Today the Christian world celebrates the glorious feast of Easter - the greatest feast of the Universal Church as we proclaim with wonder and gratitude that Christ has risen from the dead. Though the disciples, including Peter and John, did not witness the actual event, they all nonetheless believed and boldly proclaimed that He has risen. Indeed Jesus has risen! Easter is the Feast of the Resurrection. And it is too much for us to digest in one day reflecting upon the unfathomable love of God for all His children as revealed in the resurrection of His Son for Easter is an event without precedence, beyond everything, and almost impossible to tell. That is why we have Easter Octave to give us time to reflect on our personal experiences of the Risen Christ. Only after the Risen Lord appeared to them on many occasions that the disciples finally grasped the profound significance of Easter. Although for unbealivers Easter may just mean an ordinary event that comes and goes, but for us Christians, Easter is the very foundation of our Faith: Christ conquered sin and death thus restoring man’s original relationship with his Creator. May our personal encounter with the life-giving touch and life-changing love of the Risen Christ powerfully empowers us to share our faith-filled experiences with others and fill our hearts with joy not only during this Easter week but every day of our lives. It is my ardent prayer that may the event of Easter be the day-to-day life of every believer. Amen. Alleluia! Happy Easter and God Bless You All! Fr. Jimmy B. Hababg YOUR CATHOLIC COMMUNITY IN DOWNTOWN BOCA RATON Diocese of Palm Beach Office of Vocations www.diocesepb.org/vocations PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS April 20, 2014 Father, you call each one of us by name and ask us to follow you. Our smiles and greetings of “Happy Easter” are symbols of our interior deep joyfulness. We have journeyed with Our Lord through His sufferings, sacrifices, death and Resurrection. We have tried to understand the depth of His faith and trust in His Father’s love. During Lent we have also tried to imitate His loving obedience to His Father’s will. The immensity of His sacrifice to the point of giving over His life for us is a challenge and invitation that we have struggled with as well. Finally His selfless love for His Father and for us has set the standard for our efforts to purify intentions and reach out in love toward God and neighbor. We have journeyed with the Lord, now we celebrate His victory. It is important that as we have grown in faith, hope, and love during the Holy Season of Lent that we continue to do so during the Easter season and beyond. Periods of intense and careful attention to our spirituality need to be built upon. Advent and Lent are meant to give us stronger, deeper foundations for building stronger and more heroic virtue. It is up to us to share our joy, to make a difference for the good and to keep Easter Resurrection an ever present truth. We have died with Christ and have been re-born as new creations. Everything that we do as Resurrection people has the potential to brighten and dazzle our world with the faithful love of God and the inspiring vision of Jesus Christ Risen. Happy Easter! There are many ministries and programs supported by this annual appeal. Because of the DSA, and your generosity, the Diocese can continue to support the many aspects of our larger Church, including the 53 parishes and missions, and our 19 schools. The DSA is the primary source of funding for the Diocese, providing more than 70 percent of the annual operating income. The strength of our diocese comes from us recognizing God’s gifts and sharing a portion of these gifts for building up the Kingdom of God. Please contribute to the Diocesan Services Appeal and help us meet our Parish Goal. RELIGIOUS ARTICLES STORE Laura Watzek, 561-393-0006. Hours: Mon - Fri, 7:30 am to 4:30 pm. JOAN OF ARC l APRIL 20 MAKING AN EASTER FAMILY TRADITION All the seasons of the Church’s liturgical year are beautiful and important. Perhaps Christmas is the season around which families develop the most traditions but Easter is also a great season to gather as family and learn more about our faith. Creating traditions and passing them on to the children is a wonderful way for them to keep the faith in their hearts. Here are some ideas to start your own Easter Family Tradition. Sharing New Clothes: It’s always fun to wear new clothes and show them off. But teach the children that they don’t get new clothes to show off to other kids but to celebrate the new life of Christ. You may do this by buying an extra outfit to share with a needy child in the community. Reading the Easter Story: Easter baskets full of chocolate bunnies and goodies and egg hunts and are always an exciting activity. But don’t forget to remind your child of the real meaning of Easter, make it a tradition to read a child’s version of the story of Easter before opening the Easter basket. And saying a family prayer of thanksgiving for life. Planting a new seed: In celebration of the death, burial and resurrection some families may enjoy planting seeds either for a garden, or just for some pretty flowers. Jesus talked about a seed needing to be planted and die so that it can rise again with multiplied life (John 12:24). This is a good object lesson you can use to teach your children about Easter. An Easter prayer tree: There are trees with Easter themed ornaments, like eggs, ducks and butterflies. You may want to create your own paper ornaments and have each family member write a prayer of thanksgiving that can be used as blessings for the family