Gospel (John 6: 41 - 51 )
The Jews murmured about Jesus because he said, "I am the bread that came down
from heaven," and they said, "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? Do we not know his
father and mother? Then how can he say, 'I have come down from heaven?'" Jesus
answered and said to them, "Stop murmuring among yourselves. No one can come to
me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day. It is
written in the prophets: They shall all be taught by God. Everyone who listens to my
Father and learns from him comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except
the one who is from God; he has seen the Father.
Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the
manna in the desert, but they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not
die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread
that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world."
Brief commentary
Today’s gospel reading continues the lengthy Eucharistic discourse found in the Fourth Gospel. Following the
sign of the multiplication of the loaves, a controversy erupts over Jesus’ identity and mission. As guardians of
sacred traditions, the elders of the synagogue of Capernaum, or perhaps from Judea, “murmured” (a word
reminiscent of the complaints of the freed Hebrews in the desert) and quarreled against Jesus. Ironically – and
this gospel employs the theme of irony repeatedly – some of the elders were unable to recognize the new and
definitive act of God among them in the person of Jesus. They could not realize that the manna, which sustained
the freed Hebrews on their arduous journey, or the bread that strengthened the prophet Elijah throughout his
ordeal, as well as the multiplication of the loaves by Jesus, were graced signs pointing to Jesus as the ultimate
source of life for the world. In the Fourth Gospel’s multi-faceted Christology, Jesus is also God’s Word that
“encamps with us” (see Jn 1:14 and today’s Responsorial Psalm). He is likewise the light, ‘way, truth, and life’,
giver of living water, good shepherd, just as he is “the bread of life that comes down from heaven” to give life to
the world. In the theme of Jesus as ‘manna from heaven’ we also find echoes of divine Wisdom as food and
drink that satisfies (see Sirach 24: 21, 23) and of the belief, found in Jewish apocryphal texts, that the messiah
would accomplish a new outpouring of manna. Indeed, for Jesus’ audience, his provocative words must have
sounded as a sure messianic claim. To his audiences, then and always, this good news calls us to “taste and see
the goodness of the Lord.” Jesus comes personally as the bread of eternal life who “loved us and handed
himself for us as a sacrificial offering to God” (second reading) for all who hunger and believe.
As the people of God who journey through the desert of
this world we do not depend on our own strength, but on
the grace of the One who journeys with us and leads us
toward the fulfillment of all of God’s promises.
♦ Jesus is the Father’s unique and definitive Word who,
as living divine communication, communicates God’s
own life to everyone who would receive him.
♦ Like those who heard him, Jesus’ compelling words
and life confronts us and call us to the belief,
entrustment and radical commitment that is faith.
♦ Our strength for our Christian journey and mission
does not come from our efforts, but from above, from
God who is Father, Son and Spirit. In the Church the
Eucharist gives life and strength to her members for
their journey and mission.

1. We do “not live by bread alone, but by every word that
comes forth from the mouth of God” (Dt. 8:3, Mt 4:4).
Am I growing spiritually through the study of the
Word of God, through the grace of the sacraments,
prayer and participation in the mission of the Church,
which is also the Sacrament and Body of Christ?
2. Like Elijah, we may at times feel tempted to give up.
How can we be better attentive and responsive to the
Holy Spirit, who encourages us to ‘get up, eat, and
continue’ forward?
3. What are concrete practical ways we can be “imitators
of God” following Jesus’ example?

Los judíos murmuraban de él, porque había dicho: "Yo soy el pan que ha bajado del
cielo." Y decían: "No es éste Jesús, hijo de José, cuyo padre y madre conocemos?
Cómo puede decir ahora: He bajado del cielo?" Jesús respondió: "No murmuréis
entre vosotros. "Nadie puede venir a mí si el Padre que me ha enviado no lo atrae; y
yo lo resucitaré el último día. Está escrito en los profetas: Todo el que escucha al
Padre y aprende, viene a mí. No es que alguien haya visto al Padre; sino aquel que ha
venido de Dios, ése ha visto al Padre. En verdad, en verdad os digo: el que cree tiene
vida eterna.
