ahead for this school year.

Dear Eastwood Families,
Welcome back to school for the 2016-17 school year! I hope you have had a restful and enjoyable summer. I am excited to start
another great school year with all of you as we look forward to continuing many great experiences, such as continuing our Right
Brain Arts Integration Program, our Dual Language Program through 5th grade, and focusing on quality instruction with a positive
learning environment for our students!
Here is some helpful information for the school year:
Parent/Teacher Association: We have a very active PTA at our school and are always looking for new members! This group does
amazing things for the school from raising important funds to provide materials and programs to our students, to organizing
wonderful family events! Please come join us every second Tuesday of the month at 6:30 pm in the library. You can find more
information about PTA events in our newsletter and on our school website.
Volunteering: We love parent volunteers at Eastwood! If you would like to volunteer, visit the district website for the volunteer
application and information at www.hsd.k12.or.us. You can also visit the Eastwood office if you don’t have internet access, and
we can help you with the application.
Bus Routes: The District Transportation Department will continue to offer an online application for parents to access routing and
scheduling information, determine walk zones, and more. Please refer to the myBus packet for instructions on how to access the
system. You will not be receiving bus route or walker status notification by mail. If you have questions, please contact the
Transportation Department at 503-844-1123. Please let us know of any childcare or address changes right away.
Office Hours: Our office opens on August 18. Please call (503) 844-1725 or come by between the hours of 7:30 am-3:30 pm. We
can answer your questions, help you with the registration process or provide you with a school supply list. You can also look on
the district or school website for the supply list.
Back to School Night:
I hope to see all of you at our first family event on Thursday, September 1. This Back to School Night
will be at 6 pm. We invite you to celebrate the beginning of the school year by meeting your child’s
teacher and other staff, bringing in school supplies to the classroom, and having a sweet treat. Teachers
will also present curriculum information in two 20 minute sessions: 6:20 pm and 6:45 pm. in their
classrooms. We hope to see you there!
Start and end times: School will begin at 8:00 am and dismiss at 2:20 pm, except on Wednesdays,
when dismissal is at 1:50 pm to accommodate Academic Seminar time for teachers. Students can start
eating breakfast and come into the gym at 7:30 am, and will be picked up by their classroom teacher in
the gym at 7:45 am. If your student arrives after 7:45, they can go straight to class, until 8:00 am, and
then they would need to check in with the office before heading to class.

Kindergarten: We are very excited about our second year of all-day kindergarten! They will follow the same schedule as grades
1-6, except that their first day of school is two days later on Thursday, September 8. We will be notifying you soon to make an
appointment on either September 6 or 7 for kinder assessments. The first two days of kindergarten will be a community
kindergarten, where students will be getting to know all the kinder teachers and other staff members, and they will not have an
assigned teacher yet. On Friday, September 9, we will create class lists and notify all parents of who their child’s assigned teacher
is beginning on Monday, September 12. This will allow us time to have a lottery, if needed, for those who would like to have their
child participate in the Dual Language Program.
Attendance and contact information: Please call our 24-hour attendance line at 503-844-1728 if your child is absent. For the
safety of our children, it is vital that you call us. Also, if your address or phone numbers change, please notify the school office
immediately.

through ParentVUE) to ensure we can reach you in the event of an emergency.

DENTAL SCREENING REQUIREMENTS
State law now requires a child who
is 7 years of age or younger to have a
dental screening before entering school
for the first time. Parents of incoming
kindergartners will either need to acknowledge that their child has been
screened, request an opt-out from

Hillsboro School District Transportation Department presents its
new online application—myBus!
Parents and guardians can now determine if their student is
in a designated walk zone or on a bus route using the myBus
website. If your student takes the bus, you can retrieve routes,
schedules, pickup or dropoff stops, and other information.
Simply use your student’s school ID and birthdate to log in to the website!
Access to myBus will begin August 20. At the beginning of the school year, as
Transportation finalizes bus routes, changes will be automatically posted—be
sure to check myBus regularly! myBus also will be updated as students change
enrollment or are approved for alternate transportation. myBus is a quick and
easy way to check your student’s bus information at any time.
Check out myBus by scanning the QR code with your smartphone or by
visiting the website. If you don’t have internet access or need further
information, Transportation staff will continue to be available to assist you.

