Fall is off to a great kick off! We had an awesome turn out
for Student/Teacher conferences; our next conference date is
November 18th. We are also working diligently on our school
improvement plan. This year, as an entire school, we are working
on literacy and numeracy for ALL students. Be sure to ask your
student how teachers are incorporating a variety of reading and
mathematics activities into the classroom and CTEC shop.
Looking ahead to May…it may seem too early, but we have
increased our graduation rate to the point of growing out of
Monarch’s auditorium for the graduation ceremony. Therefore,
we have booked Fairview’s auditorium and have already
begun plans for the big event. Mark May 21st, 10:00 A.M. on
your calendar.
The district counselors will be visiting our campus for their
November meeting. This is a great opportunity for attending high
schools to see our CTEC programs and to learn more about high
school programming that we offer at Arapahoe Campus.
Also, mark your calendar for the Ribbon Cutting of our newly
completed building. January 3rd, 2011 will be an Open House
along with celebrating 30 years for The Parent Program that is
now located on our campus. More details will follow.
Do One Thing (DOT): Recently the entire school was
able to view a PowerPoint delivered by ACE. The premise
was doing one thing for the environment. Several students and
teachers will be looking for ways to make our campus more
energy efficient. This activity supports our solar panels that
were installed a year ago.
Latino Night and SIT (School Improvement Team) will be
joining forces this year. The meetings will be the third Tuesday
of each month making our first meeting on October 19th, 5:007:00 P.M. A light Mexican salad will be served. The first hour
will be spent on our school improvement and the second hour
is dedicated to a specific topic. This month the topic is college.
Everything you want to know about your student attending
college. Please plan on attending this event, everyone is welcome!
New this year…our school newsletter will be printed every
other month. This change is an effort to get information out to
you with more notice before the events happen. Let us know
how we are doing.

Hello everyone, and happy fall! Hopefully everyone is back in
the swing of things and enjoying their time back on our campus.
It is a busy time in the counseling office!
n Seniors, if you haven’t already done so, please be sure to
make an appointment with Mr. Akiyama or Amy Bus for your
senior meeting and graduation check. Parents are encouraged to
attend these very important meetings. Please call Mary Parrish to
schedule an appointment at 720-561-5220. Reminder: Seniors
who are planning to graduate at the end of their 7th semester
must submit a Petition for Early Graduation that is due to your
counselor by October 15, 2010.
n Juniors and sophomores, it is also a good idea to meet with
your counselor for academic planning; it’s never too early to start
thinking about graduation!
n It is now time to be thinking about second quarter! Please
take a look at your upcoming schedule and check it for accuracy.
For example: Are you scheduled for the correct number of
classes; correct level of coursework; and/or correct courses
needed for graduation? If you find that your 2nd quarter schedule
is not correct or you do not have access to a computer, please talk
you’re your counselor in the next couple of weeks to make any
Add/Drops needed by October 15, 2010. Please remember that
once the 2nd quarter begins, student initiated schedule changes
will end, so now is the time to look at you schedule of classes and
make those changes you want.

A Student Resource Guide
BVSD’s Community Opportunities for Youth Directory now has a
new name: Community Connections: A Student Resource Guide.
The guide can be found at www.bvsd.org/guide. This annual BVSD
publication is filled with youth-oriented activities and services offered
by individuals and organizations in the community. Categories include
tutoring, athletics, health & support services and the arts. Paper copies
can be found at schools beginning in mid-September. You can also
request a copy in English or Spanish from Marla Riley at 720-5615250, [email protected].

The new Post Graduate Center is Open!
n Our new Post Grad. Center opened last week, it is beautiful,
please come in and see what the Center has to offer your student.
Students can use the PGC to explore careers, colleges, tech.
schools, and anything related to their post high school experience.
n Our campus use Naviance, an on-line computer program
that is designed to help students with the many options of postsecondary planning. This valuable tool provides our students
with information related to their current academic plan, personal
goals, interests, and aptitudes, plus help them explore the many
options (college, careers, work, military, apprenticeships, trade
schools, etc.) available to them after high school.

password, and training in how to take full advantage of this
wonderful educational tool. Students who are new to our
school and have not been introduced to Naviance are now being
identified so that they can be trained in the upcoming month in

ARE RECYCLABLE.
The students in the Arapahoe Campus High School took a
survey with a table two weeks ago. We made l9 boxes and 37
posters for recycle. This project is very good for the world.
We are happy and interested in this project.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is released in
rock, soil, and water from the natural decay of uranium. While

can build up to dangerous levels inside buildings. Even though
you can’t see, smell, or taste radon, a high level in your home
can have serious consequences. It is especially important to test
your home since that is where you spend most of your time.

