Principal’s Message
Dear Manatee Bay Elementary Families and Friends,
Where did the time go? It seems like we just got started and here we are looking at
2016! We are excited to announce that last month, 71 Intermediate Students in Grades
3-5 participated in our Honor Roll Assembly. Also last month, we held our induction ceremony for both our Safety Patrols and our Student Council representatives. We were
honored to have Mayor Stermer here to preside over this very special occasion.
Our students are soaring to success in First in Math! We are still number #1 in the Nation! That’s because of all the hard work you put into being the best!
You don’t want to miss our Manatee Bay Winter Concert under the leadership of Mr.
Mark Henschel. This Winter Concert truly ushers in the Spirit of the Holiday season.
If you go to KC Wright don’t forget to look out for our Manatee Bay Artists. Several students have works on display. Thanks Mrs. Bramhall for showcasing our Amazing Artists!
Manatee Bay is always beaming with excitement from Bottle Rockets being launched to
First Grade Holiday Showcase to Book Buddies, STEM Buddies, trips to Washington
DC and St. Augustine as well as an Hour of Code and Family Night at Carolina Ale
House, just to name a few of the activities lined up this month.
Our PTA did an outstanding job on the Fall Book Fair and is currently preparing for our
Annual Holiday Shoppe, where students will have an opportunity to shop for Holiday
gifts right here in school. The Manatee Bay PTA does so much for us, please plan to
come out and attend the General PTA meeting which will be held in the café.
Bayside Clubs are coming back for Session 2. Please register! Classes are filling up
fast! For more information, please contact Mrs. Jaime Vital at 754 323-6450.
Safety is everyone’s job. During this busy season please be safe, be careful and be smart. There have been a few close calls in our
parking lot. Please drive responsibly.
We were able to give over $200 in addition to over 30 boxes of food to families in need in our community. In addition. Thank you for
your generous donations! Also thanks to all the students who donated new and slightly used books to give to other students in Broward
County.
We wanted to all to know that we are truly blessed to have Super Students, Terrific Teachers and Sensational Staff here at the Bay.
One of the things that makes Manatee Bay so special is the generosity and the kindness that is felt not only during the Holiday season
but all year long. This is the time of year where love is all around. Please take the time to tell the people in your life how much they
mean to you. This is the gift that will last a lifetime so share it liberally with all you hold dear.
On behalf of Your Administrative Team, the Faculty and Staff here at Manatee Bay Elementary we wish you and your families a wonderful holiday season full of love, laughter, and joy!

Principal and Assistant Principal
“Manatee Bay”! tienen expuestas.
tenga cuidado y sea inteligente.

Kindergarten
We have been working very hard to meet the Florida Standards that our children
need to learn. It has been a very rewarding process, especially when we see how
much they have learned since the beginning of the year.
We had a Fall Festival where the children rotated to do a different activity in all the
different Kindergarten classrooms. They had a fun day especially because they
wore a storybook costume to school.
We just had our Feast for Thanksgiving that was catered by Cracker Barrel. We all
ate outside and enjoyed a wonderful turkey lunch. some of the children wore
accessories from either a Pilgrim or a Native Indian. The children looked so cute.
We all have computers in our class so the children can go on I-ready at least 3
times a week. It will be on the homework calendar in December. Please encourage
your child to do it at home. It was proven to help them in reading and math.
Please read to your child every night and ask them what the story was about and
where it took place and who the characters are. This will help them with their
comprehension also.
We hope you have a very healthy and safe holiday.
Thanks from The K Team......

Evaluation Input
First Grade
The end of 2015 is here. The students have been working hard and would
like to present you with a Winter Wonderland Showcase. Please join us on
December 11th at 8:30. Students have been practicing and are very excited
to show off their voices. We will also celebrate the holidays during
rotations on December 16th. Please be aware that although homework
should be completed independently, we would like parents to review it
and check for understanding. Take the time over the break to relax and
refresh. This is also a great time to read AR books to help earn points towards receiving an AR shirt and get ahead on some I-Ready lessons.
The first grade teachers would like to wish you all a Happy Holiday and
Happy New Year!!!

