VIEQUES EVENTS INC. was founded by Yvonne Rodriguez and the
late Judith Anne Leach 10 years ago, and continues to publish under
the sole leadership of Judy’s heirs and siblings. We are proud that
the wish of the original founders, that the magazine would become
“an asset to the community,” has come true and continues to
benefit the community and the island. The magazine survives with
only three staff members, but the success is due to the contributions of writers and photographers from the community and our
advertisers. We would also like to thank our advertisers, some of
whom have been advertising since the very first issue, for your
continued support.
VIEQUES EVENTS, INC. fue fundado hace 10 años por Ivonne
Rodríguez y la ya fenecida Judith Anne Leach, y continúa haciendo
publicaciones bajo la dirección exclusiva de los hermanos y herederos de Judy. Estamos orgullosos de que el deseo de los fundadores
originales para que la revista se convirtiera en un “activo para la
comunidad”, se haya hecho realidad y continúe beneficiando a la

Reunión de la Clase
Graduada de 1969
Soy Myrtelina Tirado-López, de Vieques, actualmente
resido en Nuevo Méjico, y soy miembro de la Clase graduada
de 1969. Un grupo de 5 compañeros de clase y esta
servidora hemos estado planificando la reunión de la clase.
La Clase 1969 fue la primera en graduarse de la Germán
Rieckehoff, por lo cual este evento será uno histórico y
memorable en Vieques.
La reunión se llevará a cabo en el Centro de Usos Múltiples en Vieques, el sábado, 30 de junio de 2012. Estaremos
celebrando en la mañana de ese mismo día una misa en
honor a 16 compañeros de clase y maestros ya fallecidos.
Tendremos un compartir la noche del viernes, pero aún no
hemos determinado el lugar. También hemos organizado un
desayuno para el domingo, 1 de julio.
Se han realizado muchos esfuerzos en el pasado para
llevar a cabo la reunión, pero fueron infructuosos debido a
muchos factores y razones en ese momento. Comencé a
recopilar información en junio 2011 con la ayuda de Norma
Santiago, de Esperanza, residente en Fajardo actualmente.
Hablamos con otros compañeros que estaban dispuestos a
donar su tiempo, esfuerzo y dinero para realizar este evento.
Fuimos muy afortunados de reclutar a Sylvia Delerme, quien
vive en Yauco, María de los Angeles Portela, que vive en
Florida, Iris Nereida Ventura del Barrio Destino y Armando
Torres del Barrio Puerto Real.
Desarrollamos una red y contactamos a 70 compañeros
y sus teléfonos. Envié 64 cartas en diciembre 16, 2011 a
miembros de la clase con los detalles y fechas de la actividad. Hasta ahora, hemos recibido 39 respuestas de éstos
indicándonos que participarán y ya han pagado la cuota de
$60 para cubrir los gastos que no han sido cubiertos por las
donaciones.
Los miembros de la clase deben responder y pagar su
cuota lo mas pronto posible. Si necesitan más información,

vez será todo un éxito y esperamos reunirnos con nuestros
amigos de la Clase 1969 de la Escuela Superior Germán

Class of 1969 Reunion
I am Myrtelina Tirado-López, from Vieques, currently
living in New Mexico, and a member of the graduated Class of
1969. A group of 5 classmates and myself have been planning a class reunion. The Class of 1969 was the first class to
graduate from German Rieckehoff High School, so this will be
a historical and memorable event in Vieques.
The reunion will take place at the “Centro de Usos
Multiples” Building in Vieques, on Saturday, June 30, 2012.
There will be a morning mass on the same date in honor of
16 deceased classmates, and teachers. There will also be a
gathering on Friday evening, but location will be determined.
A breakfast is also scheduled for Sunday, July 1st.
Many attempts were made in the past to have a class
reunion, but efforts were unsuccessful due to many factors
and reasons at the time. I started gathering information
in June 2011 with the help of Norma Santiago, originally
from Esperanza, but is living in Fajardo. We talked to other
classmates who were willing to donate time, effort, and
money to do this event. We were very fortunate to enlist
the help of Sylvia Delerme who lives in Yauco, María De Los
Angeles Portela who lives in Florida, Iris Nereida Ventura
from Barrio Destino, and Armando Torres from Barrio Puerto
Real. We developed a network and gathered 70 names and
phone numbers. I sent 64 letters on December 16, 2011 to
members of the class with details and dates. So far we have
received 39 responses from classmates indicating their
participation and their payment of $60 to cover expenses
not covered by donations.
Class members need to respond and pay the dues as
soon as possible. If you need more information, please contact me at 505-425-7799. We are confident it will be a success this time and look forward to meeing with our friends
from the Class 1969 German Rieckehoff High School! n

