Una Mejor Salud a través de
la Vivienda
In our day to day work LUCHA sees many
families struggle to pay for food, housing
and medical bills. A recent national study
shows a strong connection between housing instability and poor health. Families that
are behind on rent are twice as likely to
compromise health, experience depression,
and hospitalizations. In addition, these families cannot afford healthy, nutritious food.
These facts lead us to conclude that housing is a key component of wellness.

recientemente revela una fuerte relación

Hernández, ve la necesidad de mejorar la
salud y el bienestar de los residentes de la
comunidad. En las comunidades pobres
“estamos más preocupados por poder pagar los gastos básicos y perdemos foco en
los problemas grandes que afectan la salud de la comunidad”, dijo Hernández. En
su opinión, LUCHA podría ayudar a estabilizar estas familias vinculándolas a organizaciones locales que las ayuden a mejorar
su salud y bienestar. “Organizaciones culturales, como PRAA, juegan un rol esencial en mejorar ese sentido general de
bienestar”.
En el ambiente social de hoy, es de extrema importancia encontrar maneras de conectar la salud con la vivienda. Una encuesta de salud realizada recientemente
por el Centro Médico del Hospital Mt. Sinaí
reveló que existen grandes disparidades
de salud en Humboldt Park. Estas no existen en otras zonas de la ciudad que tienen
mejores ingresos y conocimiento de salud.

Through our 30 years of serving the community we
have developed and maintained our properties
thinking about the importance that they have for the
mental, physical, and spiritual health of those that
occupy them. It’s in these homes that we spend a
great amount of our time. There we raise families,
receive friends and family members. There we also
celebrate important dates of our lives. Therefore we
say, “we live at” and give the direction of our house.
All of these reasons make the housing that LUCHA creates
and promotes a great importance to the residents in the
community. This is why we believe that we ought to advocate for apartments that help residents live healthier lives.
The homes that we grow up in should circulate clean air and
a good temperature, have running water, be free of vermin,
have surroundings that are clean and pleasing to the
senses. In addition, they should be safe for those that live
there and visitors. However, our housing concept isn’t limited to the four walls; the neighborhood where they are located should contribute to the total health of the residents
with services that enable the development of those who live
there. Therefore, we are involved in other areas that help
our renters and clients: culture, schools, police protection,
etc.

estas tienen para la salud mental, física y espiritual de los que las ocupan. Es en estas que pasamos gran cantidad de nuestro tiempo. Allí
criamos familia, recibimos nuestros amigos y
familiares. Allí también celebramos las fechas
importantes de nuestras vidas. Es por eso que
decimos, “vivimos en” y damos la dirección de nuestra casa.
Todas estas razones hacen de gran importancia la vivienda que
LUCHA crea y promueve para los residentes de la comunidad.
Es por esto que creemos que debemos abogar por viviendas
que ayuden a los residentes a vivir vidas más saludables.
Las viviendas en las que crecemos deben circular aire limpio y a
buena temperatura, agua potable, estar libre de sabandija, tener
unos alrededores limpios y agradables a los sentidos. Además
ésta debe ser segura para los que en esta viven y los que la visitan. Sin embargo, nuestro concepto de vivienda no se limita a las
cuatro paredes, el vecindario en que están localizadas deberá
contribuir a la salud total de los residentes con servicios que permiten el desarrollo de los que allí habitamos. Por tanto, nos envolvemos en otras áreas que ayudan a nuestros inquilinos y
clientes: cultura, escuelas, protección policiaca, etc.

We have various projects in development and on concept
that will further our work in this respect. For example, the
Borinquen Bella project of 47 apartments for people of lowincome and the Yerba Buena project of 42 apartments with
special concentration on the wellbeing of its residents.

screening, treatment, improve overall wellness and encourage
healthy living in the neighborhood. Leaders from various community organizations are working together to improve the wellbeing of community residents. Understanding the importance
of these health factors, LUCHA is rethinking its approach to
housing development and services to be able to play a
stronger role in helping residents live healthier lives.

In our last edition we introduced Yerba Buena, our new development project of 42 units of affordable housing. Since then
we’ve been hard at work developing Yerba Buena’s wellness
concept and gathering support. With input from the community
this project goes beyond bricks and mortar to focus on wellness and healthy lifestyles. During our outreach we spoke with
leaders of local organizations to get their input on how we can
incorporate wellness into our project.
En nuestra última edición presentamos el proyecto Yerba
Buena que desarrollará 42 unidades de vivienda asequible
para familias de bajos ingresos. Desde entonces hemos trabajado para elaborar el concepto de este proyecto el cual se
enfoca en contribuir al bienestar total de sus residentes. Con
las ideas que hemos recogido de lideres de la comunidad,
este proyecto va más allá de varilla y cemento, añadiendo
elementos esenciales que ayuden a mejorar el bienestar y la
salud. Durante nuestros diálogos con líderes comunitarios
hemos obtenido una serie de recomendaciones de cómo
podemos incorporar la salud a nuestro proyecto.

family members involved in some
kind of physical activity is the key to
having a healthy family and community.” Lopez believes residents
could grow their own foods through
urban gardening and be more ac-
tive politically.
The themes that we’ve gathered from these meetings were
universal. Access to primary healthcare and nutritious food,
proximity to open space for physical activity, community involvement and advocacy, green space that could be used for
gardens, and linkages to local organizations that provide supportive services for individuals and families are all important
ideas that we will take into consideration as we move forward
with Yerba Buena.
In the upcoming months we will continue reaching out to the
community and begin forming support groups for this project. If

JCUA’s Week With LUCHA
In June, LUCHA hosted three interns through a new partnership with the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs (JCUA).
The three students were participating in a JCUA program
called Or Tzedek, which brings teens together to work for
social justice throughout Chicago.
During their week at LUCHA, they
explored the Humboldt Park community to survey prospective affordable housing sites and speak
to local residents about life in the
neighborhood. At the end of the
internship, they presented their
findings and ideas to LUCHA.