2nd Grade
The students in second grade have been busy
learning about Native Americans. We are studying how the weather and geographical region
affected their way of life and culture. While is
science, they are learning about soil and
weather. We are also reading non-fictional
texts while learning about text features and
how they help us find information. Students are
using these strategies to assist when writing
opinions and supporting their answers with
text evidence.
Students in second grade also enjoyed a visit
from the fire department. They learned about
the importance of having smoke alarms in each
bedroom and when to change the batteries.
The fire officials also talked about having a
family meeting place in case of a
fire or other emergency.
Student Council
Thank you for making our Harvest Drive a successful one. We were able to collect $245 in gift cards for Croissant Park Elementary. We had more then enough items to supply Westwood Heights Elementary and families
in need for Western High School's Harvest Drive.
Toy Drive—November 30th -Dec. 11th
Help support Student Council's toy drive. Bring in a
new, unwrapped toy from Nov. 30th—Dec. 11th. You
will receive a letter to bring in a gift for a girl or boy in
a specific grade level.

From The School Counselor
As the holidays approach, we are all
looking for gifts to give our children.
As 2016 begins, let us focus on what
we can give them that will last a lifetime.
**Give the gift of self-confidence by
helping them understand they must
trust themselves.
**Give them the gift of possibilities
by allowing them the freedom to be
anything.
**Give them the gift of a life without
needless fears by teaching them to
tackle problems.
Things don't matter. Your
acceptance, appreciation and love
do!
Happy Holidays.
We held our monthly School Advisory Council (SAC) meeting on November
13th in the media center. At this meeting we discussed the Florida Standards
Assessment (FSA) and how Manatee Bay performed in relation to all Elementary Schools in Broward County. Manatee Bay scored 2nd overall in the District
when combining ELA and Math for Grade 3-5. Congratulations and we are very
proud of the hard work put in everyday by our student, teachers, parents and
community members.
This meeting we focused on the Accreditation Standard 2: Governance and
Leadership. The system operates under governance and leadership that
promote and support student performance and system effectiveness. This
standard has six separate indicators. Our next SAC meeting will be Tuesday,
December 15th at 2:15 PM in the media center. We hope that you will
consider joining us.
3rd Grade
Hello, amazing 3rd grade families! November was a super month for
3rd grade! Thank you for all of your incredible support for our grade
and school during both the Book Fair and on Publix Family Math Night!
Learning is so much fun!
Our 3rd grade math skills are really getting sharp! Practicing our times
tables every night is making a big difference as we master basic
multiplication and the properties of multiplication and finally start…
division! Please continue to support your children with regularly
reviewing their basic math facts with them. It will make all the new
math learning so much easier as their fluency improves, and they will
be proud of themselves!
The students lifted each other up with notes of support during our
“Bucket Filling” week. This was a special chance to reach out to each
other and show our too-often unspoken appreciation of how special
each child is to our
whole group. What a
great way to look forward to December and
our special winter celebrations together before
our holiday break!
Thank you for all you do
to support your children
and our school - have a
wonderful winter break.
ESE Corner
December is an exciting month with lots of activity. The InD cluster will be studying
about Bats and their life cycle, and the winter holidays. We will hold a Winter Festival
as we culminate the end of the 2015 school year. On December 9 we will take a Field
Trip to Flamingo Gardens to learn about creatures in their habitats. Parents, please
remember that with a 2 week break out of the regular routine your children may
regress. So, it is in their best interest to continue to reinforce the skills they have been
working on in school.
Happy Holidays from your InD Team!
Dyscalculia is a learning disability that includes many different types of math difficulties. Early warning signs include having trouble learning to count and recognizing
number symbols (7 as the number seven). Children with dyscalculia may also struggle
when connecting a number to a real life situation (5 can apply to any group of 5 items,
such as 5 books, 5 cookies, etc.). They may also have trouble remembering numbers
and will skip numbers or say them out of order. As children get older, some signs of
Dyscalculia are trouble recognizing numbers and symbols, difficulty learning and
recalling basic facts and/or operation signs (+, - ) and having difficulty understanding
math vocabulary such as greater than, less than, as well as coming up with a plan to
solve a math problem. Accommodations are helpful to assist children with Dyscalculia
(ex. extended time, lessons broken into smaller steps, reduced assignments etc.). At
home, some things that might help are: playing math games (make sure they are fun
while learning and practicing skills), provide quiet area when doing homework (no
distractions), boost childís confidence (point out their strengths, give lots of praise for
areas they do well), and have patience while they are learning.
Speech & Language
Speech groups are actively working on improving their intelligibility of speech. If your
working on the S, try "Six snakes saw a spider by the seat". If your working on the R
sound, try "Four reindeer ran a race in Rhode Island".
Our language groups are developing their vocabulary skills and improving their
comprehension skills. A fun activity to expand language skills is to have your child
describe a word and you have to guess what word they are describing. They cannot
say the word they are describing.
Bayside Clubs
Bayside Clubs is now registering for our Winter Session. Check out our club offerings, many of
which were student initiated and register for the FUN! Fun with a purpose is integrated into our
activities that provide our students with enjoyable and interesting clubs designed to boost their
confidence and curiosity. Join the fun TODAY!

