Weekly Reflection
Reflexión Semanal
The merciful waters of Baptism
Las Aguas Misericordiosas del Bautismo
Saint Paul sums up today’s feast of the Baptism of the
Lord in his letter to Titus: “When the kindness and generous love of God our savior appeared, not because of
any righteous deeds we had done but because of his
mercy, he saved us through the bath of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.” Jesus’ baptism is indeed a
long awaited sign that God has kept the promise referenced in today’s Old Testament reading, “the glory of
the Lord shall be revealed, and all people shall see it
together; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” The
gospel confirms that “after all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended
upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came
from heaven, ‘You are my beloved Son; with you I am
well pleased.’” God the Father acknowledges Jesus as
his Son whom he has asked to redeem mankind. Jesus’ baptism signifies that we must be washed with the
waters of redemptive grace which he gains for us
through his passion, death and resurrection. It is
through baptism that our relationship with the Father is
restored, giving us the opportunity for eternal life. When
we stop and ponder this reality, we experience a jubilation that echoes that captured in Isaiah’s reading, “Go
up on to a high mountain, Zion, herald of glad tidings;
cry out at the top of your voice, ‘Here is your God!’” As
we joyfully conclude the Christmas
season today, we realize that the first
chapter of the salvation story is complete. As we anticipate the commemoration of the remaining chapters of
our redemption, we strive earnestly to
celebrate this Year of Mercy, acknowledging that all is gift, all is merciful
gift.

Did you Know?
Be wary of online friendships
Today’s teens may seem to be always
online, with constant messaging and
sharing on social media with a large audience. The internet is a great place to meet people, but
these meetings come with potential dangers that can put
kids and teens at risk. You don’t know who you’re really
talking to online. Pay attention to the sites your kids on
computers and mobile devices. Monitor the sites that they
visit and ask questions about who they talk to and what
information they provide to their online friends. For a copy
of the VIRTUS® article “Preventing Teen Victimization On

Hermits of Saint Giles
The Hermits of St. Giles is a Contemplative
Association for those who are permanently
physically disabled and have become “home
bound” to the parish. St. Giles of Nimes, in
the Catholic Church, is the patron Saint of the
ill and disabled. The Association of the Hermits of St. Giles is set-up in such a way that
those of us who are home-bound can participate in the parish from our own home by praying for our parish, our pastor and all who belong to the parish. We also offer up the sufferings that stem from our infirmities to assist Our Lady of
the Assumption parish and all its needs. We have a wonderful
website
that

at www.hermitsofstgiles.com. Please give us a "Follow".
If you are home-bound and would like to assist the parish
as a Hermit of St. Giles please call Mark Dextraze at 6479089 or email him at: [email protected]
If you have any prayer requests please call Mark or email

It is OLA's custom that at Thanksgiving and
Christmas times, parishioners donate food
and OLA volunteers prepare food baskets for delivery by
the parishioners to needy families. This year the parishioners donated enough food at Thanksgiving to be delivered to 144 families consisting of 677 people and at
Christmas time to 144 families consisting of 673 people.
