Welcome to our Parish
MISSION STATEMENT—We, the community of St. Catherine of Siena Parish, located within
the larger, diverse and artistic seaside community of Laguna Beach, recognize and celebrate
the uniqueness which is grounded in the sacred mysteries and traditions of the Roman Catholic Church and in the history and lives of our individuals, families and leaders. Built on these
roots, and in order to see the world as God sees it, we commit ourselves to: being a welcoming
sanctuary and a place of prayer and worship, nurturing, assisting, encouraging and serving all
those in need, offering all generations opportunities for personal and communal growth, and,
by these commitments, to honor our call to evangelization.

THE BEGINNING OF EVERYTHING
Everyone recognizes the truth of good proverbs, and so they endure from generation to generation. The Russians
have a surprisingly bold one that fits this Sunday’s Gospel: “Bread is the beginning of everything.”
Judging from the first reading, Elijah might have felt that it was too late for bread—too late for life itself. This
great prophet was at the end of his rope and endurance. Then, not one, but two angels visit him. One offers food and
drink. The other gives startling directions. For Elijah, this food from the angels is bread for his journey. On the
strength of the heaven sent gift of food, he walks to the mountain of God.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus offers himself, not just as bread for the journey, but as bread for life itself. He gives his
flesh as life for the world. “I am the bread of life” (John 6:48). He is the beginning of everything.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
In an age given to slogan T-shirts, one of the last bastions of “dressing up” is the wedding. Everyone
seems to stretch toward the old ideal of “Sunday best” for these moments. In our tradition, clothing is immensely important. Coming out of the baptismal water, we are immediately vested with a white garment.
“You have clothed yourself in Christ,” the new Christian is told, and a white garment is the token of being
born into God’s family. Sadly, this is the last time most Christians wear this garb until their funeral, when
the family spreads a pall as a reminder of of baptismal identity.
Increasingly today, we are seeing the alb as the proper garb for liturgical ministers, men and women. In
ancient Rome, sleeveless tunics of varying colors were worn by everyone, and so at baptism the new Christians could be expected to wear their new garb under their everyday clothes. Sleeves were a problem for
ancient Romans, who thought they were a barbarian fashion. As is so often the case, eventually the barbarians won the day, and by the third century the long-sleeved garment worn by ministers today was familiar
liturgical garb.

Pope Francis Speaks to Families
From Pope Francis Speaks to Families, Words of Joy and Life. The WORD among us
ARE YOU PRAYING?
My question to you is this: “Are you praying?” Do you know that you can speak with Jesus,
with the Father, with the Holy Spirit as you speak to a friend? And not just any friend, but the
greatest and most trusted of your friends!. . .
Once again I invite you to encounter the Lord by frequently reading sacred Scripture. If you are
not already in the habit of doing so, begin with the Gospels. Read a line or two each day. Let
God’s word speak to your heart and enlighten your path (cf. Psalm 119:105). You will discover
that God can be “seen” also in the faces of your brothers and sisters, especially those who are
most forgotten: the poor, the hungry, those who thirst, strangers, the sick, those imprisoned
(cf. Matthew 25:31-46). Have you ever had this experience? Dear young people, in order to
enter into the logic of the kingdom of heaven, we must recognize that we are poor with the
poor. A pure heart is necessarily one which has been stripped bare, a heart that knows how to
bend down and share its life with those most in need.
Encountering God in prayer, the reading of the Bible, and in the fraternal life will help you better to know the Lord and yourselves. Like the disciples on the way to Emmaus (cf. Luke 24:1335), the Lord’s voice will make your hearts burn within you. He will open your eyes to recognize his presence and to discover the loving plan he has for your life.

6:48). Él es el comienzo de todo.
