SANTIAGO MORILLA
STATEMENT
Santiago Morilla expands on drawing through site-specific projects, understanding
aesthetic action as personal and performance decisions prompting the questioning and
analysis of the environment. After respectful immersion in the location where the
intervention is to take place, Morilla “hacks” the landscape and the representation of
the space, at times almost imperceptibly; simply a drawing that is formed for a few
instants when timelines collide, sometimes visible only from high above, sometimes
permanently reordering the meaning of a landscapeʼs elements, people or animals and,
on occasion, including specific materials that expand local narratives. Artistically, his
work inhabits space in order to highlight its limits and the way in which man draws his
decisions while tending to dehumanise himself and disappear on the path of fate,
pathos and repetition. He combines his huge, public, multi-layered (video, specific
drawing, mural painting, aerial photography) interventions, incorporating “graphic
bombs” into the process through “warnings to navigators” that question the political
function of digital mapmaking and invite us to reflect on environmental “pollution” and
relational isolation.
For Santiago Morilla, if artistic investigation does not involve personal action outside
the studio and his “comfort zone”, it does not make sense. His work has evolved from
urban art and illustration to a living immersion in specific projects with keywords open
to narratives of deceleration, where tradition and technology find a place of aesthetic
resistance.

TITLE: “SPAIN PONG” © 2014 Santiago Morilla
“SPAIN-PONG” is a video performance carried out with a racquet and hundreds of ping pong balls against
a wall. As the outline of Spain is built up, there are several “rebounds” and “quirks” in the geographic and
territorial game. Where the ball has hit the wall- following a recognisable outline- is where it is finally fixed.

TITLE: “I SEE NOTHING” © 2015 Santiago Morilla
"I see nothing" (No veo nada) were the last words uttered by the famous bullfighter Manolete before
bleeding to death at Linares arena (1947). A drawing in whitewash reveals the impassive face of Manolete
at the arena. Dilettantes and other aficionados jump and stumble erasing its image, until its completely
disfigured in the real and symbolic setting of a double death, of the Manolete and of the animal.

TITLE: “INVISIBLE BATH” © 2014 Santiago Morilla
A specific intervention project in the reservoir at Alaró (Mallorca). The lower limbs, made with polystyrene
foam tubes, form an infinite drawing that “hacks the landscape”, gently rocking on the surface of the water
and filtering the irrigation of the nearby fields.

TITLE: “DRAWING FUCK-YOU IN KOREAN LANGUAGE” 2013 Santiago Morilla
Video in which the English expression “fuck you” is created typographically in Hangul, the Korean
alphabet, using several graphs displaying the growth of the main Korean companies, which we could see
as a master class through the origami tradition from East to West.

Temporary, site-specific, collaborative performance intervention in Soledad Torres Díaz de Acosta Square,
Madrid, during the Noche en Blanco (White Night) cultural festival. The symbol of Madrid, the “bear”, is
taken as a parasitic idea, reclining in its cement tomb, reclaiming another use for the capitalʼs squares.

TITLE: “MANUAL OF EQUINE ORTHOGRAPHY” April 2014 ©Santiago Morilla
Specific and performance intervention in the hippodrome in Manacor, Mallorca. Drawing created with
wheels and horses on clay with plaster and marbline. Some eyes, a nose, some eyebrows in the
foreground, on which the horses literally trot, erasing and destroying its gaze. The intercession of the
wheels and hoof prints set out a new and indirect drawing, risky and unpredictable, that it constructs by
destroying the previous purpose.

food, sheep and timeline occurs and disappears in a repetitive loop.

Taking on the GCC museum space (S. Korea) as if it were a swimming pool where one can enjoy bathing
or simply ʻplay deadʼ and leave just oneʼs head to float, supported by a shamanic float. This is up to our
necks in wáter: art interventions that are also anamorphosic rice drawings that show the outlines of those
anonymous people who drowned in Daebudo-do island and whom the sea has left partially afloat.

TITLE: “THE ACCIDENT OF PAINTING” June 2010 © Santiago Morilla
Permanent site-specific intervention on the roof of the Royal Spanish Academy in Rome. The “accident”
speaks to the impossibility of preaching to birds, of the arrogant and absurd human purpose, with its
inevitable reversal of the fall... in an emblematic place in Rome where tribute is paid to St. Francis of Assisi
and where Christian tradition has it that St. Peter was crucified upside-down.

Site-specific and performance aerial intervention in Montopoli, Italia. Drawing in lime on a football pitch.
The players will distort the face of a local referee (who just happens to look a lot like Hitler), without paying
attention to its ever-changing shapes and limits, creating a monstrous and infinite portrait.
