Parish Center
From the desk of Father Davis
It was an awesome pilgrimage to the Holy Land! We
celebrated Masses at the churches of the Annunciation, the
Visitation, the Primacy of Peter, Mount Tabor, the Holy
Sepulcher, and on the Road to Emmaus. At each of the
holy sites, our 40-member group prayed for you, our
fellow parishioners and friends. While at the Benedictine
monastery along the Road to Emmaus, we especially
thought of the many Emmaus sisters and brothers of our
parish. We lifted them up in special prayer. We also went
to Carmel, where Sister Rosalie and Sister Mary Elizabeth
got acquainted with their roots, and renewed their religious
vows before the statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
Each step of the way, we were introduced to the history of
our faith, through the sights and sounds of the Holy Land,
its culture, the Aramaic language (which Our Lord spoke),
the Mediterranean food, the people of Israel, and the holy
sites about which the Gospels speak. The pilgrimage was
an experience of “making concrete” our faith, and touching
with our own hands, and seeing with our own eyes, the
places of biblical fame.
Among the places we visited, we went to Ein Kerem,
where we were able to go to the church of the birthplace of
Saint John the Baptist. What a fitting preparation for
today’s solemnity, which the Church around the world
celebrates this Sunday. Saint John the Baptist, as we know,
was the son of Zechariah and Elizabeth (the cousin of
Mary), and was the great precursor of the Messiah. He
heralded the coming of Christ and the dawn of salvation.
Other than Mary and Jesus, there is no other figure in our
spiritual tradition whose birthday we celebrate liturgically.
It goes to show how important Saint John the Baptist was
(and is) in the economy of the unfolding Gospel story. His
are the famous words, “behold the Lamb of God, who
takes away the sins of the world.” His also are the words,
“He (Christ Jesus) must increase; I must decrease.”
The special church in honor of Saint John’s birth is now
operated by the Franciscan Fathers, who are the custodians
of the holy places throughout the Holy Land. Saint John’s
church is built on top of the sacred grotto which has a
marker indicating the birth of the precursor of the Christ. It
was also the family’s summer house, where they spent the
hot summer days of Southern Israel. Visiting there, and all
the other places of our visit to the Holy Land, enabled our
pilgrimage travelers to get in touch with our spiritual roots.
It was the best religion class we have probably ever had.
Today, we as Church, are called upon to heed the
announcement of John the Baptist, and prepare the way of
the Lord in our own lives. To do so, we, too, must
decrease, and allow the presence and grace of Christ to
increase within our hearts.

Nativity of Saint John the Baptist
June 24, 2012
“Behold, one is coming after me;
I am not worthy to unfasten the sandals of his feet.”
— Acts 13:25
FORERUNNER OF THE LORD
The story of the conception and birth of John the
Baptist is a very human story. His aged parents,
childless, conceive a son in their old age just as Abraham
and Sarah had conceived Isaac. God’s promise of
salvation seems to include the delayed birth of very
extraordinary children!
John was, as the prophet Isaiah says, known to God
from his earliest days, fashioned in the womb of his
mother, Elizabeth, in secret, before anyone but she knew.
He was strong in spirit from before his birth, and he grew
to become the most powerful preacher and prophet. He
was the chosen forerunner of the Lord; Elijah the prophet
come back to announce the coming of the Messiah and to
prepare the people by a baptism of repentance.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
It’s midsummer day! We have the advantage of
celebrating one of the great hidden treasures of our
liturgical calendar on a Sunday this year. There are
only three “nativity” feasts on our calendar: for the
Lord, the Blessed Mother (September 8), and today’s
birth of the Baptist. Today’s date is anchored by the
Annunciation (March 25), when Mary learns not only
of her own child’s advent, but of Elizabeth’s child.
We are exactly half a year away from Christmas Eve.
There are strong traditions around this feast. Just as
the winter solstice provides a rich vocabulary for
Christmas, so does the abundance of light at
midsummer inform this celebration. Just as at
Christmas, a religious festival spills over into culture.
As summer light reaches its peak, the sun-drenched
zones of northern Europe see people staying up all
night, kindling “St. John’s fires” in the long summer
twilight. Bonfires seem to be the unifying force in all
these celebrations, kindled along the shores of the St.
Lawrence in Quebec and Montreal, with harbor
illuminations in France. You may be most interested
in the custom in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Baptist’s
own city. People there will leap into the sea between
midnight and dawn to honor John. Why not find your
way to a pool, a lake, or a sandy beach today and
plunge in to recall your baptism? It’s a tradition!

Farewell to Father Rolón
Father Alfredo Rolón, who has served as our Parochial
Vicar for seven of the past ten years, will soon be moving to
Key West to take up a new assignment at the Basilica of
Saint Mary Star of the Sea. His service here at the Church of
the Little Flower has been greatly appreciated, and our community wishes him well as he takes leave of us. His last
Spanish Mass with us will be today at 12:30pm. The liturgy
will be followed by a reception with light refreshments in
Comber Hall. If you are able, stop by and offer Father a few
words of farewell.
SYNOD
The Synod listening sessions are underway! Please be sure
to look at the schedule of remaining sessions in order to
participate in this historic process. What if you can’t attend
one of the Archbishop’s listening sessions? Don’t worry:
there are other ways to participate. Many parishes are hosting their own listening sessions between July and September. The feedback collected at these sessions will also become part of the data used by the Synod teams in creating
goals for the future of the archdiocese. Additionally, on
July 1st we will launch the online feedback form, for those
who are not able to attend a session in person. . For more

Brick Patio Update
Participation in our Patio Project is growing and literally beginning to take shape. Upon permit approval, we will
begin the installation of the Patios. Many thanks to those
who have already purchased their memorialized Bricks.
Still, I encourage others to get involved and be a part of this
beautiful community project. Please contact Wayne Carter
at the Parish Center for details.
Welcome Father Loubriel
This week our parish will welcome our new Parochial
Vicar, Reverend Harry Loubriel. Originally from a large
family in the island of Puerto Rico, Father Loubriel was
ordained for the Archdiocese of Miami in 2005. Being a
Spanish-speaker, and having recently served as the Campus Minister at Saint Thomas University and in residence
at Visitation Church in North Miami, Father Loubriel
brings meaningful experience to the service of the parishioners at the Church of the Little Flower. He will celebrate
his first Masses at Little Flower on Sunday, July 1st.
A Pilgrimage to ITALY
Soon to be finalized, Father Davis will be leading a 9-day
pilgrimage to the beautiful country of ITALY from March
15 to March 23, 2013. Scheduled visits to Assisi, Siena,
Florence, and Rome, with attendance at a papal audience in
Saint Peter’s square. Mass will be celebrated each day,
including one inside of Saint Peter’s Basilica. To get your
name on the list, please contact Wayne Carter at our Development office. Brochures will be available in a couple of
weeks.

La Natividad de san Juan Bautista
24 de junio de 2012
“Después de mí viene uno
a quien no merezco desatarle las sandalias”.
— Hechos 13:25
