Some economists say that the housing crisis is ending and that banks
are lending to stimulate the economy. This forecast seems optimistic,
but we continue working to ensure
that if this crisis continues or another
takes place we’re ready with alternatives for people with low or unstable
incomes. For example, we are working with hundreds of homeowners
whose loans are higher than the
value of their homes. With this we
are helping them to refinance and/or
modify their loans. In some of these
cases homeowners and counselors
have worked together with lenders in
order to lower their loan balance.

Bella Project
For those who are not homeowners
or those who cannot get a mortgage loan, we are working on
two rental housing projects: Borinquen Bella with 47 units
and Yerba Buena with 42. These projects have been fasttracked so that construction can begin as soon as possible.
Borinquen Bella will be under construction this summer and
we hope that by next summer the first families will be occupying the renovated apartments. In Yerba Buena’s case, we
hope to close financing by the summer of 2013 and to start
construction quickly thereafter.
On other fronts, we continue training residents in energy
conservation. We also have home repair programs provided
at no cost for the participants. Each dollar that you save
could be used in other important areas of your life.
During these hard times when many are losing their homes
LUCHA is committed to serving the people of our community. We encourage readers to call us if they have any housing problems and don't have the money to solve it. Perhaps
one of our programs can help address the situation.

proyectos de vivienda de alquiler: Borinquen Bella de 47 unidades y Yerba Buena de 42. Estos proyectos los hemos acelerado para que estén en construcción cuanto antes posible. Borinquen Bella estará en construcción este verano y esperamos
que para el próximo verano las primeras familias ya se estén
ocupando los apartamentos renovados. En el caso de Yerba
Buena, esperamos cerrar el financiamiento para el verano del
año que viene y rápidamente empezar la construcción.
En otros frentes, seguimos capacitando a los residentes como
economizar energía. Además tenemos otros programas de reparar apartamentos sin costos para los participantes. Cada

Mya Carter is our new Community Organizer. In 2009 she
graduated from Northern Illinois University where she received a
degree in Spanish with a concentration in Business and Translation. She recently returned from El Salvador where she was a
Peace Corps Volunteer and trained community leaders in preventive health measures. In addition, she gained two years of
community organizing experience. She is excited to be part of
LUCHA and serve the community where she grew up.

It’s that time of the year when high school seniors apply
and wait for college admission. For LUCHA tenant, Siomara Martinez, it is a busy time. With her dreams of going
to college nearing, her biggest concern is whether she can
afford the college costs.
Es el tiempo cuando estudiantes en su último año de la secundaria

The cost of one year of college education now averages
$20,000. With many students taking five years to finish
college, this means education costs can easily add up to
$100,000. This huge expense places demands on the finances of most families. Sometimes the costs become a
barrier to continuing education. As Siomara and other students prepare to go to college in the fall, they should apply
for financial aid and grants as soon
as possible.

Free Application for Federal Student
Aid (FAFSA) is a state and federal
aid program for students who are
attending an accredited university or
college to help pay for educational
expenses such as tuition, fees, and
books. For more information or to fill
out the FAFSA online, log on to
www.fafsa.ed.gov or call 1-800-8010576.
Federal Pell Grant assists eligible
low- and middle-income students to
attend a university or college. Pell Grants are awarded to
undergraduate students who qualify based on their financial need and don’t have to be repaid. They can be used
for tuition, fees, and living expenses. When students apply
for the FAFSA, they are automatically considered for a Pell
Grant.
There are also community organizations that provide individual assistance. The website http://
www.knowhow2goillinois.org lists college access programs
in Illinois. These programs may provide financial services,
academic counseling, and other complementary social services. You can search by zip code to find the resources
closest to you.
If the student is undocumented, they should be aware that
the state passed the Illinois DREAM Act. This law permits
undocumented students who attended high school in the
United States to pay the in-state tuition instead of the
higher rate. In addition, a DREAM Fund will be established
with private money to provide financial assistance. More
information can be found at http://www.collegeillinois.org/
home/illinois-dream-act.html .
In addition, college students should consider applying for
private scholarships and grants. High school and college
counselors have an idea of scholarship programs available, but students also have to be proactive and search for
them.
If college expenses are still too high, a popular moneysaving strategy is to earn credits in a community college
and then transfer to a four-year college. Students should
speak with their academic advisor to make sure that their
college credits will be transferred.

Neighbors Unite to Clean Up

2012. The 23rd annual Clean and Green Volunteer Clean Up
was held on April 21 in Humboldt Park. Community activists,
neighbors and local service
organizations banded together to pick up trash and
ensure the park is clean, safe
and accessible to community
members.
