St. Anthony of Padua
(1195-1231)
The gospel call to leave everything and
follow Christ was the rule of Anthony’s
life. Over and over again God called him
to something new in his plan. Every time
Anthony responded with renewed zeal
and self-sacrificing to serve his Lord Jesus more completely.
His journey as the servant of God began
as a very young man when he decided to join the Augustinians
in Lisbon, giving up a future of wealth and power to be a servant of God. Later, when the bodies of the first Franciscan
martyrs went through the Portuguese city where he was stationed, he was again filled with an intense longing to be one
of those closest to Jesus himself: those who die for the Good
News.
So Anthony entered the Franciscan Order and set out to
preach to the Moors. But an illness prevented him from
achieving that goal. He went to Italy and was stationed in a
small hermitage where he spent most of his time praying,
reading the Scriptures and doing menial tasks.
The call of God came again at an ordination where no one was
prepared to speak. The humble and obedient Anthony hesitantly accepted the task. The years of searching for Jesus in
prayer, of reading sacred Scripture and of serving him in poverty, chastity and obedience had prepared Anthony to allow
the Spirit to use his talents. Anthony’s sermon was astounding
to those who expected an unprepared speech and knew not
the Spirit’s power to give people words.
Recognized as a great man of prayer and a great Scripture and
theology scholar, Anthony became the first friar to teach theology to the other friars. Soon he was called from that post to
preach to the Albigensians in France, using his profound
knowledge of Scripture and theology to convert and reassure
those who had been misled by their denial of Christ's divinity
and of the sacraments.
After he led the friars in northern Italy for three years, he
made his headquarters in the city of Padua. He resumed his
preaching and began wrtiting sermon notes to help other
preachers.
Comment:Anthony should be the patron of those who find
their lives completely uprooted and set in a new and unexpected direction. Like all saints, he is a perfect example of
turning one's life completely over to Christ. God did with Anthony as God pleased—and what God pleased was a life of
spiritual power and brilliance that still attracts admiration
today. He whom popular devotion has nominated as finder of
lost objects found himself by losing himself totally to the
providence of God.

like the stars. In his providence Christ conceals them in a hidden place that they may not shine before others when they
might wish to do so. Yet they are always ready to exchange
the quiet of contemplation for the works of mercy as soon as
they perceive in their heart the invitation of Christ."

News From The Streets…
Healing

Today we spotted Wendell Right (not his real name) lying on
the ground next to a gas station located off I-45 and Scott
Street. He could barely raise his head and speak to us. Wendell began to explain that he is not really homeless, but has a
praying wife and a home in Katy, Texas. Every once in a while
he’ll binge on drugs, and today was one of those days. We
found him (for the second time) in great pain. As he spoke he
began to hold his chest, and cry out to God explaining that he
did not want to die like this. After prayer we suggested that
he go home, and to once and for all turn his back to drugs. He
agreed, but asked for additional prayer and strength to say
no!! The team prayed, and once we finished he said “this is
bizarre!! My chest pain is gone”. He jumped up and began to
praise God and explain that he was going home. We told him
we never want to see him on the streets again, and look forward to a great reunion with him in heaven. What a wonderful
thing it is to witness God’s healing touch on the streets.

