HISTORY OF SALVATION
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The first reading today continues the “history of
salvation” narrative that we hear throughout Lent this
year. Today’s story was among the best-loved in the
Jewish tradition (surely Joseph told the story to young
Jesus as he formed him in the ways of their faith); the
early fathers of the Church were very fond of it as a
means of explaining the sacrifice of Christ on the cross.
The overall tone of the first reading, psalm, and second
reading seems a little incongruous with the dazzling
Gospel, until we remember that the Transfiguration was
placed as the Gospel for this Sunday precisely to remind
us of the glory that awaits those who live faithfully and
obediently to the will of God. In the life of Jesus, it is a
preview of the glory of his resurrection; for us it is a
glimpse of the destiny of those who continue, as we heard
in last week’s Gospel, to repent and believe in the Good
News.
The basis of Abraham’s test in the first reading is the
fact that his neighbors followed a religious system that
demanded human sacrifice. In offering Isaac’s life on an
altar of sacrifice, he is following long-accustomed
religious practice. Ancient people accepted this because
they thought that life was an ever-renewing circle: what
had been lost would be restored in time. But here, God
springs this trap and gives Abraham, Isaac, and you and
me, a future. From now on, God will provide the
sacrifice. From this point on, our lives have a direction, a
purpose, a goal.
The faithful following of Lent and its consoling,
challenging scriptures strengthens and prepares us to
remember the Lord’s passion and resurrection. Today,
many parishes welcome home the elect, men and women
chosen on the First Sunday of Lent for the Easter
sacraments, from a celebration with the bishop. The
scriptures today are chosen with them in mind, to steady
their steps, to clear their vision, to strengthen their
resolve: “If God is for us, who can be against
us?” (Romans 8:31).

List do Rzymian 8,31b-34
Po sześciu dniach Jezus wziął z sobą Piotra, Jakuba i
Jana i zaprowadził ich samych osobno na górę wysoką.
Tam przemienił się wobec nich. Jego odzienie stało się
lśniąco białe tak, jak żaden folusznik na ziemi wybielić
nie zdoła. I ukazał się im Eliasz z Mojżeszem, którzy
rozmawiali z Jezusem. Wtedy Piotr rzekł do Jezusa:
Rabbi, dobrze, że tu jesteśmy; postawimy trzy namioty:
jeden dla Ciebie, jeden dla Mojżesza i jeden dla Eliasza.
Nie wiedział bowiem, co należy mówić, tak byli
przestraszeni. I zjawił się obłok, osłaniający ich, a z
obłoku odezwał się głos: To jest mój Syn umiłowany, Jego
słuchajcie. I zaraz potem, gdy się rozejrzeli, nikogo już
nie widzieli przy sobie, tylko samego Jezusa. A gdy
schodzili z góry, przykazał im, aby nikomu nie
rozpowiadali o tym, co widzieli, zanim Syn Człowieczy nie
powstanie z martwych. Zachowali to polecenie,
rozprawiając tylko między sobą, co znaczy powstać z
Marek 9,2-10
martwych.
REFLEKSJA NA TEMAT CZYTAŃ NIEDZELNYCH...
Przemienienie Jezusa jest zapowiedzią chwały Jego
zmartwychwstania, do której wszyscy jesteśmy
zaproszeni. W różnych sytuacjach naszego życia Bóg daje
nam zakosztować przedsmaku radości nieba, aby nas
podtrzymać w drodze. Droga do chwały prowadzi przez
krzyż, czyli przez ogołocenie z nas samych, z posiadania,
panowania i z przywiązań, nie pozwalających nam wydać
się w ręce Boga z dziecięcą ufnością. Zdołamy przejść tę
drogę, gdy będziemy patrzeć na Jezusa, który jako
pierwszy przeszedł ze śmierci do życia, i gdy będziemy

ISTORIA DE LA SALVACIÓN
La primera lectura de hoy continúa la “historia de la
salvación”, relato que oímos a lo largo de la Cuaresma de
este año. El relato de hoy era uno de los más queridos en
la tradición judía (seguramente José se lo contó al joven
Jesús cuando le enseñaba los caminos de la fe); a los
primeros padres de la Iglesia les gustaba usarlo para
explicar el sacrificio de Cristo en la cruz. El tono general
de la primera lectura, del salmo y la segunda lectura me
parece un poco fuera de lugar frente al Evangelio
deslumbrante, hasta que recordamos que la
Transfiguración se incluyó como el Evangelio de este
domingo, precisamente para recordarnos la gloria que les
espera a aquellos que son fieles y obedientes a la voluntad
de Dios. En la vida de Jesús, es un anticipo de la gloria de
su resurrección, para nosotros es una visión del destino de
aquellos que continúan, como hemos escuchado en el
Evangelio de la semana pasada, arrepintiéndose y
creyendo en la Buena Nueva.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
Durante la cuaresma es importante orar, pero muchas
personas se declaran ignorantes sobre el tema de la
oración. Dicen que nunca aprendieron a orar o que les
gustaría poder orar mejor. Tristemente, muchos tienen un
entendimiento equivocado sobre lo que es la oración.
Piensan que orar es solo recitar oraciones memorizadas o
esperan que la oración produzca visiones extraordinarias
como la transfiguración de Jesucristo en el monte Tabor.
Esperan que patriarcas y profetas, o por lo menos ángeles
y santos, se les aparezcan de repente.
No digo que estas cosas no pasan, muchas personas lo
han experimentado, algunos de ellos por ser muy santos
mientras otros mas por ser locos. Sinceramente la oración
es otra cosa, es más fácil que aprender oraciones de
memoria y mucho más simple que éxtasis y visiones. Orar
es hablar como hijo o hija al Dios que nos ama como
madre, padre, hermano, hermana, amante y amigo. Orar
es contarle al Señor como nos van las cosas, nuestros
temores, nuestros problemas, nuestros gozos y nuestros
anhelos. Orar es pasar tiempo con Dios, a veces
platicando, y a veces calladitos, pero siempre amados.
