Let your child show off his or her Beye knowledge in the annual school scavenger
hunt! Teams of students will hunt high and low to find clues and be the first to
decipher the hidden code. We will then gather in the commons for dinner.

Code Play Learn is excited to offer two Beye-In parties for K-2nd graders and 3rd-5th
graders. Participants will construct their own Lego robots and then using the WEDO
programming platform, we make their creations come alive.
Parents of kindergarteners should plan to stay to assist. 1st and 2nd parents are
welcome and encouraged to stay.

Experience a tour and tasting at Oak Park's newest brewery, Kinslahger Brewing
Company. This event will include tastings of Kinslahger's flagship beers: Prohibition
Pilsner, Dunkel, Alt, Chicago Common, and Baltic Porter. Then choose your favorite
beer and stick around to socialize with fellow Beye parents. Light snacks and a
souvenir glass will be included.

shown all the thrills and spills of roller skating a la roller derby – without the hitting
or impact! Have fun while enjoying the company of crazy women like yourself!
Bring a helmet and water bottle: all other equipment will be provided.

are. No music experience necessary. Instruments provided, or bring your own!

Murder Mystery Party
April 23, 7 ‘til the case is solved!
Come join us at a local neighborhood speakeasy for a night of mystery during the
height of the roaring 20s. Get ready for blackmail, deceit, debauchery, intertwining
relationships, murder and a special appearance from a well known guest. You’ll
enjoy live piano music, local bartenders, free flowing libations, light fare catered by
Blue Plate Chicago and prizes for the detective who solves the case.
Dress for the 20s if you wish, but we’ll have period props (think boas, headdresses
and fedoras) for anyone who’d rather come unadorned. Take a starring role or
simply be a bystander. It’ll be the cat’s pajamas!

June 4, 7pm
2016 is the year of the Olympics! What better way to show your support of the ol’
Red, White, and Blue than by joining us at Oak Park Beer Olympics 2016! For the
first time ever, Beye and Whittier will join forces for a Beye-In party: Two schools,
double the fun! Hosted by the Whittier and Beye parents the Sorgs, Ryans, and
Steketees on June 4th, this epic multi-school competition will appeal to all of your
competitive instincts.
Food from around the world. Olympic caliber selection of adult beverages, including
the first samples of the well-crafted beers coming to the new Lake Street and Austin
brewery. Currently being reviewed by the Olympic committee: Podium celebrations;
Gold, Silver, and Bronze stuff. DJs spinning dance-inspiring tunes ‘til the wee hours
of the morning—most certainly. Events for all!

May 14, 1-6pm
Solve the riddle, get the clue, find the cache. Treasure awaits you! Join us for an
afternoon of outdoor, high tech treasure hunting fun using GPS coordinates and your
wits. Walk, run or scoot your way around Oak Park (be sure to wear your
helmet!). The party will begin and end at the Readling home where a
post-geocaching cookout will follow.

Summer Adventures Camp with Beye Discovery
Join us for a thrilling start to the summer as we venture into “Playful Art & The Art of Play”,
inspired by artists both past and present; the natural world; and our own experiences, interests
and dreams. Through painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture, children will develop their skills
and imagination to create unique works of art. Weather permitting, some projects will be created
outdoors. Classes are facilitated by Jocelyne Adkins, MAAE, School of the Art Institute, Chicago
and a teaching assistant.
Beye Discovery Camp Schedule (For children grades K-5, half day & full day options):
Students may register for 1 week, 2 weeks, or 3 weeks. Each week will offer new adventures!

Morning Sessions: 8:30am - 11:30am ($125 per week)

*Extended day option from 3:30-6pm: Session fee + $80 per week
Please note, minimum enrollment is 4 children. Should this minimum not be met, caregivers will be

We are again offering dental screening and sealants in partnership with the IWS
Children’s Clinic. Beye Elementary School was chosen to take part in this
project, which provides free dental exams and sealant placement.
You will receive a copy of your child’s dental exam after he/she is seen.
If you wish for your child to participate please take a few minutes to read this
letter, complete the consent form on the back of this sheet and return it to your
child’s teacher by Wednesday March 23rd 2016
Screening will take place on: April 7th and 8th 2016
Q&A
Q: What are dental sealants?
A: Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings that are put onto the chewing
surfaces of the back teeth. Sealants are painted on the top of the back teeth
and harden to form a protective shield over the tooth.
Q: Does it hurt to have sealants put on teeth?
A: No, getting sealants is painless. Right after placement, normal activities are
fine.
Q: How long will sealants last?
A: Sealants can last five to ten years if they are done right and teeth are
properly cared for after placement.
Q: How do sealants prevent cavities?
A: Dental sealants fill the pits and grooves of the teeth. The teeth are easier to
keep clean because the food is easier to brush off with your toothbrush.
Q: Is brushing still important when teeth have sealants on them?
A: Yes, brush and floss every day!

Dear families,
Oak Park and Beye School are greatly enriched by the multicultural and multilingual diversity
of our families. Our families come from all over the world and speak many different
languages. We invite you to help us grow as a community in our knowledge, understanding
and appreciation of our diversity, here is how:
- Discuss the language(s) people in your family speak.
- Talk about why knowing more than one language is important for getting a job,
traveling the world and making your brain stronger.
- Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 7th and participate in District 97’s 36th annual
Ethnic Festival and World Language Day at Julian Middle School. Dress in your cultural
heritage clothing and join us there. Enjoy performances, hands on activities and
vendors representing various cultures.
This is what we have been learning during the last weeks:
Kindergarten:
Students learned about foods, especially frutas. We read La oruga muy hambrienta.
1st grade:
Students learned to describe their daily routines. We also talked about food and activities
that keep us healthy. They learned the parts of the body and how to say if something hurts in
case they need to see a doctor.
2nd grade:
Second graders learned how to describe themselves and others both physically and their
personalities. They described friends, members of the family etc, as well as the place where
they live.
3rd grade:
Students in 3rd grade also reviewed in more detail how to describe themselves and others:
physically, by personality and by what they are wearing. They learned a lot about clothes
and we even had our very own fashion show!
4th grade:
The students “packed” a suitcase with clothes and things they need to travel to a Spanish
speaking country. Students are in the process of finishing up the story they wrote about Nico,
our class pet.
5th grade:
5th graders reviewed what they would need to travel to a Spanish speaking country: clothes,
documents etc. and what activities they could do according to where exactly they are
going: the beach, the mountain, the jungle etc. Ask them about their Nico story!
As I have mentioned before it is recommended that they practice Spanish at home
according to these recommendations:
ü 3rd graders: a minimum of 30 minutes a week or 3-4 lessons
ü 4th graders: 40 minutes a week or 4-5 lesson
ü 5th graders: 50 minutes a week or 5-6 lessons a week.
This time should be broken down into increments of 10-15 minutes to increase exposure to
the language on a more consistent basis. The chart monitoring your student’s progress will be
sent home at the end of the year.