stas palabras del poeta del Siglo 19 Robert
Browning se convirtieron en letras de una
canción de John Lennon. Pienso en ellas
cuando visito algunos de los miembros adultos de la
familia canina de la Sociedad Protectora de Animales
de Vieques (VHS). Estos son perros que a menudo
han vivido los peores momentos, sarna, hambre, enfermedades – y quienes sorprendentemente lo han
superado todo con un pelo lustroso, ojos brillantes,
buena disposición y capacidad para amar de nuevo.
Recientemente pasé un día con dos satos, veteranos residentes de VHS, (perros playeros) Archy
y Lucky. Nos sentamos juntos en Isabel II como
parte del programa que tiene el refugio acerca de
concientizar sobre la adopción. Los seleccioné como
los “niños del afiche” para ese día para poder dar
la oportunidad a varios de nuestros perros adultos
de ser vistos. Era un placer pasar tiempo con ellos.
Tomaron su siesta, jugaron juntos, abrazados y
se veían atractivos cuando la gente se detenía a
acariciarlos. Ahora, cada vez que regreso al refugio,
se dirigen derecho hacia mí como si dijeran, “Aquí
está nuestra amiga especial. Ha venido a vernos.”
Me siento muy halagada y conmovida.
Todo el mundo ama a un cachorro. Son regordetes, tienen energía y no dejan de llamar tu atención
y exigir un poco de amor. Son los primeros y más
fáciles de adoptar. Quiero promover la adopción de
un perro adulto – incluso uno con unos pocos de
años en sus huesos.
¿Por qué los perros adultos son buenas opciones de adopción?
• Han pasado la etapa de masticar todo y de hacer desordenes típicos de cachorros.
• Entienden que es mejor hacer sus necesidades afuera.
• Jugarán cuando quieras jugar (no toda la noche).
• Pueden contenerse de sentarse o dormitar en una
almohada favorita.
• Están muy agradecidos de tener a alguien, siempre le
adorarán.
• ¿Quién dijo que no se le pueden enseñar trucos a un perro adulto? Esperan su paciente
enseñanza.
Y quizás la razón más importante:
Han esperado por mucho tiempo para
encontrar un hogar permanente. Archy, Lucky,
Chaquita, Lucky Joe, Rocky, Yoda y otros en la
Sociedad Protectora de Animales de Vieques
esperan que pases por allí, los conozcas y
decidas que uno de ellos es tu mejor elección.
Seguimos recordándoles, “lo mejor está aún
por venir.”

hese words by 19th century poet Robert Browning became lyrics for a heart-felt song by John
Lennon. I think of them when I visit some of
the adult members of our Vieques Humane Society
(VHS) canine family. These are dogs who often have
seen the worst of times—mange, starvation, abuse,
disease—and who have amazingly come through
it all with shiny coats, bright eyes, patient dispositions, and the ability to love again.
Recently, I spent the day with two VHS veteran
resident satos, (beach dogs) Archy and Lucky.
We sat together in Isabel II as part of the shelter’s
adoption-awareness program. I chose them as
“poster kids” for the day to give a couple of our adult
dogs a chance to be seen. They were a joy to spend
time with. They napped, played together, cuddled,
and looked handsome when people stopped to pat
them. Now, whenever I return to the shelter, they
come right over to greet me, as if to say, “Here’s OUR
special friend. She’s come back to see us!” I feel flattered and really touched.
Everyone loves a puppy. They are roly-poly, highenergy bundles that can’t help get your attention
and demand some love. They get adopted first and
easiest. I want to make a pitch for adopting an adult
dog — even one with a little age on its bones.
Why older dogs are good adoption choices:
• They are past the chewing and puppy-mess stages.
• They understand it’s best to do their duty outside.
• They will play when you want to play (not all night long).
• They can be content to sit on a favorite pillow and
snooze.
• They are so grateful to have a person of their own, they
will forever adore you.
• And who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?
They await your patient instruction.
And perhaps the most important reason:
They’ve been waiting for a very long time to find their
permanent homes. Archy, Lucky, Chaquita, Lucky Joe,
Rocky, Yoda, and others at
the Vieques Humane Society
are hoping you’ll stop by, get
to know them, and decide
one of them is just the right
choice for you. We keep
reminding them, “...the
best is yet to be.”