Help For The Hardest Hit
When Antonio Lopez came to LUCHA, he was three months
behind on his mortgage. He had always worked, but this time
he was experiencing a lengthy lay off. With persistence, he
found a new job, but making less money than needed to pay
his bills. He was worried that if things continued this way, that
he would lose his home. He had already tried to modify his
mortgage, but the bank rejected him. Soon his home would
be put up for sale.
Cuando Antonio López llegó a LUCHA, tenía tres meses de
atraso en su hipoteca. Siempre había trabajado, pero esta
vez estaba experimentando un extenso despido. Con persistencia, encontró un nuevo trabajo, pero ganando menos de
lo necesario para pagar sus cuentas. Estaba preocupado de
que si las cosas seguían así, iba a perder su casa. Ya había
intentado a modificar su hipoteca, pero el banco le había

Counselor Lizbeth Davila informed Mr. Lopez of the Illinois
Hardest Hit Funds (HHF). This program helps families that
are experiencing problems paying their mortgage with up to
$25,000 of assistance. Davila explained that in order to qualify, applicants should own and live in a 1-4 unit property and
that they must be unemployed or underemployed with at least
25% income reduction. In addition, the applicant must actively pursue re-employment or participate in a job training
program.

Facing a pending sale, Mr. Lopez and his counselor, Ms.
Davila, worked fast to get all the paperwork together for the
HHF application. Davila also coordinated with the bank and
its attorney to stop the sale of the property. Mr. Lopez was
excited when application was approved. He received $25,000
of assistance and was able to save his home. In June, Mr.
Lopez found a new job that allowed him to resume his mortgage payments.

Help Restore Two Historic Murals!
As part of our Borinquen Bella apartment renovations, LUCHA is beginning
the restoration of two historic murals! “Honor Boricua” and “Breaking the
Chains” represent an important aspect of the history and culture of Humboldt
Park. Hector Duarte, the original artist, will restore Honor Boricua. John Pitman Weber, also the original painter, will restore Breaking the Chains
(Rompiendo las Cadenas), which is one of the oldest surviving outdoor murals.
There are opportunities to get involved, learn about the history of murals in the
community, help paint and design a new temporary mural. LUCHA received
funding from the Illinois Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts and
other supporters to engage local youth and community members in the restoration. Come learn how to paint a mural!

Pronto LUCHA comenzará la restauración de dos murales históricos! "Honor
Boricua" y "Rompiendo Las Cadenas" los cuales representan aspectos
importante de la historia y la cultura de Humboldt Park. “Honor Boricua”, en
1318 N. Rockwell, será restaurado por el artista original Héctor Duarte.
“Rompiendo las Cadenas”, en 1456 N. Rockwell, uno de los murales al aire
libre más antiguo en el pais, será restaurado por el artista original John
Pitman Weber. Hay oportunidades de participar, aprender sobre la historia de
los murales, ayudar a pintar y diseñar un mural temporario. LUCHA recibió
fondos del Consejo de Artes de Illinois, del Fondo Nacional para las Artes y
de otras fundaciones para facilitar la restauración de estos murales con la

Introducing LUCHA’s Newest Staff Members/ Presentando a los Nuevos Empleados de LUCHA
Katrina Benns is our new Director of
Neighborhood Reinvestments. She
comes to LUCHA with 10 years of
professional banking and management experience. Katrina holds a
Bachelors of Science in Finance and
Business Administration from Tuskegee University, and Masters in Urban
Planning and Policy from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Katrina is
enthusiastic about serving others and
eager to continue the great work that
LUCHA is known for.
Salvador and Katrina
Salvador Muñoz is our new Foreclosure Outreach/
Community Organizer. He also graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2012 with a Bachelors of Arts in
English and Latin American/Latino Studies. Along with his
academic studies, he took part in the Urban Public Policy
Fellowship and organized around the national and Illinois
Dream Act. He looks forward to the challenges and rewards that LUCHA will bring.

Ella llega a LUCHA con 10 años de experiencia en dirección y trabajando en
la banca. Katrina tiene una licenciatura
en Ciencias en Finanzas y Administración de Empresas de la Universidad de
Tuskegee, y una maestría en Urbanismo y Política de la UIC. Katrina está
entusiasmada de servir a los demás y
dispuesta a continuar el gran trabajo
por el cual LUCHA es conocido.
Salvador Muñoz es nuestro nuevo Consejero de Ejecuciones
Hipotecarias/Organizador Comunitario. En 2012, se graduó
de la Universidad de Illinois en Chicago donde estudió Inglés
y Estudios Latinos. En conjunción con sus estudios, participó
en una beca de investigación sobre políticas pública urbano y
propugnó por el DREAM Act (nacional y Illinois). Él espera
con gran anticipación los desafíos y recompensas que LUCHA presentará.
