THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT SCHEDULE OF MASSES FOR CHRISTMAS WEEKEND Next Sunday, December 24 is the Fourth Sunday of Advent and the Vigil of Christmas. Fourth Sunday of Advent Masses on Saturday, Dec 23 at 5 p.m. and in Spanish at 6:30 p.m. and on Sunday, Dec 24 at 7:30, 9:00 & 10:30 a.m. and in Spanish at 12 noon. Vigil of Christmas Masses for the Vigil of Christmas will be celebrated on Sunday, December 24 at 5:00 p.m. (Family Mass), 7:30 p.m. (in Spanish) and 10:00 p.m. (Traditional). DECEMBER 17, 2006 HELP FOR NEEDY FAMILIES AT CHRISTMAS St. Mary’s Parish has signed up 30 families for our Christmas program. That’s 96 children that will have a happier Christmas celebration because of you! Each child will receive $25 each of Toys R Us, Marshalls, and Value + grocery. The total parish commitment is $7,200. We have thus far received $2,000 toward this endeavor. Can you help us cover the other $5,000? If you want to help, please put your monetary donation in an envelope marked “Christmas” Baskets or put it on your check as a Memo. Christmas Day Masses on Monday, December 25 will be celebrated at 8:00 & 10:00 a.m. in English and 12:00 noon in Spanish. There will be no evening Mass Christmas Day. SPECIAL NOTICE Thank you to those who responded to a pledge commitment in the form of Electronic Funds Transfer. We have encountered some glitches and the process has been delayed. You will receive a form in the mail in the near future. Thanks for your patience. CHRISTMAS FLOWERS If you are interested in making a donation toward a poinsettia plant to beautify our Christmas altars, keep an eye out for the special offering envelopes or write “Poinsettias” on the memo portion of a check. If you wish, the donation can be made in someone’s memory. This is a beautiful way to remember your loved ones during the Christmas season and be a part of the holiday decorations. GOD’S HOUSE In God’s house, we should be teaching our children how to behave. God’s house is the most beautiful, perfect place to teach our children respect, love, etc. Teach you children to kneel, sit quietly, and if old enough, to pray. This is the time of their lives that they will soak up all this information. They will pass all this to their children as we are doing. God’s house should always be remembered as the place they can go when troubled, hurt, etc. If we do it right, it will always be there for them. Do not let them use the envelopes or missals to draw or mutilate. Others need them to worship and to support the parish. Let’s make God proud of how we are treating our beautiful St. Mary, Star of the Sea. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION This week, our celebration of Advent makes a transition in ritual and texts. Beginning December 18, the countdown of nine days (a novena) to Christmas sees a heightened sense of expectation, and also a turning from the call of the Baptist in the wilderness to the events leading up to Jesus’ birth. In ancient Spain, December 18 was once celebrated as the “Feast of the Expectancy,” and customs grew up to heighten readiness in the homes. Some customs arise from monastic life and practice and spill over into our parish life. Beginning tonight, those who pray Vespers will sing in the opening phrase a beautiful title of Christ. These titles belong to a collection of opening phrases called the “O Antiphons” after the awe-inspired “O” sung on the first note. There’s a playful code in the titles: O Wisdom, O Lord, O Flower of Jesse, O Key of David, O Dawn, O Ruler, O Emmanuel. When you take their Latin names—Sapientia, Adonai, Radix, and so on—the titles form an acrostic when you read them backwards: “ERO CRAS.” In Latin, that is translated as “I will be there tomorrow!” It’s as if Christ were answering the prayers of the waiting people in the words of the prayers themselves. —James Field, © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. FAITH FORMATION FOR CHILDREN: CCD CLASSES are from 8:45 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. in the Star of the Sea Center. Contact Joe McKnight at 722-1000 for more information. LITURGY OF THE WORD FOR CHILDREN is during the 10:30 a.m. Mass after the first prayer. Father invites the children to come forward, gives them a blessing, and dismisses the children so they can go to the Juan Diego Room and share the Word of God. They return to the main church at the time of the offering of the gifts. The children enjoy sharing the Word at their level. So we invite all of them to come and join us. PREPARE FOR THE HOLIDAYS: Just Be Quiet for a Day Come to Mission San Luis Rey Retreat Center’s continuing “Quiet Days” on Monday, December 18. For more information, call Jahna White at 760.586.6356. NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING (NFP) QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK Farmers in Palestine used large fork-like shovels to throw grain into the air. The heavier good grain fell to the threshing floor, while the chaff which was lighter blew aside and was later burned. We certainly all want to be good grain. This Advent season, we ask with great courage, “What are we to do?” Even greater courage is needed to listen and to respond to God’s answer to our question. ADULTS: What can I do this week to listen, to see, and to act on God’s response to the question posed to John the Baptist? CHILDREN: How can I be more welcoming and friendly to other children this week? If you have been looking for the ideal method of family planning: 99% effective, safe, inexpensive, and spiritually enriching, call for more information on Natural Family Planning. Classes are offered by the Diocese of San Diego and are taught in both English and Spanish. Next English class starts January 17. To register, call 858.490.8297. THANKS FROM THE “FEED THE HUNGRY” MINISTRY Thanks to all who have responded to our call for items to stock the Parish Pantry. These items go to families who usually have cooking facilities, but that is not “a given”. Please keep this in mind when making your purchases. Whenever possible, please watch that cans have flip tops (no need for a can opener). Especially needed are fruits, ready-to-eat soups (canned soup not requiring water), and canned meats (tuna, ham, stew, ravioli, etc.) Donations can be brought to the parish office during any of our regular office hours. © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.
