Universal waste is lower-risk hazardous waste that is generated by a large number of people in their
homes or small businesses. Universal waste includes the batteries in your phone or flashlight, the old
cell phone you no longer need, the TV you just replaced, fluorescent bulbs and tubes, and more.
All universal waste contains hazardous components. The hazardous metals or chemicals are safely
contained during normal use, but these same metals and chemicals become problematic and can be
released if the items are broken or disposed of improperly. Because of the hazards associated with
disposing of universal waste, it has been illegal to mix any universal waste with regular trash since
2006.
Universal waste includes these items:
• Common (household) batteries
• Fluorescent tubes and bulbs
• Electronic devices, such as TVs, computers,
printers, cell phones, VCRs, portable telephones,
radios, and microwave ovens
• Cathode ray tubes (the “picture tubes” in
traditional televisions or computer monitors)
• Mercury-containing items, such as older
thermostats and glass thermometers with silver

are able to offer this program through a grant sponsored by the Orange County Waste and Recycling
Department.

your number” and following the manufacturer’s guidelines
on the proper oil change interval for your car, you’re still
going to have used motor oil and filters. You may have
them less often, but you’ll still need to dispose of them
properly. Santa Ana makes it easy for you to recycle motor
oil!
Residents who have curbside trash and recycling
service are eligible for FREE curbside residential pickup
service for used motor oil and oil filters. Simply call Waste
Management at 714-558-7761 to request a collection
bottle for the oil and a bag for the filter. The free plastic
bottle and bag will be placed at your curb. When you have
filled them, call Waste Management to schedule a pickup.
On your regular trash collection day, place the bottle and
bag at the curb, next to your carts (not inside). When your
oil and filter are picked up, an empty bottle and bag will
be left for your next oil change.
If you live in an apartment or condominium, you can recycle your oil at one of the
25 Certified Used Oil Recycling Centers in the city. For locations, call 800-CLEANUP
(800-253-2687) or log onto www.calrecycle.ca.gov/UsedOil/.
You can also recycle used motor oil at the County of Orange Household
Hazardous Waste Collection Centers. The centers located closest to Santa Ana are
at 1071 North Blue Gum Street in Anaheim, at 17121 Nichols Street in Huntington
Beach, and at 6411 Oak Canyon (next to the City Yard) in Irvine. These centers are
open Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m (except major holidays and rainy

Many people treat medical conditions at home
with needles, syringes, and lancets, commonly
referred to as “sharps.” Under state law, sharps
waste cannot go into trash or recycling containers,
but must be handled as medical waste. Residents
of Santa Ana can pick up a free convenient and
easy-to-use Sharps Disposal by Mail kit. Once the
container is filled with used sharps, residents can
simply mail it back in the postage-paid mailing
box. You can receive up to three kits per year at
no charge.

oliday gift giving presents us with an
opportunity to promote greener living. On
holidays, you might give consumable treats,
reusable goods, or homemade items. But if you are
interested in giving green gifts, there are now many other
possibilities. Manufacturers have responded to consumer
demand for more earth-friendly products and are tapping
into the supply of recycled materials that families like
yours provide.
These gift ideas range from everyday items turned
into fun fashion accessories to new items manufactured
from materials previously lost to landfills. Some products
come from small and relatively unknown companies,
while others come from manufacturers of common
brands. We’re offering some examples, but they just hint
at what is available. As you shop, do a little sleuthing to
find green gifts that will be perfect for the people on your

Kitchen utensils, measuring spoons, and measuring
cups make great stocking stuffers. Or, combine them
with mixing bowls and related items for a cookingthemed gift basket. For an earth-friendly choice, consider
bamboo kitchenware. Bamboo kitchenware has the
appearance you want and offers the performance you
need—without the use of petroleum products. With

Grind rubber from old athletic shoes in the sole. The
New Balance newSKY shoes are made from recycled
plastic bottles. Okabashi, a Georgia company, makes
clogs and sandals from recycled plastic and accepts
well-loved shoes back for recycling. Search for “recycled
shoes” online and you’ll be amazed by the
options!

