St. Dominic Catholic Church Houston, TX Dear Friends in St. Dominic. Proceeds of this event will go towards the construction of our parish life center. Let us support this big event of our community by our presence and involvement. Next week-end (Oct 17th & 18th ), we shall take up a second collection for the propagation of the faith. We are invited today to reach out and help build the Church throughout the Missions, in the most remote areas across our world. Your prayers and generous gift to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith help the work of priests, religious and lay leaders throughout the Missions who offer the poor practical help and the experience of God’s love and mercy, His hope and peace. Please keep the Missions in your daily prayers. Please be as generous as you can! On October 24th & 25th , everyone will be given the opportunity to visit and walk through our construction site. Everyone will also have the chance to write your names/family names on the steel posts and frames of our parish life center before these will be covered. Please mark your calendar and plan to participate! This week-end’s scriptures teach us that true wealth goes beyond money. When we say that someone is wealthy--- what are we really saying? Wealth implies abundance. But there are different kinds of abundance, different kinds of wealth. This rich young man who wanted to follow Jesus had an abundance of material goods. That is what we normally think about when we use the term wealth. But Jesus is telling us in the Gospel that material wealth can often be an obstacle to a more important type of wealth, a more satisfying type of abundance. The rich young man had many possessions, but he did not have eternal life; he did not have the deep sense of meaning, purpose, and interior peace that he longed for. There was something essential, something in his heart, that material wealth could not satisfy. And so he came to Jesus, the miracle-worker, the rabbi everyone was talking about, to find what was missing. And Jesus tells him. First, he reminds the young man of the importance of moral wealth by reviewing the basic commandments. To be truly fulfilled as human beings, we must fill our souls with virtue, with an abundance of repeated choices that reflect moral integrity, not moral decadence. This is the necessary foundation for the next and most important kind of wealth: spiritual wealth. Jesus points the young man towards spiritual wealth by inviting him to "Come, follow me." Friendship with Jesus Christ is the "treasure" in heaven, the spiritual wealth that alone will satisfy our deepest yearnings for happiness, the abundance of wisdom that this Sunday’s First Reading speaks so eloquently about. But that friendship requires humility and obedience, because Jesus Christ is more than a buddy; he is not just Joe the Plumber: he is God. We must be willing to trust him, obey him, follow him, even if it means giving up material wealth, popularity, and pleasure, in order to discover the true wealth that our souls desire. Sincerely yours in Christ Rev. But, we are all called to be generous with all our gifts. Not just the ones we pick and choose, but all our gifts: our time in prayer to God, our talent in participating in parish ministries and our treasure supporting our local parish and other charities. We may convince ourselves that it is the poor who are favored. In today’s readings, we discover that material wealth alone does not keep us from discipleship. We will see that there are other gifts more important than material wealth, but even so, it is how we use our gifts that matters most. Today’s scriptures point to the value of the gifts of wisdom, trusting in God, and letting our actions reflect the love of God from within. It is not gold that causes us to fall, but rather the desire for gold above all other things. From the readings in Wisdom and Hebrews, we find the source of God’s gifts in our lives. Wisdom is more valuable than worldly possessions. In Hebrews, we are challenged to look at our own values and admit honestly what controls our lives. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION How did the church dealt with “daily sins” in the first five centuries? As devout and observant as they were, our early fathers and mothers in faith could not have been all that different from us. Maybe they looked the other way when the grocer threw an extra fig in the shopping basket, or had a wandering eye for the widow next door, or had a taste for too much ale, or didn’t let the truth get in the way of a good story. First of all, there was the Eucharist. The words are familiar: “This is the cup of my blood, poured out for the forgiveness of sin.” Especially by participating in Communion from the cup, forgiveness was achieved. Eucharist was, and remains, the sacrament of reconciliation par excellence, the sign and source of unity with Christ. There were other helps along the way: “fraternal” correction, or the course corrections we offer one another in love, prayer, fasting, works of mercy. St. Augustine listed endurance of suffering, forgiveness of insults, and added the praying of the Lord’s Prayer in the liturgy. He felt that the public praying of the Our Father on Sunday and its daily use in private prayer was an essential remedy and the reason why everyone was not a candidate for canonical penance. Inherited from Augustine’s practice, the Lord’s Prayer in our Communion Rite still has the same purpose, preparing us for receiving and becoming the Body of Christ.
