Dear Friends,
How often have you drawn a wrong conclusion about something? I have, many times. Sometimes, as the
saying goes, we solely judge a book by its cover. When I worked in Washington, I oftentimes would quickly
walk by a disheveled person who was begging on the sidewalk. Sometimes I would think: why doesn’t he get a
job? Then one day I thought to myself, but there for the grace of God go I! Perhaps he had tried to get a job. I was
judging without the evidence. Back then, securing employment was easier and mental health facilities were not
being closed as they seem to be today. The following, titled A DIFFERENT TYPE OF PRAYER, was sent to
me a few weeks ago. I’m looking at this differently than I did back in the early 70’s. I’ve changed-have you?
There are always two sides to every story.
“Heavenly Father,
Help us remember that jerk who cut us off in traffic last night is a single mother who worked nine
hours that day and was rushing home to cook dinner, help with homework, do the laundry and spend a few
precious moments with her children.
Help us to remember that the pierced, tattooed, disinterested young man who can’t make change
correctly is a worried 19-year-old college student, balancing his apprehension over final exams with his fear
of not getting his student loans for the next semester.
Remind us, Lord, that the scary looking bum, begging for money in the same spot every day is a slave
to addictions that we can only imagine in our worst nightmares.
Help us to remember that the old couple walking annoyingly slow through the store aisles and
blocking our shopping progress are savoring this moment, knowing that, based on the biopsy report she got
back last week, this will be the last year that they go shopping together.
Heavenly Father, remind us each day that, of all the gifts you give us, the greatest gift is love. It is not
enough to share that love with those we hold dear. Open our hearts not just to those who are close to us, but
to all humanity. Let us be slow to judgment and quick to forgiveness and patience and empathy and love.
Amen.
Have a nice week!

Those Who Speak To Us During The Mass….Part 1
A few years ago, Fr. John, a priest at Missionhurst in Arlington gave a homily at the morning Mass which referred to “those who speak to us during the Mass”. This brought to mind, all the people of our Catholic Tradition who do just that – they speak to us throughout the Liturgy. When Sunday Mass begins, we often hear the
words of greeting that St. Paul used in his many letters to the first Christians. When singing the words of the
Gloria, we are repeating the same words that were used by the angelic chorus when Christ lay as an infant in
the manger. Their words should be our words as we give honor and praise to our Creator. In the First Reading from Scripture, the Old Testament writer speaks to the Jewish people and also to us. While in the response to the Psalm,
we are the faithful praising God at all times, be they difficult or easy. We are quite familiar with the Apostles who wrote the
New Testament, as well as the Gospels. But as we listen carefully to the words being read, is there a message in them for
us? And are we open to hearing it? That perhaps is the better question. The Liturgy papers from the Second Vatican Council call for the priests to “unpack” the message, found in the Gospels. This is done to help us discover the presence of Christ
in our lives today. We are called to listen with open minds and hearts and then to act as Jesus would.
The Women of Nativity wish to extend their
heartfelt thanks to everyone who donated so
generously to the 2013 Christmas in August
School Supplies Collection. Through your generosity, we were able to send supplies to Martha’s
Table, Salvation Army, Arlington Refugee
Services, Carpenter’s Shelter, Lorton Community
Action Center, and ECHO.
The Nativity Girl Scout troops would like to
invite girls in kindergarten through 12th
grade to join our programs. Troops are
forming and/or accepting girls at most
program levels: Daisy (K-1st), Brownie
(2nd-3rd), Junior (4th-5th), Cadette (6th8th), Senior (9th-10th), and Ambassador
(11th-12th). Flyers are available at the back of the church in
the Scouting Folder on the bulletin board. Girl Scouts gives
girls opportunities to practice leadership, learn useful skills,
earn religious emblems, and provide service to the community in a great, Christ-centered environment. Find out how
much fun and value there is with scouting. Adult volunteers
are always needed and greatly appreciated – no experience
necessary. Free training is provided. Contact Becky Chaves at
703-425-4965 or e-mail [email protected] for more information.

