SIR: I have to acknowledge receipt of your communication of the 5th of April, 1904, relative to the condition of banks and banking in this Republic and the financial condition of the country. In reply I beg to return herewith, duly filled out, the forms accompanying yours of the 5th ultimo, showing statements of the conditions as on December 31, 1903, of the National Bank of Cuba and the Royal Bank of Canada. The bond issues of 1896-97 constitute the only debt of the Republic, as follows: Issue of 1896: 2,098 bonds of 81,000 97 bonds of S500 379 bonds of $50 Issue of 1897: 44 bonds of $10 159 bonds of $5 $2,098,000 48,500 18, 950 440 795 There is no floating debt. I inclose herewith a copy of the report of the auditor-general of Cuba, wherein you will find data relative to the revenues and expenditures from May 20, 1902, to June 30, 1903 (last fiscal year).