Héctor and Luz Ortiz presented the idea of cleaning and planting gardens
for the Catholic Church in Isabel II. This was made possible by their son Héctor
Ortiz and his wife Joeanna, along with their crew Tito Parrilla and Edgardo
Rosa, out of love and respect for the Catholic Church. n

l pasado 3 de marzo, JUNTOS, en unión al gobierno municipal, auspiciaron una feria de animales en la plaza. Tanto
los animales participantes como sus dueños disfrutaron
de varios puestos con información. Entre estos estaban Pesca
y Vida Silvestre, Departamento de Salud de Vieques, Sociedad
Protectora de Animales de Vieques y la Clínica de Animales Isla
Nena (INCA) con la Dra. Andrea Kaufman disponible para tratar
cualquier problema de salud en los animales. Juntos (componente educativo de la Sociedad Protectora de Animales de Vieques) rifó cuatro certificados de regalo de $50 para servicios
veterinarios y suministros. Se enfatizó en la importancia de
S.N.A.P (programa de esterilización). Por favor, aproveche esta
oportunidad gratuita o con grandes descuentos para ayudar con el problema de
la sobrepoblación de mascotas y promover la salud y el bienestar de sus perros
y gatos.

El tercer año del exitoso programa MANTAstic se llevará a cabo este verano. Diseñado para
los niños de Vieques, niños visitantes y los hijos y nietos de miembros y amigos del VCHT, este
programa ofrece una experiencia de verano única e incomparable.
Utilizando a Vieques como su campus, Mark Martin Bras, Director de Relaciones con la
comunidad, ha diseñado un programa de exploración para jóvenes de 8-15 que no podrán
conseguir en ningún otro lugar.
Habrá dos sesiones, 16-20 de julio y 23-27 de julio, durante las cuales los campistas explorarán las muchas facetas de Vieques, desde nadar, uso de kayaks, caminatas, “snorkeling”,
navegar, y aprender a respetar las cosas de la naturaleza. Este programa bilingüe promueve el
entendimiento y respeto entre niños y jóvenes de diferentes partes del mundo, a la misma vez
que se divierten aprendiendo juntos. Al final de la semana, todos se comunican perfectamente
y hacen arreglos para reunirse nuevamente el próximo verano.
El costo es de $300 por explorador y $250 cada uno si más de un niño de una misma
familia participa. El VCHT está buscando patrocinadores de forma tal que las becas para los
jóvenes locales puedan también ser otorgadas.
Este campamento incluye todos los materiales, almuerzo, transportación y la sensibilidad

The third year of the tremendously successful MANTAstic
program will take place this summer. Designed for the children
of Vieques, visiting children and the children and grandchildren
of members and friends of the VCHT, this program offers a summer experience unique and unparalleled.
Using Vieques as its campus, Mark Martin Bras, the Director
of Community Relations, has designed a program of exploration
for young people ages 8-15 which they cannot get anywhere else.
There are two sessions, July 16-20 and July 23-27, during
which time the campers will explore the many facets of Vieques,
from swimming, kayaking, nature walks, snorkeling, boating experiences, and gaining a respect for all things natural.
This bilingual program fosters understanding and respect for
children and young adults from different parts of the world as
they have fun learning together. By week’s end, everyone is
communicating perfectly and making arrangements to meet
again next summer.
The cost is $300 per explorer and $250 each if more than one child from a family attends. The
VCHT is actively seeking sponsors so that scholarships for local children can be awarded as well.
The camp experience includes all materials, lunch, transportation and the sensitivity that
Mark and his staff brings to this endeavor. Linda Vail, owner of Hacienda Tamarindo, whose