4th Grade
Our very busy fourth graders had a BLAST
slogging through the sloughs of the Everglades!
They got up close and personal with this ecosystem which is unique to Florida. Students
explored how humans impact nature and why it
is important to be careful with our fragile
resources. Soon, the children will be packing
their bags and heading north to St. Augustine,
the oldest continually settled European city in
the continental United States. Everyone is VERY
EXCITED!
Students are working diligently on the Florida
Standards. They continue to deepen their
knowledge by higher level reading skills to
analyze text. In writing, we are encouraging
the students to use text evidence to support
their thoughts. In math, we are finishing up
our unit on division and moving towards
working with factors and multiples.
5th Grade
Fifth grade is working hard to meet our goals. In
Reading, we will continue to work on Main Idea of
a text as well as working on many other reading
skills. This careful reading and understanding of
text is helping us to find solid evidence to write explanatory essays. In Math, we are working on dividing and multiplying decimals using several different
methods. In Science, we are finishing up learning
about weather and will be participating in a special
weather presentation by Craig Setzer, the channel
4 meteorologist on December 2nd. After weather,
we will be moving on to animal and plant adaptations that help them survive their environments. In
Social Studies, we are continuing to learn about
Native Americans and the first settlers in America.
We will also be learning about our nation’s capital
this month and some students will actually be visiting Washington DC in December as well.
We look forward to a wonderful month as we
get closer to the holiday season.
Partners in Education

Spotlight on Specials!
National COMPUTER SCIENCE WEEK — Dec. 7th – Dec. 11th, 2015
CODE LOG-A-THON: At Manatee Bay Elementary every student will have an opportunity to learn computer
science during their Technology specials time. During class all students will start with age appropriate
coursework that is provided by Code.org. Students will continue with the coursework for several rotations,
from Dec to March, here at Manatee Bay. The Code curriculum provides students the opportunity to develop
problem solving skills no matter what their age. The amount of hours that the students spend exploring
computer science will be logged and totaled for the entire student body. Our goal as a school is for every
single student to complete a minimum of five individual hours of computer science exploration giving our
school over 5 thousand hours of coding experience.
Broward County Public School asks “Did You Know?”
By 2020, there will be one million more computer science jobs than computer science students.*
Computer science is a foundational field that can prepare students for the 21st century workforce. The basic
skills can be applied and utilized in many different career paths.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts one in every two STEM jobs in the country will be in
computing occupations, with more than 150,000 job openings annually. This makes it one of the
fastest growing occupations in the United States.*

Volunteer Procedures
Keeping students safe is a priority. The STAR System (Security Tracking And Response) continues to be used at all schools. The STAR
System provides schools with high-speed security checks against local, state and national sex offender databases and against state
and local law enforcement files. When parents, visitors, and volunteers come to school, the office staff will swipe their driver ’s
license into a bar code reader, verify the name, take a photo and print a badge with this picture. All visitors are asked to check out
in the office when leaving school.
Volunteers must complete the on-line volunteer/ mentor application before helping in school. Go to www.browardschools.com/
getinvolved to complete the online application. The first time volunteers come to assist, the front office staff will ask for their social
security number and driver’s license to print their Volunteer Badge. Only approved volunteers are allowed to assist in the classroom. If you do not have access to a computer or you need assistance, please contact the school.
