From the Pastor’s Laptop
“ Misericordiae Vultus: Face of mercy”
Father Mark Wagner
In two days we will
officially begin the “Year
of Mercy!” Pope Francis
will open the “Holy Door”
of St. Peter’s Basilica
which represents the fact
that all are welcome to
enter God’s Church and
receive mercy. Pope Francis chose to
begin this special Jubilee Year on
December 8, which is a feast of Mary
who is the “Mother of Mercy”. She is the
Mother of the One who is the source of
mercy and mercy Himself.
Pope Francis wrote a document to
explain the Year of Mercy. It is called
“Misercordiae Vultus” , which means
“Face of Mercy”. The first line of the
document read: “Jesus Christ is the face
of the Father’s mercy.”
But WE are also supposed to be “the
face” of the mercy of God for the people
of Modesto. In a document Pope
Francis also said: “It is my burning desire
that, during this Jubilee, the Christian
people may reflect on the corporal and
spiritual works of mercy.” At St. Joseph’s
we will dedicate each month of this
Jubilee Year to one or two of the
traditional “works of mercy.”
For
example, during the month of December
we will think about “Feed the Hungry”
and “Give drink to the thirsty.” During
the chilly month of January we will focus
on “Clothe the naked.”
It is appropriate that in December we
reflect on the fact that as a parish we
distribute Christmas baskets of food to
the needy and we try to help the poor
and the needy in many ways. We try to
satiate those who are “thirsty” for our
love and our kindness.
We are now in the time of Advent
and we hear in today’s Gospel about
John the Baptist, who is fasting in the
desert. The story of Christ begins in the
desert, a place where there is no food
and no water. But we are preparing the
way for the One who provides us with
“Bread from Heaven” and “Living Water”!

Healthy Tips from our
St. Joseph’s Health Ministry
Antibiotics can cure bacterial
infections, but not viral infections.
The common cold and flu are viral
infections. Using antibiotics when
they are not needed causes some
bacteria to become resistant to
antibiotics, and are harder to kill.
Talk to your doctor about the
need for antibiotics.

These Stewardship Profiles are
normally dedicated to lay stewards,
but sometimes we dedicate them to
our clergy, as we did when Fr. Illo
left St. Joseph’s.
We are all “called” to answer His call
and serve as we are able. Fr. Edwin
answered the call to help at St.
Joseph’s when we were in great
need of an additional Associate
Pastor. He soon charmed us with his
quick wit, good humor and excellent
dedication to his priesthood and
parish tasks. His smiling
countenance was something our
parishioners came to look forward to
at each Mass he served, and as he
joined parish activities. He became
very beloved for the tenderness with
which he cared for those who were
suffering, especially when serving
during a funeral Mass. When
Modesto had an unexpected
vacancy for the Hospital Chaplain,
our Bishop asked Fr. Edwin to fill
this role. On October 14, Fr. Edwin
began this new assignment, and is
in residence at Holy Family Parish in
Modesto. True to his servant’s heart,
he still helped us with Mass
coverage during Fr. Francis’
vacation.
We are thankful for this
holy man and for those,
like him, answer the call
to serve. We will miss
you, Fr. Edwin!

DEL LAPTOP DEL PÁRROCO, Padre Mark
www.vatican.com
Padre Mark Wagner
¡En dos días, comenzamos
oficialmente “El Año de la
Misericordia”! El Papa Francisco abrirá
la “Puerta Santa” de la Basílica de San
Pedro, lo cual representa que todos
están bienvenidos para entrar en la
Iglesia de Dios y recibir su
misericordia.
El Papa Francisco
escogió comenzar este Año de
Jubileo el 8 de diciembre, la fiesta de
María quien es la “Madre de la
Misericordia”. Ella es la Madre de
aquel quien es la fuente de
misericordia y es la misma
misericordia.
El Papa Francisco escribió un
documento para explicar el Año de la
Misericordia. Se llama “Misercordiae
Vultus”, lo cual significa “Cara de
Misericordia”. La primera línea del
documento dice: “Jesucristo es la cara
de la misericordia del Padre.”
Pero, se supone que NOSOTROS
somos “la cara” de la misericordia de
Dios para el pueblo de Modesto. En
el documento, el Papa Francisco
también dice: “Es mi ardiente deseo
que, durante este Jubileo, el pueblo
cristiano se reflejará sobre las obras
corporales y espirituales de la
misericordia.” En St. Joseph’s, vamos a
dedicar cada mes de este Año de
Jubileo a uno o dos de las
tradicionales “obras de
misericordia.” Por ejemplo, durante el
mes de diciembre, pensaremos en
“Dar de comer al hambriento” y “Dar
de beber al sediento.” Durante el mes
frío de enero, nos enfocaremos en
“Vestir al desnudo.”
Es apropiado que en diciembre,
nos reflejamos sobre el hecho que,
como parroquia, distribuimos
canastas navideñas de comida a los
necesitados y tratamos de ayudar a
los
pobres
en
varias
maneras.
Tratamos de saciar a
aquellos “sedientos” por nuestro amor
y nuestra benevolencia.
Ya estamos en el tiempo de
Adviento, y escuchamos en el
Evangelio de hoy sobre Juan el
Bautista, quien está ayunando en el
desierto.
La historia de Cristo
comienza en el desierto, un lugar
donde no hay comida ni agua. Pero,
¡nos estamos preparando el camino
para Aquel que nos provee “Pan del
Cielo” y “Agua Viva”!

Estos Perfiles de la
Corresponsabilidad están
normalmente dedicados a
corresponsales laicos, pero a veces
los dedicamos a nuestro clero,
como hicimos cuando se fue de St.
Joseph’s el Padre Illo.
Todos estamos “llamados” a
responder Su llamada y de servir
como nos es posible. El Padre
Edwin respondió la llamada de
ayudar en St. Joseph’s cuando
teníamos mucha necesidad de un
Pastor Asociado adicional. Pronto
nos cautivó con su ingenuidad, su
buen humor, y su dedicación
excelente a su sacerdocio y las
responsabilidades
parroquiales. Su rostro sonriente
fue algo que los feligreses
añoraban en cada Misa en que
servía y en las actividades
parroquiales. Se encariñó por su
suavidad con cual cuidaba a
aquellos que estaban sufriendo,
especialmente al servir en una
Misa fúnebre. Cuando Modesto
tenía una vacancia inesperada
para un Capellán para los
hospitales, nuestro obispo le pidió
al Padre Edwin que sirviera en esa
capacidad. El 14 de octubre, el
Padre Edwin comenzó esa labor, y
está ahora viviendo en la
Parroquia de Sagrada Familia aquí
en Modesto. Fiel a su corazón de
servidor, todavía ayuda aquí en
las misas durante la semana
durante las vacaciones del Padre
Francis. Estamos muy
agradecidos por este hombre santo
y por aquellos como él que
responden la llamada a servir.
¡Te extrañaremos, Padre
Edwin!