A Sparkling Evening of Music
he Fourth Annual Vieques POPs confirmed once again that
no one has as much fun as musicians - the featured stars of
the POPs, Carola Ausbury and Luis Marin, wrapped up their
talent, their warmth and their joy, tied it with a rhythmic bow
and made a gift to the audience that we will long remember.
This cabaret version of the POPS, sponsored the the Vieques Conservation and Historical
Trust, started with drinks and hor
d’oeuvres on the lawn of the W Spa
and Retreat, and then packed the
W auditorium to hear Mark Martin Bras,VCHT Director
of Community Relations, by now an experienced and
utterly charming MC, welcome the guests and introduce Carola Ausbury, Luis Marin and the “Big Band”
who came together for the first time for this special
performance.
The evening was a benefit for the VCHT, whose
mission is to foster, study, educate, protect and
conserve the environment, the archaeological and
cultural resources of Vieques. This evening supported
the children of Vieques through the MANTA program,
which serves many of Vieques’ young people.
Carola and Luis Marin delivered a perfect blend
of American classic songs and Puerto Rican and
International favorites. Broadway tunes, Gershwin,
and Miles Davis were well represented with Carola
delivering her “favorite” Round Midnight to a standing ovation. Marin, a
classical pianist very much in demand, led the band in several pure jazz
renditions, sweet and poignant, while his solo was stunning for the clarity
of the notes and the passion of his performance.
A saxophone quartette brought the house down, as did lively renditions of “A tisket, a tasket”, “Preciosa” and “Cry Me a River” sung by
Carola Ausbury.
After a champagne reception, hosted by the W Spa and Retreat, the evening
resumed with more show tunes and Big Band spectaculars. Barbara Hyland,
the President of the VCHT, took a moment to thank both, the W, Mark Martin, and
the many people who cooperated on the concert, especially Jerry Hanley, who
was in charge of the evening. n
La Cuarta Edición del Vieques Pops confirmó una vez más que nadie se divierte
tanto como los músicos – las estrellas más destacadas del evento, Carola
Ausbury y Luis Marín, envolvieron al público con su talento, calidez y alegría,
acompañados de movimientos rítmicos, que fueron un regalo a la audiencia, y
los cuales recordarán por siempre.
Esta versión de cabaret del POPS, auspiciada por el Fideicomiso de
Conservación e Historia de Vieques, comenzó con coctéles y
entremeses en los predios del W Spa and Retreat y continuó en
el auditorio lleno del W al escuchar a Mark Martin Bras, Director
de Relaciones con la Comunidad del VCHT, experimentado y
encantador Maestro de Ceremonias, donde daba la bienvenida
a los invitados y presentaba a Carola Ausbury, Luis Marín y a
la “Big Band”, quienes vinieron por primera vez a esta presentación especial.
La gala fue a beneficio del VCHT, cuya misión es fomentar,

MANTA, el cual ayuda a muchos de los jóvenes de Vieques.

La trigésima quinta versión del Festival Cultural Viequense se celebrará del 13 al 15 de abril en las facilidades del Museo Fuerte Conde
de Mirasol. Auspiciado por el Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña con
apoyo del Gobierno Municipal y el comercio local, el Festival ofrece tres
noches de actividad artístico-cultural, una feria de artesanía, libros viequenses, quioskos de bebida y comida típica en un ambiente familiar.
En esta ocasión, la actividad se dedica a los 4 mil años de cultura
viequense; treinta y cinco años del Festival Cultural y dos décadas de
trabajo cultural en el Museo Fuerte Conde de Mirasol. A través de los espectáculos artístico-musicales en tarima y las exhibiciones especiales
del museo, los participantes tendrán una mirada muy especial sobre
los procesos y las influencias culturales que han formado esta comunidad puertorriqueña.
Entre los artistas este año se incluyen a los grupos de bomba,
Restauración Cultural y Majestad Negra; el grupo de música folclórica
latinoamericana, TEPEU; la Orquestra Criolla Nacional de Puerto Rico,
MAPEYE; la música típica de Emma Colón Zayas y Son del Pueblo; el
grupo musical, Café Colao’; la TUNA de la Universidad de Puerto Rico –
Río Piedras; y Danny Rivera en concierto solidario junto a los Panderos
de Salinas.
Desde Vieques tendremos presentaciones por la Banda Municipal y
su Orquesta de Cámara; la Banda de Acero: The Islanders; y una presentación de bomba del Proyecto Educativo Oasis de Vieques. El domingo,
a partir de las 6pm, los niños podrán disfrutar del Payaso Joglar.
Durante el Festival las salas de exhibiciones del Museo estarán
abiertas al público. Habrá tres exhibiciones especiales: Fotos de
Vieques por el fotógrafo, Jake Hart; Arte para sanar, trabajos de niños
viequenses bajo la dirección de Sandra Reyes; Las tres gracias, pinturas en acrílico sobre canvas sobre el baile afro caribeño del artista

