KEEP PRAYING
St. Monica, whose feast we
celebrate in August, is often
known as "the persistent
mother." She watched her
oldest son, Augustine, turn his
back on his Christian faith.
Monica was exasperated. For
years she gave up talking
directly to her son on the
advice of a local bishop, who
told her that it was better to
talk to God about Augustine
then to Augustine about God.
The mother never gave up
praying for her son. Eventually
Augustine gave up his wild
ways, was baptized, and later
ordained and named bishop of
Hippo. St. Augustine went on
to become one of the Church's
greatest scholars.
Today's readings address the
importance of persistent
prayer. Abraham, in spite of
trepidation that he is
bothering the Lord, continues
to ask about the fate of Sodom
and Gomorrah. Jesus, in
Luke's Gospel, tells his
disciples to "ask and you will
receive; seek and you will find;
knock and the door will be
opened to you" (Luke 11:9).
This is our charge: keep
praying.

Welcome
A Message from Msgr. Joe
Gathering here as we do every Sunday, we know that our loving God
listens to our prayers. Today’s scriptures reaffirm that faith in our
a en ve God. Let us take me today during our worship together to
review our prayer lives to see what things we truly want to bring
before our loving God.
Perseverance in Prayer: How vivid Genesis’ portrayal of Abraham’s
prayerful intercession or is it marketplace haggling?: Fi y? How about
forty-five? Can I get you down to forty? Thirty? Maybe twenty? Could
you possibly make it ten? How engaging Jesus’ “Parable of the
Persistent Friend.” Disturbing the sleeping household on the upper
floor, disrup ng the animals typically boarded on the lower levels, the friend pesters the
householder out of bed and into the kitchen for bread, one of the very things Jesus teaches
us to pray for in the Lord’s Prayer.
Progress in Prayer: Besides how to pray, Jesus teaches what prayer really is: not imposing
our will on God, but opening ourselves to God’s will for us. What we want is not always what
we need. Remember, despite Abraham’s persevering prayer, Sodom and Gomorrah were
destroyed anyway! If you who are wicked know how to give good gi s to your children, how
much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him? Who among
us would think to ask first for that gi ?
So Jesus gives his disciples—and us—not simply a formula to say, though the Lord’s Prayer
remains the Chris an prayer, but a window into the heart of a God who can be trusted to do what is best for us; and a model for orien ng
our whole being, like Jesus, to God’s praise and our neighbor’s service. In teaching us contempla ve prayer, Jesus again schools us in
ac ve, prac cal charity!
Next Sunday, July 31, our Religious Educa on Program’s Summer Academy will begin. I am grateful to all who those who are dedica ng
some of their summer to sharing with our children and young people the great gi of faith. As a parish community and more importantly
a parish family, all of us are called to assist the parents of our parish as the primary teachers of their children. Whether that takes the
giving of our me and volunteering in our Religious Educa on Program or li ing our catechists, parents and children in prayer, all are
called to be an ac ve part of our faith forma on program. Let us remember all involved in the Religious Educa on Summer Academy and
pray that for child, catechist and parent, it may be an opportunity to grow in the wonderful gi of faith in response to God’s invita on
through Jesus to be united with him.
I also invite you to remember in prayer, the youth of the world who will be gathering with our Holy Father, Francis, for World Youth Day
2016 in Krakow, Poland from July 25 to July 31. Kait Meyer, our youth ministry, is traveling to World Youth Day with a group from our
diocese. May it be a powerful opportunity for young people to experience the love of God in Jesus Christ.
A brief construc on update. Demoli on work con nues in our new Parish Center (Convent building). The second floor has been
completed and work has now begun on the first floor removing all plaster down to the studs. The work on the new hea ng system and
boiler for our parish school building and parish center is proceeding according to schedule. The school building remains open all summer
even though it’s a bit more difficult to find the entrance. Finally, this past week, work was begun to clean, repair and maintain our parish
organ. A significant number of pipes have been removed and upon cleaning will be reinstalled and then the next division will be removed.
If you have any ques ons, Ernie is able to discuss in more detail this maintenance project. This maintenance and preserva on of the
church organ is being financed through the generosity of you and your support of the Diocesan Endowment Campaign. Thirty percent of
each dollar pledged to this campaign is returned to our parish. Thank you for your generous support.
We con nue to pray for one another, especially our children during their summer vaca on. Have a great week! God bless!

