Tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to Jesus, but the
Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, “This man welcomes sinners
and eats with them.” So to them Jesus addressed this parable: “A man had two
sons, and the younger son said to his father, ‘Father give me the share of your
estate that should come to me.’ So the father divided the property between
them. After a few days, the younger son collected all his belongings and set off
to a distant country where he squandered his inheritance on a life of dissipation.
When he had freely spent everything, a severe famine struck that country, and
he found himself in dire need. So he hired himself out to one of the local citizens
who sent him to his farm to tend the swine. And he longed to eat his fill of the
pods on which the swine fed, but nobody gave him any. Coming to his senses he
thought, ‘How many of my father’s hired workers have more than enough food
to eat, but here am I, dying from hunger. I shall get up and go to my father and
I shall say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I no
longer deserve to be called your son; treat me as you would treat one of your
hired workers.”’ So he got up and went back to his father. While he was still a
long way off, his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion. He
ran to his son, embraced him and kissed him. His son said to him, ‘Father, I
have sinned against heaven and against you; I no longer deserve to be called
your son.’ But his father ordered his servants, ‘Quickly bring the finest robe
and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Take the
fattened calf and slaughter it. Then let us celebrate with a feast, because this son
of mine was dead, and has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.’
Then the celebration began. Now the older son had been out in the field and, on
his way back, as he neared the house, he heard the sound of music and dancing.
He called one of the servants and asked what this might mean. The servant said
to him, ‘Your brother has returned and your father has slaughtered the
fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’ He became angry, and
when he refused to enter the house, his father came out and pleaded with him.
He said to his father in reply, ‘Look, all these years I served you and not once
did I disobey your orders; yet you never gave me even a young goat to feast on
with my friends. But when your son returns who swallowed up your property
with prostitutes, for him you slaughter the fattened calf.’ He said to him, ‘My
son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours. But now we must
celebrate and rejoice, because your brother was dead and has come to life
again; he was lost and has been found.’
En aquel tiempo, solían acercarse a Jesús los publícanos y los pecadores a
escucharle. Y los fariseos y los escribas murmuraban entre ellos: Ése acoge
a los pecadores y come con ellos. Jesús les dijo esta parábola: “Un hombre
tenía dos hijos; el menos de ellos dijo a su padre: Padre, dame la parte que
me toca de la fortuna. El padre les repartió los bienes. No muchos días
después, el hijo menor, juntando todo lo suyo, emigró a un país lejano, y
allí derrochó su fortuna viviendo perdidamente. Cuando lo había gastado
todo, vino por aquella tierra un hambre terrible, y empezó él a pasar
necesidad. Fue entonces y tanto le insistió a un habitante de aquel país que
lo mandó a sus campos a guardar cerdos. Le entraban ganas de llenarse el
estómago de las algarrobas que comían los cerdos; y nadie le daba de
comer. Recapacitando entonces, se dijo: “Cuántos jornaleros de mi padre
tienen abundancia de pan, mientras yo aquí me muero de hambre. Me
pondré en camino adonde está mi padre, y le diré: Padre, he pecado contra
el cielo y contra ti; ya no merezco llamarme hijo tuyo: trátame como a uno
de tus jornaleros.” Se puso en camino a donde estaba su padre; cuando
todavía estaba lejos, su padre lo vio y se conmovió; y, echando a correr, se
le echó al cuello y se puso a besarlo. Su hijo le dijo: “Padre, he pecado
contra el cielo y contra ti; ya no merezco llamarme hijo tuyo. Pero el padre
dijo a sus criados: “Sacad en seguida el mejor traje y vestidlo; ponedle un
anillo en la mano y sandalias en los pies; traed el ternero cebado y matadlo;
celebremos un banquete, porque este hijo mío estaba muerto y ha revivido;
estaba perdido, y lo hemos encontrado. Y empezaron el banquete. Su hijo
mayor estaba en el campo. Cuando al volver se acercaba a la casa, oyó la
música y el baile, y llamando a uno de los mozos, le preguntó qué pasaba.
Este le contestó: “Ha vuelto tu hermano; y tu padre ha matado el ternero
cebado, porque lo ha recobrado con salud.” El se indignó y se negaba a
entrar; pero su padre salió e intentaba persuadirlo. Y el replicó a su padre:
“Mira: en tantos años como te sirvo, sin desobedecer nunca una orden
tuya, a mí nunca me has dado un cabrito para tener un banquete con mis
amigos; y cuando ha venido ese hijo tuyo que se ha comido tus bienes con
malas mujeres, le matas el ternero cebado. El padre le dijo: Hijo, tú
siempre estás conmigo, y todo lo mío es tuyo: deberías alegrarte, porque
este hermano tuyo estaba muerto y ha revivido; estaba perdido, y lo hemos
encontrado.”
Brief commentary
In this chapter, Jesus is criticized by the religious leaders who disagree
with his association with sinners and tax collectors. This opposition sets
the stage for the three parables known as the parables of mercy. These
parables are bound together by the joy of finding that which was lost, in
this case, sinners and outcasts. The third parable is probably the most
famous for its message and its beauty. The story is really about a father
whose love for his two sons breaks through all the customs of the time.
Under Jewish law the first-born son received a double share of the
inheritance (Deut 21:17). The younger son in this story is entitled to only a
third which he demands and then leaves. After calamity forces him to
return home, he is welcomed by his father with open arms and no regrets,
just the joy of having recovered his son. This familiar first part of the
story continues with a second event, the anger of the older son. The father
also goes out to this son who refuses to enter the house. He affirms the
young man’s faithfulness, but invites him to join in the joy of the brother
who was lost and has been found.
Today’s reading offers significant message:
God lovingly waits for us even before we decide to return home.
The older son is reminded that all that the father has is his.
Nothing has been taken away from him by welcoming his
brother back.
God’s prodigal forgiveness and love extends to all of us in a
personal way.
Comentario
En este capítulo de Lucas, los líderes religiosos critican a Jesús porque se
asocia con pecadores y cobradores de impuestos. Esta crítica sirve de
introducción a las tres parábolas que siguen, conocidas como las parábolas
de la misericordia. Lo que une las tres historias es la alegría que se
experimenta cuando encontramos lo que estaba perdido, en este caso, los
pecadores y los marginados. La tercera es la más famosa por su contenido y
su belleza literaria. En realidad, la historia no es sobre “el hijo pródigo”,
sino sobre el amor de un padre por sus dos hijos que rompe con todas las
costumbres de la época. De acuerdo a la Ley judía, el primogénito recibía el
doble de la herencia (Deut 21:17). En este caso, el hijo menor exigió de su
padre el tercio que le tocaba y se marchó lejos. Después de despilfarrar su
fortuna, la miseria forzó al joven a regresar a la casa paterna, donde fue
recibido por el padre con los brazos abiertos. No hay reproches, solamente
la alegría de haber recobrado lo que estaba perdido. La parábola continúa
narrando la reacción del hijo mayor que hasta se niega a entrar a la casa si
su hermano está allí. El padre sale también a buscar a este hijo y le
reafirma que todas sus riquezas son suyas, pero a la vez lo anima a que se
alegre con él porque su hermano ha sido encontrado.

