Photo © Robert Cushman Hayes, www.hayesphoto.com, All Rights Reserved My dear parishioners, Last week I wrote to you about Chiara Corbella Petrillo, the lady who lost two children immediately after childbirth and then was diagnosed with cancer when she was pregnant with her third. Chiara and her husband, Enrico, were pressured to abort the two first children because they had no chance of survival after birth. They refused and carried the children to term. Chiara gave birth, had the babies baptized and held them as they died. After the birth and death of the first child, many people came to the church for the funeral. After the second, many of those who attended the first funeral did not attend the second one, but others came out to support. Chiara and Enrico loved their children and it did not matter if they lived a hundred years or a hundred minutes, they loved them intensely and completely. Since the problems of their two children were not due to any genetic disease, they decided to try for a third child. Francesco was born on May 30, 2011, but during the pregnancy, a tumor was found on Chiara’s tongue. It turned out to be cancer. She had an operation on it but refused radiation and chemotherapy while she was pregnant. She wanted her child to live and to be healthy. After Francesco was born, she had another operation and she suffered greatly. The doctors began other treatment, but unfortunately, it did not work. Less than a year after the birth of Francesco, on Wednesday of Holy Week, Chiara was told by her husband, in front of the Blessed Sacrament, that she was terminally ill. They embraced and renewed their marriage vows. Chiara died on June 13, 2012. We can read this story and feel a great sadness, but Chiara and Enrico did not see it that way. They truly believed in the glory that awaits in heaven and saw each moment as a gift from God. There is a newly published book by Sophia Institute Press that tells her story, Chiara Corbella Petrillo: Witness to Joy by Simone Troisi and Cristiana Paccini. I encourage you to read it. I leave you with the words Chiara and Enrico wrote to their first child Maria and placed in her coffin: “We were content to hold you in our arms, for even half an hour, we were fine. We were not able to stop looking at your nose, the same as mine, and those little hands, and those little feet. We did not have much time to tell you… that we love you… It does not matter how much time we spend together… What is necessary is to know the Father… And you were born ready, I do not know how to tell you how proud we are of you. We accompanied you as far as we were able. Now you shall know the Father…” God Bless, Fr. Avoid being victimized by maintaining alertness while shopping. Avoid traveling alone. Don't leave packages in your car. Dad used to say, "Keep honest people honest." If you become the victim of a crime, no matter how trivial you feel it may be, please report it to the NYPD via 911. While doing so may seem a waste of time, it is the only way the Police can adjust their tactics to reduce future occurrences. When crimes are reported, patterns develop and Precinct Commanders are compelled by the Commissioner to increase patrols and utilize special task forces like Anti-Burglary teams. The resources won't be directed to our community unless the crimes get reported. Only then do things get better. Also, if you haven't replaced the batteries in your smoke detectors, do it now! Life is precious! See you at Mass. Sincerely, Dan Maher Are you bored on Sundays? We have a new youth group that meets on Sundays, 4:30 pm until 6 pm (7 pm on second and fourth Sundays). No importa cuánto tiempo pasamos juntos…
