each
person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith
and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is
an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this
mission as a community of faith.

Special Second Collection this weekend,
September 20th and 21st
Priests’ Retirement Fund
The Archdiocese is blessed to have hundreds of priests
who dedicated, in some cases, as many as 50 years or
more of their lives to ministering to us. Even in
retirement, many continue to give of themselves in
countless ways of service for which we are grateful.
This weekend, September 20 and 21, our parish will
participate in the special collection for the Priests’
Retirement Fund. Please prayerfully reflect on how you
can best contribute to the Priests Retirement Fund.
Transportation Survey for the
Cathedral Hill Faith Community
St. Mary’s Cathedral is working with other Cathedral Hill
churches and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation
Agency to improve transportation in the Cathedral Hill area.
A very brief questionnaire is inserted in today’s bulletin
to determine your current travel needs. The survey form
is in English and Spanish.
Please note. Only one survey needs to be filled out per
group. For example, if you came together with your
family or friends in one car, just fill out one survey form
for your group, but if you arrived in two separate cars,
then fill out two questionnaires: one for each travel group.

More than 35 parishioners have already
responded, sharing their memories,
insights and observations as to what
makes the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the
Assumption such a beloved parish and
church home. Please take a moment to
share your responses with us. All
responses will be placed in handsome
binders for Monsignor John Talesfore to
take with him to his new parish assignment. Response
forms are available on the shelves by the Cathedral doors.
Please return in next week’s offering baskets or to the
Cathedral’s administrative office. Thank you!
Justicia, mons. John, Mons. Padazinski, y los miembros del
personal Pastoral .”-Al y Aida
Here is another examples of what a parishioner has said:
"The Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption is a special
parish to us. The Church’s unique architectural design looks
beautiful and very impressive. We have been parishioners for
many years and have found much solace and peace in our lives
by attending Mass every day. The friends that we see each
morning at Mass established a strong and cheerful comraderie
among us, more importantly our faith in the church is
strengthened by the clergy-Bishop Justice, Msgr. John,
Msgr. Padazinski, and members of the Pastoral staff."

change of seasons, moving into fall, and perhaps a more
pensive state of mind. It will open with J.S. Bach's jubilant

ending with the haunting last movement of Alfred

Weekly Collection
We will be sharing information with you in the weekly bulletin about how actual collections and other donations
compare with our financial goals.
Building our yearly budget is straightforward. After estimating expenses, we estimate annual collections and other
donations based on what we received in recent years. The result is a considerable gap between expenses and anticipated
donations. The Cathedral works hard to close this gap with revenue generated by our Events Center and gift shop,
interest income, Archdiocesan subsidy, savings and endowment, plus other donations and special gifts in addition to the
regular weekly offering. While sometimes necessary to cover operating costs, it is not fiscally prudent to withdraw funds
from our savings or endowment. This is why we are so grateful for annual collections and other donations.
For the Fiscal Year 2015, July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015, our annual goal is $363,000 or an average of $7,260 per week
(excluding Christmas and Easter weeks). We hope this new reporting method provides you with information that helps
you thoughtfully consider you giving to the Cathedral.
We thank you for your generous support! If you have any questions or comments for us, please contact the Cathedral’s
Development Department at 415-567-2020, ext. 229.
