he Middletown City School District is changing how the community
thinks about itself, its children and its future, according to Gettingsmart.
com. The website ranks the district sixth among 25 schools worth visiting
nationally, because of Middletown’s commitment and progress made
toward college and career readiness through personalized and competencybased instructional programs. The website says Middletown makes career
preparation a priority, with communications, critical thinking,
creativity and collaboration.

Capital improvements to our schools need your vote on Dec. 9
Building conditions, health and safety concerns for
students are always a major priority
Why?
• Our student population continues to grow (we are one of a few districts in New York doing so)
• The high school is overcrowded and will be 64 percent over capacity by September of 2017
• Deteriorating parking lots and sidewalks are creating safety hazards for parents and students
• Heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) upgrades are desperately needed
• Most school roofs need repairs and/or replacement
Capital Improvement Proposition 1
(Zero tax levy increase)
Proposition No. 1 primarily calls for significant additions/renovations to the high school
in order to provide appropriate classroom
and lab spaces for that building’s growing
student population. These projects include:
the construction of a third-floor addition
onto the high school that will provide 11
classrooms and additional project labs, a
10,000 square-foot addition within the existing courtyard, along with renovation of six
technology classrooms that have significant
water/moisture problems.
Additional projects include: significant
heating and cooling projects at Twin Towers,
Monhagen, Maple Hill and Carter, as well as
fire and safety improvements to all of our
schools. (A complete list of projects is on the
right side of this page.)
The total for Proposition No. 1’s significant
additions and renovations and other necessary projects total $38.8 million – BUT WILL
NOT INCREASE THE TAX LEVY – as the dis-

Capital Improvement Proposition 2
The projects contained in Proposition No.
2, although smaller in size, are significantly
important to the proper maintenance and
stability of our school buildings, as well as
the health and safety of our students. This
proposition also includes projects that will
replace and improve parking lots and sidewalks. It will improve some sport venues,
leading to public use of the high school tennis courts.
This proposition was added because these
needs were greater than could be supported
without tax levy impact. Capital improvements contained in Proposition No. 2 take
effect only if Proposition #1 passes.
The total cost for Proposition No. 2 is $7.4
million, with an estimated tax levy impact of
only $8.60 for the average home.

Middletown High School had 19 students
who received NYSSMA Zone 9 Area All-State
recognition for their vocal or instrumental talents, and then took part in the festival on Nov.
21-22 at Wallkill High School.
The event featured the honors ensembles,
which consisted of those students who
earned the highest scores at last year's
NYSSMA Zone 9 spring solo evaluations.
Zone 9 is comprised of schools from Orange,
Rockland, Ulster, Sullivan and Greene counties.

Maple Hill art teachers receive state-wide recognition

Elementary School art teachers, have been recognized by Artsonia for outstanding leadership in the
area of arts education at the school.
Artsonia, the world's largest online kids' art museum, ranks Maple Hill No. 8 in New York for its online
gallery.
The award honors teachers who go beyond the
classroom walls to encourage family and community
involvement in arts education. The award also recognizes significant achievement in the area of technology integration within the school arts program. State
rankings are based on specific criteria, which demonstrate both aspects of the award.
During the 2013-14 school year, DeGroot and Perna
loaded 8,832 pieces of student artwork onto the Maple

collection has been visited more than 110,200 times.

board members from across the state viewed the artwork and saw the artistic
excellence and evidence of art education in our schools.

‘Miracle at Middletown’ leads to first winning season since 2001
T
he Middletown football team’s turnaround season can be pinpointed to
a night folks likely will talk about for
decades.
The Middies finished with a 5-4 record,
and just missed the Section 9 Class AA
playoffs – losing at state-ranked Newburgh
Free Academy in a game Middletown
needed to qualify.
“This was an excellent season for us,”
said Middletown coach Bill Donohue, a
center on the school’s last Section 9 finalist
team (1996). “Even though we did not
make the playoffs (one of our goals), we
know that we accomplished something
monumental.
“We established the first winning season
in over a decade. We put ourselves in the
conversation as one of the top teams in the
section. We established a reputation as a
tough and physical team that would play
all four quarters and finally, we gave the
community hope for the future.”
But a night in early September, forever to
be known as "The Miracle at Middletown,"
is where the run started. The Middies
pulled off arguably the greatest comeback
in school history as it scored 14 points in
the final 43.2 seconds and shocked Port
Jervis 36-33 and reclaimed the Erie Bell at
Faller Field.
Given the stakes of this being one of the
Middletown players and cheerleaders celebrate around the Erie Bell after the Port Jervis
victory. The bell is the trophy that goes to the winner of one of the nation’s longest annual rivalries and will sit in the Middletown lobby until at least next year.

bright, thanks to sophomore Jordan Bryan.
He ran for 1,451 yards on just 124 carries,
with 16 touchdowns.

State boys’ soccer tournament boosts local economy
T
he recent state boys’ soccer tournament at Middletown’s Faller Field
complex pumped at least an estimated
$500,000 into the local economy, Middletown athletic director David Coates
believes.
“That’s a conservative estimate,”
Coates said. “We should be very appreciative about having the opportunity to
host such an event. Many people are

benefitting from so many people coming into our area.”
The event, now in its fifth straight year,
featured 20 of the top boys’ soccer
teams from around the state. Five state
champions were crowned, and nearly
20,000 people attended the 15 games.
The opening ceremonies were held Nov.
14, with the games played Nov. 15-16.
“We’re looking forward to producing
even better championship events in the
future,” Coates said. “Events that will
boost our local economy.”
This was the seventh state championship Middletown has hosted in
recent years. Aside from the five soccer
events, Middletown hosted the state
track and field championships in 2013
and the state boys’ lacrosse championships in 2012.
