Pope Francis chose to begin this special Jubilee Year on December 8, which is a feast of Mary who is the “Mother of Mercy”. She is the Mother of the One who is the source of mercy and mercy Himself. Pope Francis wrote a document to explain the Year of Mercy. It is called “Misercordiae Vultus” , which means “Face of Mercy”. The first line of the document read: “Jesus Christ is the face of the Father’s mercy.” But WE are also supposed to be “the face” of the mercy of God for the people of Modesto. In a document Pope Francis also said: “It is my burning desire that, during this Jubilee, the Christian people may reflect on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy.” At St. Joseph’s we will dedicate each month of this Jubilee Year to one or two of the traditional “works of mercy.” For example, during the month of December we will think about “Feed the Hungry” and “Give drink to the thirsty.” During the chilly month of January we will focus on “Clothe the naked.” It is appropriate that in December we reflect on the fact that as a parish we distribute Christmas baskets of food to the needy and we try to help the poor and the needy in many ways. We try to satiate those who are “thirsty” for our love and our kindness. We are now in the time of Advent and we hear in today’s Gospel about John the Baptist, who is fasting in the desert. The story of Christ begins in the desert, a place where there is no food and no water. But we are preparing the way for the One who provides us with “Bread from Heaven” and “Living Water”! Healthy Tips from our St. Joseph’s Health Ministry Antibiotics can cure bacterial infections, but not viral infections. The common cold and flu are viral infections. Using antibiotics when they are not needed causes some bacteria to become resistant to antibiotics, and are harder to kill. Talk to your doctor about the need for antibiotics. Youth Ministry Center for Lay Apostolates Profiles in Stewardship By Tammy Menezes FOCUS ON LEADERSHIP: Plaza Refreshments are served today by volunteers from our Plaza Refreshment Volunteers. Parish Stewardship — a way of life Family Promise Ministry—St. Joseph’s We are a part of our local (13) church network. We are thankful for all of our St. Joseph’s Family Promise lay apostolates whose gifts of service make this happen! Want to help? Call 551-4973, ext. 202 New to the Parish? Wondering where to start?? Call the Center for Lay Apostolates 551-4973, ext. 202 Fr. Edwin These Stewardship Profiles are normally dedicated to lay stewards, but sometimes we dedicate them to our clergy, as we did when Fr. Illo left St. Joseph’s. We are all “called” to answer His call and serve as we are able. Fr. Edwin answered the call to help at St. Joseph’s when we were in great need of an additional Associate Pastor. He soon charmed us with his quick wit, good humor and excellent dedication to his priesthood and parish tasks. His smiling countenance was something our parishioners came to look forward to at each Mass he served, and as he joined parish activities. He became very beloved for the tenderness with which he cared for those who were suffering, especially when serving during a funeral Mass. When Modesto had an unexpected vacancy for the Hospital Chaplain, our Bishop asked Fr. Edwin to fill this role. On October 14, Fr. Edwin began this new assignment, and is in residence at Holy Family Parish in Modesto. True to his servant’s heart, he still helped us with Mass coverage during Fr. Francis’ vacation. We are thankful for this holy man and for those, like him, answer the call to serve. We will miss you, Fr. Edwin!
