26th Sunday in Ordinary Time

26th Sunday in Ordinary Time
"'My child, remember that you received what was good
during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received
what was bad.'" Today's Gospel reading is Jesus' parable
about a "rich man," whose name we do not know, and a
"poor man," named Lazarus. The story shows both men
after death, the rich man in torment, and Lazarus
enjoying the comfort that he was deprived of during his
earthly life.
It's important to understand that this teaching does not
imply that having wealth leads to eternal punishment.
Rather, we look at how the rich man USED his wealth
and see there the cause of the problem. As Jesus says,
this man "dressed in purple garments and fine linen and
dined sumptuously each day." Clearly, he had abundant
wealth and focused it all upon serving himself. To
further the accusation against him, all the while "lying at
his door was a poor man ... who would gladly have eaten
his fill of the scraps that fell from the rich man's table."
But the rich man paid Lazarus no heed, and THIS is why
he now suffers. Because he would not deign to "suffer"
at all during his life by sharing his linen clothing or
feeding his poor neighbor covered with sores.
This selfishness became the rich man's
SELF-condemnation. He put himself in torment because
he blatantly disobeyed God's law to love his neighbor.
This challenging parable urges us to examine our own
behavior and ask how WE use our wealth--whatever
size our bank account may be. Are we willing to assist
our neighbors in need? Or do we walk by the poor,
excusing our own comfort? Let us heed Christ's warning
today that such earthly comforts are, in the long run,
short-lived.
Ministry News… It takes a parish...
Finance Council Member Needed
Are you savvy when it comes to financial matters?
Do you have knowledge of business processes and/or
experience reviewing financial reports and analyzing budgets
and expenditures?
Our finance committee is a group of volunteers who play a
critical role in advising and guiding the pastor as he strives to
make the best, informed financial decisions for the parish.
This committee reviews the income and expenses of the
parish monthly, advises on matters of the budget, planning and
the “nitty gritty” of running a parish. In some ways a parish is
a very unique entity with ministry-related goals and concerns,
while, at the same time, it operates much like other businesses
with daily concerns about overhead, costs and management.
We would be excited to put your distinct knowledge and
experience to use to help your parish. This committee meets
once a month from September to June. Interested individuals
should contact the rectory for additional information at
603-882-4362.
Lk 16:25
"Abraham replied, 'My child, remember that
you received what was good during your
lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what
was bad; but now he is comforted here,
whereas you are tormented.'"

[email protected].
Parish Council Member Needed
We are currently seeking a new member for our Parish
Pastoral Council. We, as a parish, count on this group of
parishioners, to be the voice of the parish and advise our
pastor on a wide variety of subjects, including liturgy, special
events, parishioner concerns and much more. It is a great way
serve the parish and your fellow parishioners. Meetings are
held once a month in the evening, on the 2nd Tuesday of the
month, from September to June. If you are interested in
joining this committee, please call the rectory office at
603-882-4362.

NH Diocesan Priest Retirement Fund
During all masses this weekend, you will have a
chance to give back to dozens of diocesan priests by
supporting the Priests Retirement Trust Fund. These
priests have each given many years, often forty or
more, in service to God and the Catholic
communities of New Hampshire. Last year was the
eighth annual collection for this fund and, despite an
ongoing difficult economy, parishioners gave
generously. However the need continues this year.
Currently we have 48 priests who are supported by
this fund. When you contribute to the Priests
Retirement Trust Fund, your gift will go towards
helping current and future retired priests. We also ask
you to prayerfully consider giving more than a
one-time offering though pledged or planned giving.
