There were no passports on floor! No handouts on floor! The families valued them.“ “One little kid kept asking for papitas (potato chips)! I told him, Later--let’s do the carnival. It was a very wholesome event.“ Pictured: Ramon Ozzie Perez , Tread Bike Shop In the middle of the carnival, to CHALKer Stephanie as she made her rounds with each table: “I’ve done a lot of events, but I have to say this is the best I’ve participated in. I can’t tell you how happy I am to see so much of our Latino community participating and tapping into the healthy resources our neighborhood offers. Look at the diversity here! Well done.“ Pictured: Tread Bike Shop holds up the grand prize to get kids excited. Rafael Gomez Luna, Venus Varieties “It could not have been better. Every demographic, every level was represented. People were getting a sense of value by being there. People were happy. My 8 year old daughter had a blast. At the end her perspective of what the event was about was helping people be better, “vive tu vida“. We hit a homerun with the event! People are asking what is next.“ Pictured: The Grand Raffle Drawing! Sigrid Collier, Student at The Institute of Human Nutrition: “I had a cute little kid ask: Can I do an activity? Rodger Ramallo, YM&YWHA of Washington Heights/Inwood: “Participating in the Vive tu Vida/Live your Life task force changed a lot for me. I reflected on my own eating habits and now I cut down on my soda. I feel that if I talk to people about these things I need to be an example.“ Pictured: Healthy fresh fruit snacks provided by La Pregunta Café Mayra Rivera: “My Post Carnival Epiphany : I started bicycling on Sunday! I didn’t know how to ride a bike and was hesitant to join. After being at the Carnival with Tread Bike Shop and Bike New York, I recruited guys to help me learn in my neighborhood! CHALK (Choosing Healthy & Active Lifestyles for Kids) VivetuVida/LiveyourLife | www.chalkcenter.org 8 When I entered carnival I was trying to find where I fit in. I learned I know more about nutrition than I thought. I noticed the efficiency of the carnival – they really got down table to table. Every table was its own unit and was engaging with a message of its own. Two particular tables struck me – the dairy: I didn’t know 1% and 2% had the same calcium. The other was the physical fitness – they gave out info on learning how to bicycle for free. I observed and later reflected on how the children were engrossed. I saw mothers standing behind their children with PRIDE! For a lot of them I think it was a sense of assimilation into American culture, the pride that ‘my son has made it, he’s American!’ Exponential excellence! It reminds me of the chalk burst logo reaching out.“ Pictured Left to Right: Father and child juggling with scarves. Bike New York and Tread Bike Shop teaching a child how to safely ride a bike. An energizing kick-off.“ “I have a couple of favorite stories, but here’s one that struck me: An older woman came up to me asking for a Vive tu Vida/Live your Life Passport. She didn’t have a child with her, so I said, okay but you’ll have to learn about each habit if I give you one. She exclaimed, ‘Yes! I want to visit each station! I want to live healthy!‘“ Daniel Neghassi, CHALKer and CU College of Physicians & Surgeons Medical Student: “At the station for habit #4 (Drink water instead of soda or juice), we demonstrated how much sugar are in various beverages. Parents and kids alike were surprised to see 17 teaspoons of sugar in a 20-once bottle of soda, but even more shocked to learn that a typical 16-ounce bottle of orange or apple juice has at least 10 teaspoons of sugar. What struck me the most was how interested and involved parents generally were about their family’s health and lifestyle: they asked questions, expressed concern about the sugar in juice and helped their younger kids understand the implications of the activity.” Pictured from top: Stephanie Pitsirilos-Boquín; Danny taking it all in; A child navigates an obstacle course by Get Focused, Inc.
