Statement by the Most Reverend Richard J.
Garcia, Bishop of the Diocese of Monterey.
Declaración del Sr. Obispo Ricardo J. Garcia,
Obispo de la Diócesis de Monterey.
While the United States Supreme Court
may have redefined the civil definition of
marriage, the Church has always taught
and continues to teach that marriage is a
sacramental union between a man and a
woman. This definition remains unchanged within the Catholic Church despite the ruling by the Supreme Court.
At the same time it is important to note
that the Church’s definition of marriage
does not demean anyone. The Church
teaches that all humankind is created in the image
and likeness of God, himself. This includes every
human being whether man, woman, gay, straight, African, Hispanic, Asian or Anglo-everyone possesses
this human dignity. We as Catholic Christians are
called to love our neighbor as ourselves and to see
the face of Jesus in everyone.
insulte a nadie.
sea hombre mujer, gay, o no, Africanos, Hispanos,
humano.
Regarding marriage, the Catechism of the Catholic
Church teaches, “The intimate community of life and
love which constitutes the married state has been established by the Creator and endowed by him with its
own proper laws…. God himself is the author of marriage. The vocation to marriage is written in the very
nature of man and woman as they came from the
hand of the creator. Marriage is not a purely human
institution despite the many variations it may have
undergone through the centuries in different cultures,
social structures, and spiritual attitudes.”
The catechism has anticipated a change in the way
marriage is defined- however, the Church’s definition
remains unchanged.
As Archbishop Joseph Kutz, President of the united
States Conference of Catholic Bishops said so well,
“I call upon all people of good will to join [the church]
in proclaiming the goodness, truth and beauty of
marriage as rightly understood for the millennia, and I
ask all in positions of power and authority to respect
the God-given freedom to seek, live by and bear witness to the truth”
Como Arzobispo Joseph Kurtz, Presidente de la
Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de los Estados
Unidos dice tan bien.
Religious freedom provides all of us with the right to
the “free exercise” of our religious beliefs. As Catholics we have the right to live out our lives in the light
of what we firmly believe. This allows us to continue
to believe in and to teach the truth of marriage as a
union between a man and woman.
mujer.
