The Ignatian Corner!
TAKING SOCIAL JUSTICE BEYOND THE COMMITTEE:
ALIGNING THE PARISH SO FAITH-JUSTICE IS SEEN AS CENTRAL TO PARISH LIFE - 2
Tom Ulrich (Deputy Director of Ignatian Volunteer Corps)
SOCIAL MINISTRY PARISH LEADERSHIP TEAM
(Organizing vs. Doing Social Ministry)
ORGANIZING
DOING
1. Provide education & formation opportunities in
Catholic Social Teaching to parish.
2. Create and articulate a full “social ministry”
vision (direct service and social change) and why
it is central to the life of the community of faith
called “our parish”.
3. Relentlessly RECRUIT, RECRUIT, RECRUIT people to act on their social ministry talents,
interests & passions.
4. Create structures for doing the ministry people are
willing to take on.
5. Coordinate those structures.
6. Keep the whole parish informed (starting with the
pastor) about what’s going on in their parish,
social ministry-wise.
7. Create indicators for assessing the centrality of
social ministry in the parish and conduct
assessments on a regular basis.
8. Make sure the effectiveness of the ministry is
evaluated.
9. Articulate the connection between social ministry
action and our faith.
1. Deliver quality, compassionate ministry and be
task focused.
2. Be clear about the full mission of social ministry
(direct service and social change).
3. Always remember that the receivers' needs are
more important than my own.
4. Seek Catholic Social Teaching formation
opportunities and stay informed about ministry
related issues.
5. Tell ministry stories to fellow parishioners and
encourage/invite others to participate in the
ministry.
6. Seek and reflect on the connection between social
ministry action and faith.
“The primary role of a parish-based social ministry leadership team is to ORGANIZE the ministry, not to
DO it.”
Prison Ministry Update
Materials donated to the prison ministry
are greatly appreciated. However, we can
no longer accept dated materials, no matter
the date. The chaplains are no longer
collecting this material and only throw it away. This
includes such booklets as Magnificat. Please consider
recycling this material.
We still are in need of religious
books; especially bibles. All books
must be paperback - hardback books
are not accepted.
If you have any further questions,
please contact Anne Cerutti at [email protected].

RCIA NEEDS ADULTS AS PARISH GUIDES
A Parish Guide is to be assigned to each participant in the RCIA Faith Journey.
This person is not a sponsor or godparent. A guide attends class with the
participant and meets regularly at their convenience with the candidate or
catechumen. Their assignments go from the start of Advent until Ash Wednesday.
It is the parish guide’s responsibility to help the participant become familiar with
St. Therese as a parish family. Because we are a large parish, this role is critical to
feeling welcomed. The relationship between the guide and participant is personal and confidential. The guide
seeks the RCIA team’s help when they do not have the information or resources needed to help the participant.
For more information on the role of a Guide contact Mr. Ron Toney at 828-478-9903 or [email protected].

Saint Therese Music Ministry Alumni
Choir
Sanctuary Praise Band Accompanist, Lead
Guitar, and Bass Guitar
Sanctuary, the Contemporary Praise Band that serves
the Sunday 5:30 pm Mass, is looking for musicians to
fill a few vacant slots. The Positions of Piano
Accompanist, Lead Guitar, and Bass Guitar all need
to be filled. These are all volunteer positions.
Commitments include the majority of Sundays, a
rehearsal on Sunday afternoon approximately one
hour before Mass time, with a predominant energy
and drive to serve the Church in this contemporary
musical setting. If you would like to share your time
and musical talent in the Music Ministry of Saint
Therese, please contact any member of the Sanctuary
Praise Band or Phil Haigler, the Director of Music
Ministry for Saint Therese, 704-664-3992, ext. 106 or
[email protected].
As the Director of Music Ministry for Saint Therese,
I have met many Choir members, both current and
former. I would like to celebrate with all those
singers in a service of hymns, both old and new. This
will be a way to realize where we have grown
musically both before and after Vatican II. Over the
years, the styles have changed, the tempos have
slowed down and speeded up, and composers have
come and gone. Please look at your calendars for the
Fall season. This will be a great experience for the
participant and the spectator, honoring those beloved
melodies and those vintage Choir members. If you
are interested in participating, please contact Phil
Haigler, 704-664-3992, ext. 106 or
[email protected], or any current choir
member.
Sound Tech Crew Needed
We are looking to increase the roster of our Sound Tech Crew. We have
established a rotational schedule so that no one needs to become overcommitted. There is a simple process by which training is given: observation
during Mass, man the mixer board for Mass with supervision, then join the
scheduled rotation. There are instructional videos and documentation
available. If you are interested in finding out more information about
becoming a Sound Tech and what the commitment might be, please contact
either Phil Haigler or Bob Frohman through the Church Office at 704-6643992.
My heart, O God, is
steadfast; I will sing and
make music with all my
soul. Psalm 108:1

Confirmation at Saint Therese
Confirmation, together with Baptism and
Eucharist, form the Sacraments of Initiation
that are all intimately connected. In the
Sacrament of Confirmation, the baptized
person is "sealed with the gift of the Holy
Spirit" and is strengthened for service to the
Body of Christ. It celebrates the presence of
God's special strength and gifts in a baptized
person.
The Confirmation program stresses the
importance of not only learning Christ's
message, but also living it through
service. Service projects are completed
individually and with the class. Regular
Sunday Mass attendance is the basis of this
program, as our classroom discussion is based
on the Scriptures of the week.
The Confirmation program follows the
Diocese's recommendation that all students
have at least two years of preparation classes
in order to be confirmed. It is generally
received in 8th grade after two years (7th and
8th grade) of preparation, but High School
students who are new to the parish and have
completed Faith Formation at their previous
parish can also join us to complete the
Confirmation requirements. High School
students who have not been in Faith
Formation would contact the RCIA program
to complete their sacramental preparations.

“La Esquina Ignaciana”
St. Pedro Faber
1506-1546
“...Primer Teologo, sacerdote y