PRIORIDAD DEL AMOR
SOBRE LA LEY
Lucas 7, 36-8,3.- En aquel tiempo un fariseo le rogó a Jesús que
comiera con él, y, entrando Jesús en la casa del fariseo, se puso
a la mesa. Había en la ciudad una mujer pecadora pública,
quien al saber que estaba comiendo en casa del fariseo, llevó un
frasco de alabastro de perfume, y poniéndose detrás, a los pies
de él, comenzó a llorar, y con sus lágrimas le mojaba los pies y
con los cabellos de su cabeza se los secaba; besaba sus pies y
los ungía con el perfume. Al verlo el fariseo que le había invitado, se decía para sí: Si éste fuera profeta, sabría quién y qué
clase de mujer es la que le está tocando, pues es una pecadora.
Jesús le respondió: Simón, tengo algo que decirte. Él dijo: Di,
maestro. Un acreedor tenía dos deudores: uno debía quinientos
denarios y el otro cincuenta. Como no tenían para pagarle, perdonó a los dos. ¿Quién de ellos le amará más? Respondió Simón: Supongo que aquel a quien perdonó más. Él le dijo: Has
juzgado bien, y volviéndose hacia la mujer, dijo a Simón: ¿Ves
a esta mujer? Entré en tu casa y no me diste agua para los pies.
Ella, en cambio, ha mojado mis pies con lágrimas, y los ha secado con sus cabellos. No me diste el beso. Ella, desde que entró, no ha dejado de besarme los pies. No ungiste mi cabeza con
aceite. Ella ha ungido mis pies con perfume. Por eso te digo que
quedan perdonados sus muchos pecados, porque ha mostrado
mucho amor. A quien poco se le perdona, poco amor muestra.
Y le dijo a ella: Tus pecados quedan perdonados. Los comensales empezaron a decirse para sí: ¿Quién es éste que hasta perdona los pecados? Pero Él dijo a la mujer: Tu fe te ha salvado.
Vete en paz. Juana, mujer de Cusa, un administrador de Herodes, Susana y otras muchas que les servían con sus bienes. Reflexión.- Los textos bíblicos de hoy exigen una decisión de nosotros, porque nos muestran dos alternativas: la actitud o mentalidad del hombre viejo y del hombre nuevo. El hombre viejo es
el hombre de la ley – lo encontramos en el fariseo del evangelio. El hombre nuevo u hombre pascual es el hombre del amor –
se nos presenta en la pecadora del Evangelio.
El hombre viejo es el hombre de la ley. A partir de la ley de
Moisés, los fariseos han inventado un catálogo de prácticas y
prohibiciones. Es tan ingenioso que basta con respetarlo para
estar en regla con Dios. No interesa ya que el corazón esté endurecido, ni la fe apagada. Lo único importante son los gestos y
ritos. Así la fidelidad a la letra hace olvidar el espíritu de la ley.
En consecuencia, la actitud del fariseo es la de soberbia, de autocomplacencia y de desprecio hacia los demás. Él no necesita a
Dios, ni su misericordia ni su justificación. Porque él se cree
limpio de todo pecado y se da como justificado por el mérito de
sus buenas obras propias. Y así queda ante Dios como pecador
que no es perdonado.
Pero, ¿qué tiene que ver todo esto con nosotros? Me parece que
quiere llamar nuestra atención sobre un peligro inherente de la
vida cristiana: el formalismo, el legalismo, la rutina religiosa.
Es el peligro de toda religión: realizar fiestas y ritos, pero sin
cambiar en nada la vida de cada día, sin cambiar en nada la
actitud frente a Dios y a los demás. Así es como el cristianismo
muere. El mayor en enemigo de la Iglesia no es el odio, ni la
persecución. Al contrario, estas adversidades son un estímulo y
una ocasión para renovarnos. Tampoco lo es el pecado, porque
todo pecado puede convertirse en una falta bendita, gracias al
arrepentimiento y el perdón. El mayor enemigo del cristianismo
es la rutina. Ella se insinúa sin que nos demos cuenta. Es ella la
que reseca el corazón y corrompe los mejores anhelos. La rutina
nos hace rezar sin respeto, nos hace asistir a misa sin gozo, sin
acción de gracias y sin provecho. Nos hace venir a la Iglesia
con el corazón cerrado y nos obliga a marcharnos tal como hemos llegado.
Sin embargo, creemos que estamos asegurando nuestra salvación yendo a misa todos los domingos. Pero de nada nos servirá
el haber asistido a misa, si al salir no ha cambiado nada en
nuestro corazón, en nuestra conducta, en nuestras costumbres.
¿Para qué comulgar con el Cuerpo de Cristo y encontrarse en Él
con todos sus miembros, nuestros hermanos, si al salir quedamos guardando rencor contra uno de ellos, si no nos amamos un
poco más que antes, si no nos sentimos más cerca unos de
otros? El hombre nuevo es el hombre del amor. Lo encontramos en la pecadora del Evangelio. Ella se sabe pecadora y se
reconoce como tal ente Jesús. Y por su gran amor el Señor le
perdona: “Por eso te digo, sus muchos pecados están perdonados, porque tiene mucho amor”. Vivir el amor, no cumplir la
ley, es la característica del hombre nuevo. La ley es la frontera:
el amor es el horizonte de la vida cristiana. San Agustín lo expresa en forma concisa: “¡Ama y haz lo que quieras!” Pues, el
que ama, sólo puede querer el bien. El amor le basta. El amor le
es todo.
Pero, ¿sabemos nosotros realmente amar? Muchas veces creemos amar, y nos hacemos más que amarnos a nosotros mismos.
¿En qué consiste, entonces, el auténtico amor? Amor, en su
esencia, es entregarse al otro y a los otros. Amor, en primer
lugar, no es sentir, no es un paso instintivo, sino la decisión de
nuestra voluntad de ir hacia los demás y entregarnos a ellos. El
amor es un camino con dirección única: parte siempre de mí
para ir a los demás. Cada vez que tomo en posesión algo o a
alguien para mí, dejo de amar, pues dejo de dar. Camino a contramano Más ama, quien más se da. Si queremos amar sin límites, hemos de estar dispuestos a dar nuestra vida, a favor del
otro y de los otros. “Nadie tiene mayor amor que el que da la
vida por sus amigos”, nos dice Jesús en sus despedidas (Jn 15,
13)
Queridos hermanos, si queremos ser perdonados, ahora y al
final de nuestra vida, tenemos que amar. Pidamos por eso, a
Jesucristo, que encienda en nuestro corazón este fuego del amor
que hace auténtico y grande nuestra existencia – igual que la
suya. ¡Qué así sea! En el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo. Amén.
