Sunday of Easter May 3, 2015 Pastor’s Corner I am the vine, you are the branches, abide in me as I am in you.” What else would this statement of Jesus mean other than “He is our source of Life?” These words reveal to us that the secret to living a holy and perfect life is to stay connected with Jesus. How do we stay connected with Jesus? Above all, through the intimacy of prayer. Prayer is a sincere conversation with God inspired by a loving and confident relationship with Him. Prayer affords us the opportunity to talk with Jesus and at the same time listen to His words and intimations. We also stay connected with Jesus through the living of His commandments and teachings. “Whoever says that He loves me but does not keep my commandments is a liar” (1Jh.2:4). Jesus commandments and teachings are guidepost to living a good life. They set up the parameters of Christian life that the following of which will lead us to a happy and joyful life. We also stay connected with Jesus through the Sacraments. The Sacraments are channels of grace. They renew, nourish and sustain us. They bring us closer to Jesus Christ who is the origin and source of all grace. But Jesus’ desire does not only end in staying connected with Him. He also wants us to bear fruits – rich and overflowing fruits. He wants us to bear fruits of love, peace, joy, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and self-control. He wants us to produce fruits of kindness, generosity, forgiveness. Very clearly, He warns that if we do not bring forth fruits, we shall be pruned to allow greater possibility of producing in abundance. Points for reflection: How stable is my connection with Jesus? Is my faith-relationship with Jesus producing abundant fruits? Where are the areas of my life I need to be pruned? ************** National Day of Prayer (May 7, 2015) What is National Day of Prayer? The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. The Task Force is a privately funded organization whose purpose is to encourage participation on the National Day of Prayer. It exists to communicate with every individual the need for personal repentance and prayer, to create appropriate materials, and to mobilize the Christian community to intercede for America’s leaders and its families. The Task Force represents a Judeo Christian expression of the national observance, based on our understanding that this country was birthed in prayer and in reverence for the God of the Bible. Significance of National Day of Prayer? The National Day of Prayer has great significance for us as a nation as it enables us to recall and to teach the way in which our founding fathers sought the wisdom of God when faced with critical decisions. It stands as a call for us to humbly come before God, seeking His guidance for our leaders and His grace upon us as a people. The unanimous passage of the bill establishing the National Day of Prayer as an annual event, signifies that prayer is as important to our nation today as it was in the beginning. Like Thanksgiving or Christmas, this day has become a national observance placed on all Hallmark calendars and observed annually across the nation and in Washington, D.C. Every year, local, state, and federal observances were held from sunrise in Maine to sunset in Hawaii, uniting Americans from all socio-economic, political and ethnic backgrounds in prayer for our nation. It is estimated that over two million people attended more than 30,000 observances – organized by approximately 40,000 volunteers. At state capitols, county court houses, on the steps of city halls, and in schools, businesses, churches and homes, people stopped their activities and gathered for prayer. Bless the Diocese of San Diego with more priests to shepherd your people, Priests with hearts like your own. Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us. Pray for Priests and Vocations “Now we ask you to respect those who work hard among you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work.” (1 Thess. 5:12, 13, NIV) When we pray for vocations for the priesthood, diaconate and religious, we actually pray for ourselves, since holy priests, deacons and religious should result in a holier people. When we pray for these servants of Christ, we also win the favor of Christ, for we, in so praying, are furthering His work. By praying for vocations we are helping our children and our children's children because we are using a meritorious means of preserving our faith for them. “Now we ask you to respect those who work hard among you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work.” (1 Thess. 5:12, 13, NIV) F A I T H F O R M A T I O N C O R N E R MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH GROUP St. Stephen’s Middle School Youth Group is for youth in grades 6, 7 & 8 and meets on Monday nights from 7:008:30 pm in the parish hall. SAINT OF THE DAY:James, Son of Alphaeus: We know nothing of this man except his name, and of course the fact that Jesus chose him to be one of the 12 pillars of the New Israel, his Church. He is not the James of Acts, son of Clopas, “brother” of Jesus and later bishop of Jerusalem and the traditional author of the Letter of James. James, son of Alphaeus, is also known as James the Lesser to avoid confusing him with James the son of Zebedee, also an apostle and known as James the Greater. (AmericanCatholic.org) A Very Special Event The Missionary Society of Saint James the Apostle is sending one of their Latin American missionaries to our parish next week as part of our special appeal for the South American missions. Founded by Cardinal Cushing in 1958, members of the Society are diocesan priests, from English speaking countries, who work with the exceptionally poor in Peru and Ecuador. Please be as generous as your means allow to help those less fortunate.