Yo soy el pan de la vida. Vuestros padres comieron el maná del desierto y murieron;
este es el pan que baja del cielo, para que quien lo coma no muera. Yo soy el pan vivo, bajado del cielo. Si uno
come de este pan, vivirá para siempre; y el pan que le voy a dar, es mi carne por la vida del mundo."
Comentario breve
En el evangelio de hoy continua el extendido discurso eucarístico del cuarto evangelio. Siguiendo el signo de la
multiplicación de los panes, estalla una controversia sobre la identidad y misión de Jesús. Los guardianes de las
sagradas tradiciones, los ancianos de la sinagoga de Cafarnaúm, o quizás de Judea, “murmuran” (una palabra
que remonta a las quejas de los Hebreos en el desierto) y disputan contra Jesús. Irónicamente – y este evangelio
emplea el tema de ironía repetidamente – algunos de los ancianos fueron incapaces de reconocer el nuevo y
definitivo acto de Dios entre ellos en la persona de Jesús. No podían comprender que el mana, que sostenía a los
Hebreos en su difícil jornada, o el pan que fortaleció a Elías, tanto como el pan que Jesús había multiplicado,
eran signos de la gracia señalando hacia Jesús como la fuente absoluta de vida para el mundo. En la cristología
multifacética del evangelio de Juan, Jesús es la Palabra/Verbo de Dios que “encampa entre nosotros” (vean Juan
1:14 and y Salmo responsorial de hoy). Así también él es la luz, el ‘camino, verdad y vida’, el dador de agua viva,
el buen pastor, igual que es “el pan bajado del cielo” para darle vida al mundo. En el tema de Jesús como ‘mana
del cielo’ también encontramos ecos de la Sabiduría divina como manjar y bebida que satisface (vean Siracides
24:21, 23); y de la creencia, encontrada en textos apócrifos Judíos, que el mesías había de lograr un nuevo
derramamiento de mana. Por cierto, para la audiencia de Jesús, sus palabras provocativas tenían que haber
resonadas como una proclamación mesiánica. A sus audiencias, ayer y siempre, sus buenas nuevas llaman a
“gustar y ver qué bueno es el Señor.” Jesús viene personalmente como el pan de eterna vida que “nos amo y se
ofreció a sí mismo como ofrenda de sacrificio a Dios” (segunda lectura) para todos hambrientos y creyentes.
Como el Pueblo de Dios que peregrina por el desierto
de este mundo, no dependemos de nuestras propias
fuerzas, sino en la gracia Del que peregrina con
nosotros y nos guía hacia el pleno cumplimiento de las
promesas de Dios.
♦ Jesús es la Palabra/Verbo único y definitivo del Padre
quien, como comunicación viviente divina, comunica la
vida misma de Dios a todos que lo reciben.
♦ Como aquellos que lo oyeron, la vida y palabras
conmovedoras de Jesús nos confrontan y llaman a la
creencia, a la confianza y al compromiso radical que es la
fe.
♦ Nuestra fuerza para la jornada y misión de la vida
cristiana no procede de nuestros esfuerzos, sino de lo alto;
de Dios quien es Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo. En la
Iglesia la eucaristía nos colma de vida y fuerza para
nuestra jornada y misión.
Para la reflexión comunitaria:
Después de una pausa breve para reflexionar en
silencio, comparta con otros sus ideas o sentimientos.
1. No vivimos “solamente de pan, sino de cada palabra que
procede de la boca de Dios” (Deuteronomio 8:3; Marcos
4:4). ¿Estoy creciendo espiritualmente a través del estudio
de la Palabra de Dios, a través de la gracia de los
sacramentos, en la oración y participación en la misión de
la Iglesia, que es también el sacramento del Cuerpo de
Cristo?
2. Como Elías, a veces estamos tentados a darnos por
vencidos. ¿Cómo podemos estar más atentos y dispuestos
a responder al Espíritu Santo, quien nos exhorta a
‘levantarnos, comer, y continuar’ nuestra jornada?
3. ¿Cuáles son algunas maneras practicas en que podemos
ser “imitadores de Dios” siguiendo el ejemplo de Jesús?
