Carlos Monsiváis Library

This space holds the personal archive gathered by Carlos Monsiváis. The relation
of the writer and chronicler, the author of The Rituals of Chaos, with the city, is
taken as the guiding principle of the project, generating routes suggested by blocks
and three-dimensional readings of the space. Occupying two floors, the library includes a carpet—a visual abstraction of the writer’s love for cats—created by
Francisco Toledo, the Oaxacan artist who was a lifelong friend of the writer. Over
24,000 tomes belonging to Monsiváis form part of the collection of this library
located in the west wing of the Mexico Library. || Este espacio reúne el acervo personal que formó Carlos Monsiváis. La relación del escritor y cronista de la ciudad, autor de Los rituales del caos, se toma como eje rector del proyecto al generar
recorridos direccionados por medio de bloques y lecturas espaciales en tres dimensiones. Resuelta en dos niveles, la biblioteca cuenta con un tapete —
­ como abstracción plástica del gusto por los gatos del escritor— de Francisco Toledo, artista
oaxaqueño quien a lo largo de su vida tuvo una estrecha relación con el escritor.
Más de 24 mil ejemplares del escritor forman parte del acervo para esta biblioteca
ubicada en el ala poniente de la Biblioteca México.

Spanish Cultural Center

The perception of place in space depends directly on culture. The building today
occupied by the Spanish Cultural Center, behind the Metropolitan Cathedral, dates
from the 18th century, though its history and fusion of cultures goes back to the
16th century. Since then, and over more than 500 years, the building underwent
transformations and changes of use, while its Baroque façade and historical essence were preserved, even in its foundations. The latest phase of renovation of the
premises of the Spanish Cultural Center proposed improvements to and consolidation of the spaces, which are used for a range of events and exhibitions. A
comprehensive proposal was set out for the Historical Center of the city, taking in
the whole depth of the city block, allowing passage between Guatemala and
Donceles streets through the cultural center. This public dimension of the space
permeates the whole program: exhibition areas, lecture halls, auditoriums,
offices, terraces and even an underground museum. The structure inserted into
the existing building allows large, column-free spaces with ceiling heights over
4.5 meters. Exposed concrete, wooden paneling and weathering steel with latticework and setbacks combine to reproduce the colors and depths of the façades
of the neighboring buildings. The access from Donceles street—through a series
of trapezoidal lattices—opens onto a long passageway that functions as a lobby
for the auditorium and a distributor to the exhibition areas, museum, lecture halls
and offices.

La percepción del lugar en el espacio depende de manera directa de la cultura. El
inmueble que hoy ocupa el Centro Cultural de España, ubicado detrás de la Catedral Metropolitana, data del siglo XVIII, aunque su historia y mezcla de culturas se
remonta al siglo XVI. Desde entonces, y durante más de quinientos años, el inmueble sufrió transformaciones y cambios de uso, pero su fachada barroca y esencia histórica se conservaron. La última fase de remodelación de la actual sede del
Centro Cultural de España planteó la mejora y consolidación de los espacios que se
utilizaban para diversos eventos y exposiciones. El proyecto ocupa toda una manzana que permite cruzar el complejo cultural de la calle Guatemala a Donceles.
Esta dimensión pública del espacio a partir de un núcleo central de escaleras se
permea en todo el programa; áreas de exposición, aulas, auditorios, oficinas, terrazas e incluso un museo de sitio subterráneo. La estructura que se inserta al edificio existente permite contar con grandes superficies libres de columnas y alturas
por encima de los 4.5 m. Concreto aparente, recubrimientos de madera y acero
corten con celosías y remetimientos, replican los colores y la profundidad de las fachadas de los edificios colindantes. El acceso por Donceles —
­ a través de una
serie de celosías trapezoidales— abre un largo pasillo que vestibula el auditorio y
funciona como distribuidor hacia el área de exposiciones, museo, aulas y oficinas.