My Mother said to me:
If you become a soldier you can become a general,
If you become a monk you end up a Pope,

PRO-LIFE CORNER
"The Gospel of Life is not for believers
alone: it is for everyone. The issue of
life and its defense and promotion is
not a concern of the Christian alone.
Although Faith provides special light
and strength, this question arises in
every human conscience which seeks the truth and which cares
about the future of humanity. Life certainly has a sacred and
religious value, but in no way is that value a concern only of
believers. The value at stake is one which every human being can
grasp by the light of reason; thus it necessarily concerns everyone."

A BIT OF HUMOR
There was a very gracious lady who was mailing an old
family Bible to her brother in another part of the country.
“Is there anything breakable in here?” asked the postal
clerk. “Only the Ten Commandments.” answered the
lady.
A student’s baptism certificate must be included with the
registration form, including students baptized at Nativity,
unless the certificate was previously submitted. Registration
forms are available in the Religious Education Office, on
the community board in the church vestibule, and at website: www.nativityburke.org; click on Religious Education;
then click on Student Registration.
Teachers and assistant teachers for the Religious Education
Program should attend the Orientation Meeting/
Workshop on Sunday, September 8, at 6:00pm in the
Parish Hall. This is a very important information meeting;
Nativity’s ESL (English as a Second Language) program is looking for a volunteer to
be the computer lab supervisor and facilitator during its Saturday morning classes,
from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, beginning September 14 or as soon after as possible. Responsibilities: one, to supervise our
students’ use of the Nativity School Computer Lab to ensure that
the equipment is used and maintained carefully and that the lab is
left in a clean and orderly condition at the close of classes; and two,
to assist students in learning and practicing basic computer literacy
skills, including email, virus protection, on-line learning (esp.
Rosetta Stone), Web search and word processing. The supervisor
should have sufficient knowledge of, and experience with, these
topics to be able to assist older learners from different cultural
backgrounds with their class assignments and individual projects. Knowledge of other languages is not necessary, but some
ability in Spanish would be helpful. To volunteer or for additional
information, please contact Bob Clark at 703-323-6717.

Last year Nativity Parishioners donated cookies to the Kairos Retreat Prison Ministry in Buckingham Men’s Correctional
Center. During one of the retreats, a man admitted that he “Came for the Cookies” and not to really to learn Jesus. It turned
out that he not only heard the gospel but was moved by it. Over the year he continued to participate in Kairos reunions,
joined a bible study, started mentoring other prisoners, and helped keep the younger ones on the right path in prison. Last
week he had an impulse to visit the prison psychologist and went over. As he approached the office he saw a new inmate
rushing the psychologist and assaulting her. He went in, pinned his arms, and dragged him into the hall and sat on his chest
until the Corrections Officers took over. The psychologist said she believed that her attacker was going to kill her and she
prayed someone would come to help. The man who “came for the cookies” replied, Jesus sent me.

CONTRACORRIENTE
J.Leoz
2.La fe, cuando se vive radicalmente, crea estos contrastes: adhesión e indiferencia; aplausos y reproches;
caminos abiertos y dificultades; reconocimiento y martirios.
hambre o del confort; de la vida o de las muertes;
mensaje.
¿Quieres saber si has predicado bien el evangelio?

ENAMORADO
Tú te has acercado,
has soplado sobre los rescoldos
de mi corazón,
y luz, calor, fuego y vida
han surgido gratis
inundando todo mi ser.
Derribaré cuanto se interponga
entre nosotros:
mis miedos, mis apegos, mis trampas,
mis seguridades, mis murallas,
mis pecados, mis conciertos,
mi insensatez...
y hasta mis pensamientos sobre ti.
Te dejaré entrar
hasta las alcobas más íntimas.
No te retendré en el umbral.
Despojado de todo,
excepto de mi deseo por ti,
te esperaré despierto,
arado,
desnudo,
limpio,
enamorado...
Sólo quiero la brisa de tu presencia
y el abrazo de tu amor.
Ulibarri, Fl.
Hebreos 11:1
POR HABER VIVIDO TODA mi vida en San Luis, Misuri,
he visto muchos juegos de béisbol.
Me encantó

NUESTRA VIDA.
públicamente nuestra adhesión a Ella.