Dios está siempre esperando por nosotros, aún antes de que decidamos
regresar.
lo que el padre posee le pertenece al hijo mayor, el cual no
pierde nada por recibir a su hermano en la casa.
Dios nos ofrece a cada uno su amor incondicional y pródigo.

Biblical Reflection 1 Cor 2:6-16
“No one can say ‘Jesus is Lord’ except by the Holy Spirit” (1 Cor 12:3). “God
has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’” (Gal 4:6).
This knowledge of faith is possible only in the Holy Spirit: to be in touch with
Christ, we must first have been touched by the Holy Spirit. He comes to meet
us and kindles faith in us. By virtue of our Baptism, the first sacrament of the
faith, the Holy Spirit in the Church communicates to us, intimately and
personally, the life that originates in the Father and is offered to us in the Son…
(CCC 683)
In the fullness of time the Holy Spirit completes in Mary all the preparations for
Christ’s coming among the People of God. By the action of the Holy Spirit in
her, the Father gives the world Emmanuel, “God with-us” (Mt 1:23). (CCC
744)
On the day of Pentecost when the seven weeks of Easter had come to an end,
Christ’s Passover is fulfilled in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, manifested,
given, and communicated as a divine person: of his fullness, Christ, the Lord,
pours out the Spirit in abundance. (CCC 731)
The mission of Christ and the Holy Spirit is brought to completion in the
Church, which is the Body of Christ and the Temple of the Holy Spirit. This
joint mission henceforth brings Christ’s faithful to share in his communion with
the Father in the Holy Spirit. The Spirit prepares men and goes out to them
with his grace, in order to draw them to Christ. The Spirit manifests the risen
Lord to them, recalls his word to them and opens their minds to the
understanding of his Death and Resurrection. He makes present the mystery of
Christ, supremely in the Eucharist, in order to reconcile them, to bring them into
communion with God, that they may “bear much fruit” (Jn 15:8, 16). (CCC
737)
… Baptism gives us the grace of new birth in God the Father, through his
Son, in the Holy Spirit. For those who bear God’s Spirit are led to the Word,
that is, to the Son, and the Son presents them to the Father, and the Father
confers incorruptibility on them. And it is impossible to see God’s Son
without the Spirit, and no one can approach the Father without the Son, for
the knowledge of the Father is the Son, and the knowledge of God’s Son is
obtained through the Holy Spirit. St. Irenaeus, Dem ap.7: SCh 62, 41-42.