Free Composting Class
Compost is one of nature’s best mulches
and soil amendments, and many times you
can use it instead of commercial fertilizers.
Best of all, compost is cheap, and you can
make it without spending a cent! Using
compost improves soil structure, texture,
and aeration and increases the soil’s waterholding capacity. Compost loosens clay
soils and helps sandy soils retain water.
Adding compost improves soil fertility
and stimulates healthy root development in
plants.
This fall at the Fullerton Arboretum,
Santa Ana residents can take advantage
of a free composting workshop. “Worm
Composting” will be presented on
Saturday, November 17, from 10 to 11:30
a.m. Attendees will receive a discount
voucher for a composting bin (one per
family). In order to get free admission,
please present a current Santa Ana utility
bill on the day of class.

La descomposición de la materia es uno de los mejores abonos

Buying new furniture can be an adventure,
but you may find the prospect of getting
rid of the old furniture you no longer need
daunting. Transporting old furniture or
appliances on your own may not be feasible,
but there are other options to dispose of
these items safely.
Santa Ana residents with curbside
collection are entitled to free bulky item
pickups twice each calendar year, with up
to four items accepted at each pickup. Bulky
items include refrigerators, beds, sofas,
chairs, dishwashers, dressers, bookcases,
washers, dryers, stoves, and other items that
take at least two people to move. Computer
monitors, TVs, and laptop computers cannot
go into your household trash but are also
accepted during bulky item pickups. To
arrange your bulky item pickup, call Waste
Management at 714-558-7761.
The City has made it as easy as
possible to dispose of your old items, but
how about another option before you go
that route? Is your old armchair still in
decent condition? Could your couch help
out a family in need? Would a college
student love to have that table and chairs?
There are so many people in need—why
not donate your used furniture to a local
thrift store or senior center? Of course,
now the transportation may be up to you,
but the result is less waste, and you would
be helping someone in the process. If you
don’t want to donate your used items,
consider selling them online and having
the purchaser arrange for pickup. You could
make a little extra money, or just know that
you found a new home for your old stuff.

In its most recent report to the State, the
City of Santa Ana reported that it has
surpassed the requirement of 50 percent
refuse diversion from the landfill by
achieving 68 percent diversion. That
means two-thirds of our waste isn’t
being wasted at all! Congratulations,
residents! Keep reducing, reusing, and
recycling!
When New Year’s Day, Memorial Day,
Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving
Day, or Christmas Day is observed on a
weekday, collections for the remainder of the
week will be delayed one day. Thanksgiving
falls on a Thursday, so that day’s collection will
occur on Friday, November 23, and Friday’s
collection will occur on Saturday. Christmas Day
is observed on a Tuesday, so that day’s collection
will occur on Wednesday, December 26, and the
rest of the week’s collections will be delayed by
one day.
To maximize the benefit of street sweeping
services, when your refuse collection day falls
on a street sweeping day, your carts should be
placed on the curb or in your driveway, not in
the street, with the handles facing your house.

jueves, así que el servicio de ese jueves pasará
al viernes 23 de noviembre y el del viernes
al sábado. El Día de Navidad se observará el
martes, así que el servicio de ese martes pasará
al miércoles 26 de diciembre y el resto del
servicio de esa semana se pospondrá un día.
Para aprovechar al máximo el servicio de
las barredoras de calles, por favor coloque sus
botes en la acera o en banqueta de su casa
los días que el servicio coincida con el día en
que se barren las calles. Por favor coloque el
bote con el manubrio en dirección a su casa.

Ciudad de Santa al estado, la ciudad
reportó haber sobrepasado el requisito

que pase a recogerlos. Puede que obtenga un poco de dinero o
por lo menos tendrá la satisfacción de haber encontrado un nuevo
hogar para sus pertenencias viejas.
