About the 5th Street Commercial Corridor Program In 2008, Esperanza began the 5th Street Commercial Corridor Management Program as a way of supporting existing business owners in the Hunting Park neighborhood. Through funding from the Philadelphia Commerce Department’s Targeted Corridor Revitalization Management Program, we provide capacity building consultation and coaching, training, marketing support, and fundraising assistance. We have been successful in helping our local business owners raise funds that support improvements and growth. As of 2015, the Corridor Management Program serves over 118 businesses on 5th Street and Hunting Park Avenue, and is expanding its service area to include the Wyoming Avenue Corridor from the Roosevelt Boulevard to Front Street. In addition to business assistance, Esperanza has provided a long-term, community-driven vision for the revitalization of Hunting Park and its business district with the release of the Hunting Park Neighborhood Strategic Plan 2022 and the ongoing implementation of the 5th Street and Hunting Park Streetscape Master Plan. About Esperanza Driven by the biblical mandate to serve and advocate for “the least of these,” Esperanza strengthens Hispanic communities in Philadelphia and nationwide. Founded in 1987, the organization features programs in community redevelopment, workforce development, education, capacity building, and advocacy in an integrated community development strategy. Nueva Esperanza Housing and Economic Development (NEHED) was founded to confront poverty, disinvestment, blight, and lack of economic opportunity in the Hunting Park neighborhood of Philadelphia through affordable housing and economic solutions. To date, Esperanza and NEHED’s community development efforts on North 5th Street amount to approximately $38.1 million in direct expenditures that have resulted in a regional economic impact of nearly $93.2 million. 4 BusinessDir_pgsFINAL.indd 4 11/29/15 4:09 PM 5th Street Corridor Map Getting around 5th Street is easy! Measuring only 0.8 miles from Roosevelt Boulevard to Luzerne Street, Hunting Park’s 5th Street corridor is easily explored on foot. The park itself is located at 9th Street and Hunting Park Avenue, so just walk four blocks west from 5th on the Avenue to visit it. If you’re short on time or coming from outside the area, SEPTA is a quick and easy way to get around the neighborhood: ; The 47 bus runs on 5th Street between Olney and South Philadelphia (with night owl service) ; The 75 trolleybus runs on Wyoming Avenue from Wayne Junction rail station to Castor Ave. ; The 4 bus runs between Fern Rock and Pattison Avenue via 9th Street in Hunting Park ; The Broad Street Subway runs between Fern Rock and Pattison Avenue (24 hours on the weekend, night owl buses during the week) ; Call 215-580-7000 or visit www.septa.org for schedules and more information. Visit http://philapark.org/ for details. 5 BusinessDir_pgsFINAL.indd 5 11/29/15 4:09 PM Funders and Partners Hunting Park Business Association (HPBA) The Hunting Park Business Association (HPBA) is a multicultural business association dedicated to revitalizing Hunting Park as a commercial destination, increasing the profitability of its members, improving the visibility of local businesses, and fostering collaboration and cooperation among businesses. Initially founded in 2008 as a project of Esperanza’s 5th Street Commercial Corridor program, the HPBA re-established itself in 2013 as an independent organization, with elected officers from the local business community, official bylaws, and a body of members. HPBA dues and business advertising fees help to fund the publication of this directory. Look for blue “HPBA Member” boxes to support member businesses. Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) The Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) is dedicated to helping community residents transform distressed neighborhoods into healthy and sustainable communities of choice and opportunity — good places to work, do business and raise children. LISC is the leading funder of Esperanza’s commercial corridor cleaning program, which provides year-round cleaning services to businesses on 5th Street and Wyoming Avenue, and supports its development and placemaking work on the corridor.