Questions for discussion:
 Do you recall any occasion in which you felt the Holy Spirit
filling you with His strength?
 In which moments in the life of Jesus, you remember that the
Holy Spirit is manifest?
 In the letter to the Galatians, 5:22 says that the fruits of the Spirit
is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness,
gentleness, self-control. Thinking on people you know, have you
witness in any of them any of these fruits in them? Give some
examples.
 The Holy Spirit calls us to be holy ourselves, how could you be
holier… more saintly like?

Reflexión Bíblica: 1 Cor 2,6-16
“Nadie puede decir: ‘¡Jesús es Señor!’ sino por influjo del Espíritu
Santo” (1 Cor 12,3). “Dios ha enviado a nuestros corazones el Espíritu
de su Hijo que clama ¡Abbá, Padre!” (Ga 4,6). Este conocimiento de fe
no es posible sino en el Espíritu Santo. Para entrar en contacto con
Cristo, es necesario primeramente haber sido atraído por el Espíritu
Santo. El es quién nos precede y despierta en nosotros la fe. Mediante
el Bautismo, primer sacramento de la fe, la Vida, que tiene su fuente en
el Padre y se nos ofrece por el Hijo, se nos comunica íntima y
personalmente por el Espíritu Santo en la Iglesia… (CIC 683)
En la plenitud de los tiempos, el Espíritu Santo realiza en María todas las
preparaciones para la venida de Cristo al Pueblo de Dios. Mediante la
acción del Espíritu Santo en ella, el Padre da al mundo el Emmanuel,
“Dios con nosotros” (Mt 1,23). (CIC 744)
El día de Pentecostés (al término de las siete semanas pascuales), la
Pascua de Cristo se consuma con la efusión del Espíritu Santo que se
manifiesta, da y comunica como Persona divina: desde su plenitud.

La misión de Cristo y del Espíritu Santo se realiza en la Iglesia, Cuerpo
de Cristo y Templo del Espíritu Santo. Esta misión conjunta asocia
desde ahora a los fieles de Cristo en su Comunión con el Padre en el
Espíritu Santo: El Espíritu Santo prepara a los hombres, los previene por
su gracia, para atraerlos hacia Cristo. Les manifiesta al Señor resucitado,
les recuerda su palabra y abre su mente para entender su Muerte y
Resurrección. Les hace presente el Misterio de Cristo, sobre todo en la
Eucaristía para reconciliarlos, para conducirlos a la Comunión con Dios,
para que den “mucho fruto” (Jn 15,4.8.16). (CIC 737)
… El Bautismo nos da la gracia del nuevo nacimiento en Dios Padre por
medio de su Hijo en el Espíritu Santo. Porque los que son portadores del
Espíritu de Dios son conducidos al Verbo, es decir al Hijo; pero el Hijo
los presenta al Padre, y el Padre les concede la incorruptibilidad. Por
tanto, sin el Espíritu no es posible ver al Hijo de Dios, y, sin el Hijo,
nadie puede acercarse al Padre, porque el conocimiento del Padre es el
Hijo, y el conocimiento del Hijo de Dios se logra por el Espíritu

alegría, y paz, generosidad, afabilidad, bondad, y confianza,
mansedumbre y moderación. Al pensar en personas que tú
conoces, ¿has sido testigo de algunos de estos frutos en ellos?
Da algún ejemplo.
 El Espíritu Santo nos llama a la Santidad. ¿Cómo tú crees que
pudieras ser más santo?
