MASS TIMES Page 2
December 26, 2010 - The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph
A Message of Thanks
Normally we think of the month of
November as the month to give “Thanks”
for our blessings and events which happen
in our lives. Of course, giving thanks is
not limited to one month or even one day
of the year. We should always have a
thankful heart and also give God thanks
each day for the many blessings that we
enjoy in our lives.
In November, at our Thanksgiving Day
Mass, we came together as a faith
community and were able to give thanks
for all our blessings – personal ones and
community ones. One community thank
you that we were able to celebrate together was the presentation,
blessing, and consecration of the new liturgical vessels which were
purchased by the Saint Lawrence Community and have been used in
our Mass celebrations since that special Thanksgiving Day Mass.
Several donors and representatives of the different parish groups who
donated to the new vessels project presented the vessels on behalf of
the whole Community. Many comments have been made on the beauty
of the vessels. This would not have been made possible without the
many generous contributions from different members and groups of our
parish community. “Thank you” to all!
In the liturgical life of Saint Lawrence Parish, there are many reasons to
give thanks throughout the year to the many individuals who help make
our liturgical life, such as Masses, devotions, and other special services
happen.
Queridos Feligreses, Padres y Amigos,
bendiciones recibidas – personales y comunitarias.
especiales.
As we end this calendar year, I want to say ‘thank you’ to all the liturgical
ministers who have a part in making things happen so smoothly so that
everyone in the parish may prayerfully participate and enjoy our liturgical
celebrations. You can see some (not all) of the liturgical ministries and
their coordinators listed on our Parish ministry listing, which is normally
on the front of the weekly bulletin. Behind each liturgical ministry is a
group of many dedicated parishioners who make up the different teams
and who give of their time each week or each month throughout the
year. Did you know that we have a ministry group of several individuals
who rotate doing the laundry of the linens used at Mass and the dirty
Altar Server robes? This is just one of several ‘behind the scenes’ type
of liturgical ministries.
A group of individuals that I want to give a big personal and public ‘thank
you’ to is all our music ministers. Over the last year, they have
continued to help us pray and worship with beautiful music each and
every week, even without a parish music coordinator. Our different
choirs and musicians have continued to give of their own time for
practices, and have shared their God-given talents with us by singing at
the different Masses.
There is a special group of individuals who have worked together as the
music committee, choir coordinators, and accompanists, and have
volunteered numerous extra hours keeping the music ministry alive here
at our parish. Over the last year they have selected the music,
coordinated practices, made music slides, and have led the choirs just to
name a few of their tasks. These special individuals are Eileen Duenas,
Elaine Ketell, Sara Jackson, Roseann Zimbauer, Evelyn Antonio, Terry
Jelley, Nora Ngo, Juan Hernandez, Emmy Gandeza, Therie Velasco,
Minnie, Fe Dizon, and Mona Anonuevo. A big THANK YOU to each of
you!
Let us always give thanks to God for all the volunteers that give of their
time here at Saint Lawrence the Martyr Parish and Education Center.
In Christ,
Fr. Ernesto Orci
Parochial Vicar and Director of Liturgy
Eileen Duenas, Elaine Ketell, Sara Jackson, Roseann Zimbauer, Evelyn
Antonio, Terry Jelley, Nora Ngo, Juan Hernández, Emmy Gandeza,
Therie Velasco, Minnie, Fe Dizon, y Mona Anonuevo. ¡Muchas GRACIAS

Mass for Victims/Survivors of Violence
Violence hits all communities, all income and age groups, and
it also tests our faith. We have a responsibility to respond.
Please help us reach out to those individuals and families who
have experienced the pain and hurt of losing a loved one
through a violent act. The Catholic community cannot ignore
the moral and human costs of so much violence in our midst.
A Special Mass for Victims/Survivors of Violence
will be held on Sunday, April 10, 2011 at 2:30 PM
at Queen of Apostles Church
4911 Moorpark, San Jose, CA.
Bishop Patrick J. McGrath will be the presider.
This will be a way for all who have been touched by violence
to gather in prayer and remembrance.
If you would like a specific victim/survivor of violence
to be remembered by name in this liturgy,
please send the name to Sister Maryann Cantlon,
1150 North 1st Street, San Jose, CA 95110.
All are invited to the reception after the Mass.

(taken from The Little Blue book of Reflections on Advent)
In today’s gospel we
hear
Matthew’s
account
of
what
happened after the
Magi
departed.
Joseph
again
receives information
from an angel in a
dream, “Rise, take
child and his mother,
flee to Egypt, and
stay there until I tell
you. Herod is going
to search for the child
to destroy him.”
It seems a strange
phrase: “Search for
the child to destroy
him.” Matthew is giving us a preview of the Passion
when exactly the same word is used: The chief
priest and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask
for Barabbas but to destroy Jesus.
There is a tone of haste in the angel’s message to
Joseph.
He had to hurry to escape Herod’s
search-and-destroy mission. Just honored with
gifts, Jesus is about to be humiliated by flight.
The Holy Family heads for Egypt. It was outside
Herod’s jurisdiction, and a frequent haven for Jewish
people fleeing his disfavor.
Joseph is back in a familiar role: He is told what has
to be done, and he does it. The whole future is not
revealed to him, just what has to be done now.
We might muse…”I wish I had an angel to tell me
exactly what to do. I’d do it to the letter.”
Well, maybe. On the other hand…there are times
when we know exactly what we ought to do and
then we don’t do it. Maybe we should talk to Joseph
about that.
Lully, lullay, Thou little tiny Child,
Bye, bye, lully, lullay.
“Coventry Carol is a 16th-century carol,
commemorating Matthew’s account of the tragic
slaughter of innocent infant boys during the time of
King Herod. The song was originally featured in
“The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors,” a
religions drama based on the biblical story
beginning with the Annunciation and ending with the
massacre of the baby boys. The carol is the
sorrowful lament of a mother trying to lull her baby
to “be still” so that Herod’s soldiers will not find and
kill him.
These religious dramas were called
“mystery plays”, and were particularly popular during
the Middle Ages. “Coventry Carol” is named after
the English village where the mystery play was
performed. December 28th is the Feast of the Holy

The Elementary Christmas Concert, held December 7th,
was a festive occasion. Grades Pre-K to 5 sang a variety
of Christmas songs led by Diane Mayper, the music
instructor from West Bay Music Academy, who works
with the elementary students once a week. Principal
Phil Dolan called the performance “Fantastic!” and was
amazed at the talent of the students. Below are some
moments from the evening along with some
impressions of teachers, guests and students.
“The children were so beautiful, all dressed up.”
“It gets better every year!”
“Mrs. Mayper did a terrific job!”
“I was surprised by the variety of songs
and the difficulty level.”
“I finally got to play the recorder.”
“It was great that all the grades from
Pre-K to 5 watched each other perform.”
“The music was great.”

In the beginning of 2010, Saint
Lawrence hosted a very
successful blood drive. As a
parish, we helped to save a
multitude of lives. Let’s make this
blood drive just as successful.
I encourage everyone to come out to
this blood drive and help make a
difference. Please invite all of your
friends and family to this event.
Donating at a blood drive along with
your fellow parishioners can be a
great experience. Not only will you
feel good about helping those in
need, you will have the opportunity to
get to know other parishioners.
