Low-Dose Aspirin for Primary Prevention of Cardiovascular Events in Elderly Patients With Multiple Atherosclerotic Risk Factors: A Randomized Controlled Trial Purpose: To evaluate the outcome of using low dose aspirin for primary prevention in a population of elderly Japanese patents. Trial Design: Multicenter, randomized, blinded trial. 14,464 high-risk patients (HTN, DM, and/or elevated lipids). Median F/U = 5 years years. Randomized 1:1 to enteric coated aspirin 100 mg/day or no aspirin along with their regular medications. Mean age = 70.6 years. Primary Endpoint: cardiovascular death MI, stroke; non-fatal stroke or MI. Trial Results P value Low-dose aspirin 2.96% No aspirin 2.77% 0.544 Conclusions: Low-dose aspirin in this elderly population did not reduce atherosclerotic cardiovascular events.