Our Holy Father Speaks
The Holy Father sent
a video message to
Poland, for the
upcoming
celebra on of the
31st World Youth
Day, which will offer him the occasion to
meet in Krakow with young people from all
over the world and with the "beloved Polish
people".
Pope Francis thanked young Polish people
for preparing for this event, especially in
prayer, and conveyed to them his embrace
and his blessing, which he extended to the
young of all Europe, Africa, America, Asia
and Oceania, and to their countries, their
desires and their steps towards Krakow, so
that it may be "a pilgrimage of faith and
fraternity". He asked the Lord Jesus to grant
them the grace of experiencing in
themselves His words, "Blessed are the
merciful, for they will receive mercy".
"I am very anxious to meet you and to offer
to the world a new sign of harmony, a

languages, peoples and cultures, but all
united in the name of Jesus, Who is the face
of Mercy". Addressing the sons and
daughters of Poland, the Pope con nued:
"For me it is a great gi of the Lord to visit
you. You are a na on that throughout its
history has experienced so many trials, some
par cularly difficult, and has persevered
through the power of faith, upheld by the
maternal hands of the Virgin Mary. I am

Worship and Sacramental Life
We, the Catholic Community of Saint Paul in Princeton,
honor our tradition of welcoming God’s
sons and daughters from different cultures and backgrounds to hear
and live the Good News of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Baptized and formed into the People of God, we continue
to grow in the Apostolic Tradition of Worship, Word and Service.
Worship through our participation in the Eucharist and celebration of
sacraments;
Word, in our commitment to Catholic identity through Scripture and catechesis; and
Service, as disciples who share God’s love with all by working together
for peace and justice to advance the coming of the Kingdom of God.

Spiritual Direction
Tending the sacred rela onship
Spiritual direc on is an on-going
rela onship between a “directee” (person
seeking) and a “director” (qualified person
giving guidance) wherein a sacred space is
created for the explora on and deepening
of the spiritual life. Through conversa on
and reflec on, the directee becomes more
a uned to God's presence and can
respond more fully to the Divine as it is
revealed in all areas of life. Direc on
typically takes place in a confiden al oneon-one se ng and may include some
form of prayer experience to increase
awareness of the movement of the Spirit
in the directee’s life. If you are interested

A Message from John Michael McGuire
As you are reading this, I am down in Camden at a music fes val. My

There are so many ways that we are divided. However, the Catholic Church is indeed
universal. You can go to any Catholic Church in the world, and even if you don’t understand

yet in the wisdom of over two millennia of being a Church we recognize that each culture

are certain things that remain because of their deep roo ng in the Church such as the words Amen, Alleluia, Kyrie Eleison and Hosanna
that come from Aramaic, Hebrew, and Greek from the early church. Let’s pray then that in a world of division we can appreciate the
beauty and similarity that has united the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church since the me of the Apostles, and the diversity

St. Paul Parish is grateful for your stewardship commitment of me, talent and treasure to
the Catholic Community of Princeton. Our parish appreciates those who have taken
advantage of our on-line giving program. In an effort to modernize our Electronic Funds
Transfer Program while reducing fees and saving me, our parish has decided to switch
our processing to Parish Giving. Parish Giving is a leading provider of secure, user-friendly
Electronic Funds Transfer systems specializing in religious and charitable organiza ons.
Hopefully, you will find that using the Parish Giving program will be more convenient.
Importantly, you maintain full control over your account so that you can change your
offering as needed. You will be able to generate a giving report, contribute to Christmas,
Easter and other special collec ons, and change the method and/or ming of the billing.
Our hope is that you will consider enrolling in this secure giving method. In the weeks
ahead we will be launching this program and assis ng those already enrolled in our
electronic giving program to switching their accounts to Parish Giving. More informa on is
available on our parish website: www.stpaulsofprinceton.org.