High levels of radon in homes usually come from the surrounding
soil. The gas enters buildings through cracks and openings on
the lower levels of the home. Hot spots include basements, firstfloor rooms, and garages, but radon can be found anywhere in
the house.
Test for radon to protect your family.
The U.S. Surgeon General recommends that all homes in the
U.S. be tested for radon. Testing your house for radon is easy to
do, and during the fall and winter is the ideal time to test. If your
house has a radon problem, you can take simple steps to fix it.

Si bien la experimentación es una parte de la adolescencia,
el abuso de sustancias por adolescentes puede conducir a una

While experimenting is a part of adolescence, teen substance
abuse can lead to a lifetime of challenges. Many see experimentation
with drugs and alcohol as a rite of passage. Many parents recall
their own substance use experiences and feel that they turned out
just fine, so why “overreact”? This argument can also be made for
drunk driving; I drove after a few beers and was fine, so what’s
the big deal? Substance use is very much like spinning a Roulette
wheel. For some they may experiment a little bit, continue to do
well at home and in school and go on to successful fulfilling lives.
For others, however, substance abuse can alter their life path,
involving them in criminal behavior, dangerous situations, and a
lifetime of addiction. As parents it is very difficult to know what
road your child will end up on. That is why it is important for
all parents to encourage abstinence and discuss their concerns
frequently with their children. Research consistently shows that
when children know that their parents disapprove of drug and
alcohol use, they are less likely to engage in these behaviors.
There are many challenges for parents, however, in terms of
how to effectively parent when you suspect that your child is using
drugs; When is it OK to search my child’s room? Should I get
my child drug-tested and how do I even go about that? Does our
drinking at home send the wrong message? If my child is doing
well in school, does that mean that I don’t need to worry? How do
I know if my child has a serious problem?
On Monday, October 25, from 7:00-8:30pm, at the Meadows
Branch Library in Boulder, there will be a free workshop entitled:
“How to Parent When Your Child is Using Drugs”
This will be an opportunity for parents to learn about the
most effective parenting strategies and treatments for a child
experimenting with drugs and/or alcohol. There will be two Certified
Addictions Counselors, with expertise working with adolescents,
as well as an educational consultant who helps families find
treatment resources, available to answer your questions. For more

Tajik Educators Welcomed by Arapahoe Campus
Students in literature classes at Arapahoe High School had a
chance to make connections to their reading of The Kite Runner,
The Breadwinner and a Thousand Splendid Suns which take place
in Afghanistan when they greeted visitors from the bordering
country of Tajikistan.
On Thursday, September 30, seven Tajik administrators and
educators visited our campus to learn about our programs. Ms.
Bludorn hosted an information session with the visitors and Ms.
Haisley took them on a tour of our campus including academic
classes and our CTEC programs.
Thank you to Hector Ibarra in Ms. Slater’s class for making
beautiful posters in Tajik and Russian and English, and to the
Graphic Communications students for the personalized note pads
for each guest. Thank you to all the students who were REAL
(Respectful, Excellence, Achieving, Leaders) when the guests
were on our campus.
Our visitors loved the Early Childhood Education Center and hope
to bring a specialist to their country to train their educators who work
with young children. A trip into Cosmetology to see Ms. Hanley’s
second year students coloring and styling hair was a high point.
At lunch, visitors joined Ms. Soucek’s and Ms. Puska’s students
for a round table discussion about the differences between high
school life in the United States and in Tajikistan. Thanks to
Rosa for making fabulous sub sandwiches for our guests in our
beautiful cafeteria!
The day ended in the evening with a celebration of American
culture at Naropa organized by Ms. Soucek. Americans and Tajiks
participated in Square Dancing and Native American dance, but
it was Ms. Sarah Huth’s dance group that rocked the house with
a Hip Hop performance!

Manager Marsha Moritz, who passed away last week after a long and valiant struggle
with cancer. Marsha was a longtime advocate of educating parents about how to support
healthy youth development and, without her, the Thrive Update newsletter would not have
been created. Also among her numerous contributions to BVSD, she co-founded the Parent
Engagement Network and was chair of the Thrive Handbook committee. She will be
missed by all of us.

Hello everyone, I would like to thank all the parents for their
participation in our first Parent Teacher Conference of the 201011 school year. It was very nice to see all of you communicating
with the teachers and making sure we are all on the same page
regarding your student grades and attendance.
We are planning a trip to Regis University in Denver this
Saturday, October 16th to attend the fifth annual LaTeenA
conference. Please encourage your daughters to attend this
conference.
I also want to remind you that our first Latino Night is this
coming Tuesday, October 19th from 5-7 PM. We will be discussing
credits and attendance, and will also assign you a password to
access Infinity Campus, so you can check your student grades and
attendance. Please come and join us for dinner and conversation
with administrators and counselors.
Finally, we will have a dental screening scheduled for the entire
student body on the morning of November 3rd. Please make sure
your student attends that day, and make sure your student has
returned the parental permission slip you received in the mail, or
brings it with him/her that day, as your student will not receive
the screening without your signature.
