Who says healthy isn’t fun?
hat a Carnival!
490 community members “lived their life” at the Vive tu Vida/Live your Life
Carnival to kick off Washington Heights/Inwood’s campaign on childhood
obesity prevention! The Carnival took place on Saturday, March 6th 2010 from
12pm-3pm at Highbridge Recreation Center on 173rd Street Amsterdam Avenue,
New York. The event was sponsored by CHALK (Choosing Healthy & Active Lifestyles for
Kids), a childhood obesity prevention and healthy lifestyles program at NewYork-Presbyterian
Hospital/Columbia University Medical
Center, and the Vive tu Vida/Live your
Life task force, a coalition of community
organizations, artists, and
community leaders that are
The carnival kicked-off the start of a campaign rooted
in a community-made message: Vive tu Vida. Energia,
Balance, Acción./Live your Life. Energy, Balance, Action.
Families participated in engaging, educational, hands-on activities around “10 Healthy Habits”
provided by local resources in the neighborhood. Upon entering the Carnival, each child
received a “Vive tu Vida/Live your Life Passport” that was stamped at each
station when they completed a habit activity. By completing an activity,
families also entered themselves into exciting raffles that included:

What’s Next?
CHALK and the Vive tu Vida/Live your Life Task Force will take
its message to businesses, organizations and elected
officials to help build and promote healthy resources around
the 10 Healthy Habits throughout the neighborhoods of
Washington Heights/Inwood. To learn more about how to join
us, visit www.chalkcenter.org and click on “Live your Life”.
Families can join the Vive tu Vida/Live your Life campaign by
visiting our website www.chalkcenter.org for the latest events
and news around healthy living in Washington Heights/Inwood and for
information on the 10 Healthy Habits; signing up for our newsletter CHALK TALK; and participating
in kid-friendly CHALK organized events and events by those who have adopted the Vive tu Vida/
Live your Life message.
Look for the return of the Vive tu Vida/Live your Life Passport, Vive tu Vida/Live your Life
Bike tours and Fun at the Farmers’ Market as the weather gets warmer. And most importantly,
the best thing families can do to support the campaign and to celebrate on their own: “Live
your Life with the 10 Healthy Habits!” every single day.

Bob Braswell, People’s Theatre Project:
“The juggling kids had so much fun. Then adults joined towards end. Kids
learned quickly. Parents gave up easily, got embarrassed. The Vive tu
Vida/Live your Life Passport worked so well. Kids wanted to stay and do
everything. Great work CHALK!“

Ramon Toribio, Presencia y Raíces:
“When we were cleaning up at the end of the
carnival, I noticed the floor was not dirty. There
were no passports on floor! No handouts on
floor! The families valued them.“
“One little kid kept asking for papitas (potato
chips)! I told him, Later--let’s do the carnival. It
was a very wholesome event.“

In the middle of the carnival,
to CHALKer Stephanie as she
made her rounds with each
table:
“I’ve done a lot of
events, but I have to
say this is the best I’ve
participated in. I can’t
tell you how happy I
am to see so much of
our Latino community
participating and
tapping into the healthy
resources our neighborhood offers. Look at the diversity
here! Well done.“

Elinor King, Police Athletic League:
“It was talked about the next day
at the Coogan’s Run. Parents were
saying how they and their kids had a
great time.“
“The event was bilingual. It was clear that
Spanish was not an afterthought!“
“Parents did not just leave their kids. They
participated and reinforced the message.“

“Entering the carnival, you could feel the
palpable sense of energy happening.
People were getting a sense of value
by being there. People were happy.
My 8 year old daughter had a blast.
At the end her perspective of what the
event was about was helping people
be better, “vive tu vida“. We hit a
homerun with the event! People are asking
what is next.“

Carmen Acosta, Healthcare Education
Project, 1199SEIU UHWE/GNYHA
“A wonderful event that catered to
everyone’s needs. The Vive tu Vida/
Live your Life Passport was great. The
best part was seeing all that energy
there. Well organized. Very fun.“

Rodger Ramallo, YM&YWHA of
Washington Heights/Inwood:
“Participating in the Vive tu
Vida/Live your Life task force
changed a lot for me. I
reflected on my own eating
habits and now I cut down on
my soda. I feel that if I talk to
people about these things I
need to be an example.“

“My Post Carnival Epiphany : I started bicycling on Sunday! I didn’t know
how to ride a bike and was hesitant to join. After being at the Carnival with
Tread Bike Shop and Bike New York, I recruited guys to help me learn in my
neighborhood!

When I entered carnival I was trying to find where
I fit in. I learned I know more about nutrition than
I thought. I noticed the efficiency of the carnival
– they really got down table to table. Every
table was its own unit and was engaging with a
message of its own. Two particular tables struck
me – the dairy: I didn’t know 1% and 2% had the
same calcium. The other was the physical fitness –
they gave out info on learning how to bicycle for free.
I observed and later reflected on how the children
were engrossed. I saw mothers standing behind their
children with PRIDE! For a lot of them I think it was a
sense of assimilation into American culture, the pride
that ‘my son has made it, he’s American!’
Exponential excellence! It reminds me of the chalk
burst logo reaching out.“

Stephanie Pitsirilos-Boquin, CHALK Program Manager and Inwood Resident
“Well worth the year and half of work that the task force
put into in creating the message and developing a
strategy to mobilize around it. An energizing kick-off.“
“I have a couple of favorite stories, but here’s one
that struck me: An older woman came up to me
asking for a Vive tu Vida/Live your Life Passport. She
didn’t have a child with her, so I said, okay but you’ll
have to learn about each habit if I give you one. She
exclaimed, ‘Yes! I want to visit each station! I want to
live healthy!‘“
Daniel Neghassi, CHALKer
and CU College of Physicians &
Surgeons Medical Student:
“At the station for habit #4 (Drink water
instead of soda or juice), we demonstrated
how much sugar are in various beverages.
Parents and kids alike were surprised to see
17 teaspoons of sugar in a 20-once bottle
of soda, but even more shocked to learn
that a typical 16-ounce bottle of orange
or apple juice has at least 10 teaspoons
of sugar. What struck
me the most was how
interested and involved
parents generally were
about their family’s health
and lifestyle: they asked
questions, expressed
concern about the sugar in juice and helped their
younger kids understand the implications of the activity.” Pictured from top: Stephanie Pitsirilos-Boquín; Danny taking it all in;
