Spiritual Notes: The name Elisha means “the Lord saves.” As a disciple of the prophet Elijah, he continues to call Israel to remain faithful in a time when many were worshiping other gods. As Elijah had multiplied oil and grain for the widow as a sign that he was a “man of God,” so too, Elisha feeds a hundred with twenty barley loaves. This recalls the manna provided through Moses in the wilderness and also anticipates the messianic banquet, at which the Lord will feed the people. For us as Christians, it also anticipates Jesus’ miracle of the loaves and fish. A miracle found in all four Gospels. The author of Ephesians urges us to “live in a manner worthy of the call you have received.” As Christians, we share “one faith, one Baptism” and so are united in Christ. Through our common Baptism, we share in God’s life, nurtured by the gift of the Eucharist. Today, we begin to read from the Gospel of John. For five Sundays, we will her from John’s sixth chapter which narrates the miracle of the loaves and fish and gives us Jesus’ Bread of Life discourse. John tells us that the “Jewish feast of Passover was near.” The unleavened bread eaten by the Hebrews when they left Egypt and the manna God provided for them in the wilderness are two items associated with the feast. Philip’s comment that “two hundred days’ wages worth of food” would not satisfy the crowd serves to emphasize the size of the crowd and the extent of the miracle. Starting with “five barley loaves and two fish,” Jesus provides enough so that the crowd “had their fill” and still there is enough left over to fill “twelve wicker baskets.” Like the wine at Cana, which was better than the wine that ran out, this extravagant supply of food indicates that in Jesus, God gives us quality gifts in abundance. For reflection: Do I consider the Eucharist bread for the journey? When have I experienced God’s overwhelming generosity? In Our Parish A special thank you to all of our “Parish Bulletin Sponsors.” Through your generous donations, we are able to publish 700 bulletins each week for our parishioners, free of charge to our parish. St. Joseph 2014 Festival Raffle Winners The third weekend in July has come and gone, the Family Life Center and TCCES parking lots are empty, telling us that St. Joseph Festival 2015 is now history. A history that once again includes the hard work of more than 200 volunteers. We can’t begin to list the names, for surely many would be missed. Men using vacation days to organize and set up all of the electrical needs. Men and youth doing back breaking work in the heat and humidity of July to set up and tear down tents, erect fence, stages, putt-putt golf. Men and women cooking homemade swiss steak, spaghetti dinners, chicken halves, and tamales. Volunteers calling other volunteers to stand in the heat and behind grills, others provide the opportunity for gambling, and sell tickets. An entire parish of volunteers and employees working long into the night to provide food, entertainment, and to clean up the mess left behind. Whole families working together to arrange for raffle prizes and find festival sponsors, distribute posters and put up lawn signs, others counting money, and selling beer and wine. Ladies made homemade crafts for the past year to sell. Youth provided a safe environment for children to play. These volunteers, plus hundreds of parish members that came out to celebrate and support the parish by spending their treasures each day. Others made generous gifts of money and goods to make our festival possible. It takes one amazing community of believers united with the blessings of God to celebrate together as we did this July 17th, 18th, and 19th. Thank you and may God bless you throughout the next year, until we come together again, next July 15-17 2016.
