I was recently interviewed by some fifth grade students who asked
me about our school being the Voyagers and where that came from.
When I was assigned as principal of Alta Vista in July of 2014, I began
asking questions about Alta Vista and what their mascot was. None of
the staff (even ones who had been at Alta Vista for 16 plus years)
could tell me and I was not able to find any sign of a mascot. Alta Vista
had previously been a Montessori campus and was known for that
and had lost some of that identity when the Montessori was
combined with Lake Waco to become Lake Air Montessori several
years back.
To continue our quest for learning as a staff, our staff did a book study
about Teaching like a Pirate and I like to incorporate decorations to
going along with the theme. I also contemplated a lot on what I
wanted for our students at Alta Vista and that was a love of learning
for students and to know that learning is a voyage that hopefully does
not end. The pirate theme and voyagers was a hit with our staff. After
discussing with several staff members, the name fit and we have
adopted it as our school mascot. As a staff, I began using the anchor at

the beginning to launch our staff on our voyage and throughout the
year reminded them that we needed to stay true to what we believe
and even during stressful or difficult times to stay anchored to our
mission. This is how the Alta Vista Voyager and our anchor came to
symbolize Alta Vista.

October’s featured character trait is respect. Guidance lessons helped
students distinguish between respectful behaviors like saying excuse
me and disrespectful behaviors like name calling. Students practiced
assertiveness, or how to stand up for their selves by using respectful
words and actions.

Mrs. Long’s 3rd grade students take time to read “Bullies Are A Pain in
the Brain”, a book that helps students identify, report and respond to
bullying behavior.

An easy way to help students with math at home is to encourage
them to practice their math facts. First and second graders should
master their addition and subtraction facts to 20. Third, fourth, and
fifth graders should master their multiplication and division facts. An
easy way to practice facts is using flashcards. You can make these out
of paper or notecards, or purchase them inexpensively at many local
stores, including Walmart, Target, HEB, and Dollar Tree. Students also
love practicing facts using technology. Here are some FREE website
and apps that students can use to practice their math facts:

Readers are Leaders
Third, fourth and fifth grade students have been working on reading
and learning about biographies. Fifth grade did research on
individuals and presented their reports to their classes. Students read
biographies about musicians, artists, scientists, presidents as well as
other famous individuals. Reading biographies can help students
learn about different times in history and be inspired by the great
works of others. They can see how others in history have overcome
their problems but persevered to be successful.