2016-17 Annual Notice for Statewide Tests
ALL STUDENTS GRADUATE PREPARED
In 2010, Oregon adopted higher K-12 standards in English Language
Arts and Math to ensure all students move from grade to grade with
the academic knowledge and skills necessary for success beyond
high school. Because we raised the bar for what we expect students
to know and be able to do, we have also changed the way we
measure student progress through our state tests, known as Smarter
Balanced.
Why does participation matter?
While no single test can give a complete picture of your child’s
progress, having your child take the statewide tests provides
educators and administrators with information about what
educational approaches are working and where additional
resources are needed. Your child’s participation is important to
ensure schools and districts receive the targeted resources they
need to help all students succeed.
Description of rights
House Bill 2655 permits parents and adult students to annually optout of Oregon’s statewide summative tests in English Language Arts
and Math by submitting an annual form to the school the student
attends. Schools will provide parents with the annual form for 201617 at least 30 days prior to the start of testing. Visit this link to learn

Standard Response Protocol (SRP). The SRP is based
on these four actions. Lockout, Lockdown, Evacuate
and Shelter. In the event of an emergency, the
action and appropriate direction will be called on
the PA.

tipo de amenaza o riesgo dentro del edificio de la escuela.
LOS ESTUDIANTES:
• Se desplazan a un lugar donde no se les vea

• Bloquean las puertas del salón (con los cerrojos)
• Apagan las luces

PROTOCOLO SRP
Nuestra escuela va a ampliar el programa
de seguridad a fin de incluir el Protocolo
de Respuesta Estándar (SRP por su sigla
en inglés). El protocolo SRP se basa en estas
cuatro acciones: acceso bloqueado (lockout),
cierre de emergencia (lockdown), evacuación
(evacuate) y buscar resguardo (shelter). En el
caso de que se presente una situación de
emergencia la acción y las instrucciones se
explicarán por el sistema de comunicaciones
con amplificación.
LOCKOUT (acceso bloqueado): confirmar
que el área alrededor del edificio es segura.
LOCKDOWN (cierre de emergencia):
bloqueo de puertas, luces apagadas, fuera
de la vista.
EVACUATE (evacuación): a un lugar
determinado.
SHELTER (buscar resguardo): cuando hay
un riesgo, usando una estrategia de
seguridad.
CAPACITACIÓN
Se ruega que dediquen un momento a revisar
estas acciones. Los estudiantes y el personal
recibirán capacitación y la escuela practicará
estas acciones durante el año escolar.

A UN LUGAR DETERMINADO
La evacuación (evacuate) se establece para llevarse a los estudiantes
y al personal de un lugar a otro.
LOS ESTUDIANTES:
• Se llevan sus teléfonos
• Dejan el resto de sus cosas donde estén
• Forman una fila de uno
• Mantienen las manos a la vista
• Están preparados para posibles alternativas durante las
acciones de respuesta
LOS DOCENTES:
• Se llevan la lista de la clase con ellos si es posible
• Dirigen a los estudiantes a la ubicación que se haya establecido
para las situaciones de evacuación
• Pasan lista y saben dónde están todos los estudiantes
SHELTER (BUSCAR RESGUARDO)
CUANDO HAY UN RIESGO, USANDO UNA ESTRATEGIA
DE SEGURIDAD
La búsqueda de resguardo (shelter) se establece cuando es necesario
proteger a las personas.
EJEMPLOS DE RIESGOS:
•Tornado
• Materiales peligrosos
EJEMPLOS DE ESTRATEGIAS DE SEGURIDAD:
• Evacuar a un área resguardada
• Sellar el salón