meal gathering during the Easter Season. Sunrise Mass : Getting your children up early on Easter Sunday and attending a sunrise mass can create great memories. An early morning sunrise service will help your family remember the beauty of that special day. R.C.I.A. RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS Congratulations to the adults who received the sacraments of Initiation during the Easter Vigil. They now begin the stage of MYSTAGOGY. The word comes from the Greek meaning “to lead through the mysteries” or “to study/reflect on the mysteries. In the primitive church it was a period of post-baptismal catechesis. The neophytes are those who were recently initiated into the Church through the sacraments of baptism, confirmation, and Eucharist. During the Easter season, and often throughout the year after, they spend time reflecting on the mysteries. But their practice of mystagogy is simply participation in what all baptized Christians are called to do. All of us who are baptized, whether last year or many years ago, are called to constantly reflect on our experience of God, discern its meaning, renew our commitment to our baptismal promises, and commit ourselves to living those promises in the ordinary events of our daily life. And the season of Easter is the perfect time to do that. FAMILY FAITH & FUN DAY, A GREAT SUCCESS! ! JOAN OF ARC CATHOLIC SCHOOL AT BOCA'S EGG-A-PALOOZA! On Sunday, April 6 our SJA School participated in a community event at Mizner Park. Children of all ages enjoyed a visit with the Easter Bunny and many games. Mrs. Bradley, Miss Farrington and the Sisters of Mercy greeted the families and gave out goodies to the children. We are so proud to participate in our community events! APRIL 20 l ST. JOAN OF ARC l 7 A WONDERFUL FAMILY, FAITH & FUN DAY AT ST. JOAN OF ARC On Saturday, April 5, we celebrated our 4th Annual Family Faith & Fun Day. Msgr. Michael D. McGraw, started this tradition to reinforce the bonds of friendship and faith in the community. He stated: “We need to create a culture that is more focused on people and not on things and a culture that is simple, welcoming and joyful.” And that is exactly what this fun day was, a welcoming and joyful day where children laughed and played while their parents strengthened friendships and enjoyed the entertainment offered as well as watching their children's thrill and happiness. Family, Faith & Fun Day offered many amusement rides for the children: bounce houses, bungee jumping, pony rides, a petting zoo, lots of games with fun prizes, face-painting, a bake sale and many more activities that delighted the families present. St. Joan of Arc School's Drama Club performed mini skits, and their cheerleaders kept everyone in high spirits, Maggie Baugh's performance, a dynamic young girl that plays the guitar, fiddle, and classical violin, was fantastic. All these great features of the event were mostly sponsored by school and parish families as well as by local businesses which made the event a truly FUN-raiser. This tradition has accomplished its goal of 'family joy", make sure you don't miss next year's event! 8 l ST. JOAN OF ARC l APRIL 13 APRIL 13 l ST. JOAN OF ARC l 9 10 l ST. JOAN OF ARC l APRIL 20 APRIL 20 l ST. JOAN OF ARC l 11 12 l ST. JOAN OF ARC l APRIL 20 FROM THE DIRECTOR OF PARISH SOCIAL OUTREACH MINISTRIES HOMEBOUND & HOSPITAL MINISTRY Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion who take Communion to the sick in the hospital, nursing home or to the homebound are, in a most special way, bringing Christ Himself to those who are in need of spiritual as well as physical healing. The EMHC is the representative of the faith community as they share the Eucharist with those who are unable to attend Mass. This important ministry demonstrates the concern of the community at large and is a sharing of the Christian unity and caring support that we have for one another. The prayers shared by the EMHC during their brief encounter with the people they serve bring a moment of peace and joy into what is otherwise a stressful and uncomfortable situation. Patients who are in the hospital find it a comfort and source of healing to have Holy Communion brought to them as often as possible. The people who receive the Eucharist from the EMHCs are extremely grateful for this ministry and the people who participate in it. One person, who did not happen to be a parishioner at St. Joan of Arc, sent a thank you note to our parish writing, “While at the hospital someone from your church brought me Communion every day. It brought me great comfort. I am currently a member of another parish in the area but will visit your church when I am well. Thank you so much for your kindness.” The joy that is experienced by the EMHC when they see the response of the people that they serve is hard to describe. The humility that one receives when encountering the devotion of those who are suffering greatly is also a great gift for the minister. Ministering to the homebound is also of great importance for the spiritual needs of those who are isolated and alone; bringing Communion to them is a special experience for both the minister and the recipient. There are also those family members who are commissioned to bring the Holy Eucharist on a regular basis to a relative who is homebound and unable to attend Mass. This part of the ministry can be especially rewarding when the sharing of this sacrament gives not only the spiritual aid to the person being served but also a special bond is formed by Christ Himself who is the Heavenly Meal that is brought by these earthly angels who serve Him so unselfishly. No: Cristo vive.