The 35th version of the Vieques Cultural Festival will take place
from April 13-15 at the Fort Count Mirasol. Sponsored by the Institute

activity, a Vieques crafts and book fair, kiosks with local drinks and
foods all in a family environment.

culture; thirty five years of Cultural Festivals and two decades of work
at the Fort Count Mirasol Museum. Through artistic-musical spectacles
on stage and special exhibits in the museum, participants will have a
special look at the processes and cultural influences that shaped the
Puerto Rican community on this island municipality.
Among the participating artists this year are Afro Caribbean dance
(Bomba) troupes, Restauración Cultural and Majestad Negra; the Latin
American folkloric music group, TEPEU; the Puerto Rican National
Creole Orchestra, MAPEYE; typical Puerto Rican music by Emma Colón
Zayas and Sound of the People; music group, Café Colao’; the TUNA of
the University of Puerto Rico; and Danny Rivera will present a solidarity
concert together will a folkloric group from the town of Salinas.
Vieques will be present on stage with the Municipal Band and its
Camara Orchestra; the Islanders steel band; the Oasis Educational
Project dance troupe; and on Sunday for children (around 6pm), we’ll
have Joglar the Clown.
During the Festival, the Fort’s museum will be showing three
special exhibits: Photos of Vieques by Jake Hart; Art for Healing, works
by Viequense children under the direction of Sandra Reyes; The Three
Graces, acrylic on canvas about Afro Caribbean dance by Puerto Rican
artist, Josean Ramos.

needs a ride to either Boston, Mass. Or
Hartford, Connecticut. Buddy will fit nicely

buddy’s expenses. He is an exceptionally warm, affectionate soul and willbe
a fine member of any family. He got on
splendidly with my dog while we were on
vieques. I could not bring him back with

Oasis Viequense is an extraordinary educational center, which offers the children of the community an
environment conducive to exploration, learning and enjoyment. The usual curriculum of reading, writing,
arithmetic, and computer skills is enhanced by special experiences which lead to the development of the individual student, at his or her own pace, emphasizing the student’s particular creative talents and interests.

rica Boulogne y Carlos “Chasti” Connelly se dedicaron a la enseñanza en el
hogar para sus dos hijos. Con los años, expandieron sus labores y han creado
un centro en el cual 17 estudiantes disfrutan de la atención especial y el
amor de la educación en Oasis. El éxito de Oasis se atribuye a la dedicación total de
sus directores y la integración total de los padres en el desarrollo de niños y niñas
contentos y saludables que disfrutan la experiencia de la educación en una escuela

rica Boulogne and Carlos “Chasti” Connely started home schooling for their
two sons, and have expanded through the years, creating a learning center
where seventeen kids now enjoy the special attention and love of “education”
at Oasis. The success of Oasis is attributed to the total dedication of its directors
and the total integration of the parents in the development of happy, healthy kids
enjoying the learning experience in a school that’s fun to go to. Thanks to the
generous donations of Israel Brache they have a school bus, and of Ricardo Boullet
for colorful kid size classroom furniture. Classes may be held on campus as well
as at the beach or on the big island of Puerto Rico during the many field trips. The
emphasis is “hands on experience.” And the kids are thriving.
The latest endeavor of Oasis is the revival of the rich musical tradition of our
ancestors. Culture and history come alive. The music of Africa vibrates in the
Caribbean and the spirit of a new generation is uplifted tuning in to the music of
vibrating drums, exploring rhythm and keeping joy and passion for life pulsing like
a force of nature: BOMBA drumming! BOMBA dancing! BOMBA singing! The Oasis
kids are totally focused, elated and radiant.
Bomba is a connection between the drummer and the dancer. The drummer
must closely follow the dancers’ movements and provide a synchronized beat.
Thus, it is a true collaboration of the students working together, drummers and
dancers, as a team but using their individual acquired skills.
Join Oasis for “Sunset at Sunbay Bomba Fest.” This Fundraiser will be held on
Saturday, April 28th. Arenamar Cafe will be serving the best in local cuisine, including appetizers and desserts. There will be a special presentation by the Oasis group
and their invited guests. Feel the beat and talk to the drums: Baila Bomba!
