When making the decision to place Faith Forma on on Sundays rather than Wednesdays as it had been for a couple of years, I was told that the convenience would help get families to bring their children to Mass rather than skip Mass and simply drop their children off at church for religious educa on or sacramental prepara on. My response at the me was, yes, in this culture, convenience is king, and if we make it more convenient perhaps it will help. When I saw how many families were scoo ng out of a packed liturgy to bring their kids to faith forma on my heart broke. While convenience may be king in the secular culture in which we live, the Church proclaims today that Our Lord Jesus Christ is King today, yesterday and forever. While the Church con nues to teach that it is indeed a sin to miss mass on Sunday, I am actually edified that we live in a me when such dictates are largely ignored and people who come to mass are generally there because they want to be there. This Wednesday is our parish Feast Day of St. Clement of Rome. It happens to fall this year on the day before Thanksgiving. Consequently the convergence of these two celebra ons, our Annual Thanksgiving Liturgy and the Feast of St. Clement will be celebrated on Wednesday at 7pm with a bi-lingual mass (although I will preach in English as my Spanish is s ll rather limited) that will be the “so ” opening of our Centennial Celebra on. The Grand Opening of the Centennial Celebra on will not take place un l January 1st. One of the things I love about having a mass in the middle of the week that is not a ached to a holy day of “obliga on” but s ll feels like a holy day is that the people who come really want to be there. If you come to this liturgy on Wednesday I promise that you will be rewarded. We normally give out our calendars on the First Sunday of Advent. This year however, we have very special “limited edi on” calendars for our families. The calendars are sponsored by Haught Funeral Home and I am very grateful to David Wolf the new owner for agreeing to the arrangement made by Tim Haught which required a significant increase in the adver sing budget for this year’s calendars. When the calendar was put together it became clear that an objec ve of represen ng every group in the parish was impossible with only 12 months to work with consequently what you have is a concise history of the parish. The ushers will be instructed to distribute one calendar per family on Wednesday evening. I want to thank Mary Ann Fontaine and Carol Rodriguez for their hard work in pu ng together this Centennial Year Calendar in a very short period of me with limited resources. Speaking of Carol Rodriguez, she is the honoree this year for St. Clement at the St. Jude Medal Award Ceremonies at the Cathedral of St. Jude the Apostle in St. Petersburg this/Sunday a ernoon at 3pm. It also happens to be Carol’s birthday! Bishop Lynch loves to recognize truly dedicated people who walk the walk and I am very pleased that Carol is such a key part of so much that we do here at the parish. The vitality of our parish is extremely evident to me when I am asked every year by the bishop to choose a worthy candidate for the award and the tough part is narrowing down the list to one person. As we close out the month of November it is appropriate for us to conclude the month by remembering those who have died. A memorial mass will be celebrated at Memorial Park Cemetery on S.R. 39 a.k.a. Paul Buchman Hwy just north of I-4 on Saturday 11/26/11 at 11:00am. It will be the final Mass using the current sacramentary as the new Roman Missal will be used for the first me at the 4pm Mass later that a ernoon. Peace in Christ, Page 2 Fr.
