Gustavo Ignacio Gómez Message for Colombia’s Top IT Entrepreneur Award Ceremony Palabras premio ACIS Emprendedor Colombiano con TI Copyright © 2016 | Bizagi Gustavo Ignacio Gómez – palabras ACIS | 1 ENG Firstly, I would like to thank ACIS for this generous and unexpected award that I wished I could have collected personally. This recognition triggered a reflection process of the journey behind us and I would like to use this opportunity to share with aspiring entrepreneurs, in the most concise manner, the key success factors of our endeavour. I would like to begin with the process of starting a company: people are attracted to the idea that this is the consequence of a brilliant idea from a lonely genius, while in my opinion the entrepreneur’s focus should much rather be in identifying a group of partners with the integrity, energy and intelligence to accompany her/him in this tortuous and uncertain journey. A simple way to validate if the level of trust among this team is the appropriate is to ask yourself this question: “Would I leave these people with the responsibility of caring for my children if I was no longer here?” If the answer to this question is not a resounding YES, then you should reassess the founding team. Your idea, no matter how brilliant, has no chance of prospering in today’s environment without the appropriate team. In my personal case I was very fortunate in finding a fantastic group of partners together with whom I have faced innumerable challenges. We have suffered defeats, and celebrated victories. So after 30 years, more than at a personal level, I receive this award on their behalf. If you are thinking of starting your own company, first identify your weaknesses and compliment yourself with the right group of partners. Importantly, never forget that your first and foremost responsibility is to make sure that the company never runs out of cash. The strategy, the leadership, the product…all these critical aspects are secondary to your focus in keeping the liquidity of your enterprise. In second place, I would like to highlight one of the most difficult balances to keep in any new endeavour: the fine balance between determination and flexibility. Please allow me to elaborate more on this issue: if you are an entrepreneur it is very likely that you are somehow a strange, different person, as you have Copyright © 2016 | Bizagi Gustavo Ignacio Gómez – palabras ACIS | 2 identified an opportunity that either is not evident or is considered impossible by everyone else. Consequently, most people will tell you that your idea has no potential and that “if it were any good somebody would have already done it”. If you don’t have real grit and determination you will never overcome this challenge and you will not start your enterprise. If you do start your company and you surround yourself with the indispensable team required to succeed, in the processes of developing the company many of your initial assumptions will be proven wrong. The key question at this moment is if you and your team have the mental flexibility and mechanisms to identify these mistakes. My suggestion is that you actively and rigorously search for information that refutes your assumptions and if founded, act by re-adjusting your course. This is precisely the difference between being resolute and stubborn. When the organization starts growing and you start hiring your employees, identify very clearly if you need a leader or a manager to fill each position. This is a mistake I made repeatedly and it took me quite a while to identify that a leader has the capability to create new paths in a highly uncertain environment, while a manager runs an existing operation in a highly effective way. These are very different skills sets! Bear in mind that behind most success stories there is a long history (perhaps decades) of continuous effort. In these times of immediate gratification, the virtue of persistence is becoming rarer than ever. In my personal case, my persistence has been inspired by my family and I am fully aware that without the constant support, company, enthusiasm and joy of my wife Sarah and our children Simon, Lauren and Matthew, none of this would have been possible! I hope these words will contribute to the success of future generations of entrepreneurs. Thank you Gustavo Gomez. Mil gracias Gustavo Gomez. Copyright © 2016 | Bizagi
