• BCN (2012): Passengers +2.2%; capacity +1.1%. Barcelona reaches 35 million passengers in 2012, its all time record high. Barcelona is (alongside Bilbao) the only Spanish airport of 1M passengers or more that grows in 2012. The passenger growth of 4.5% in the first nine months (6% in summer) of the year is partially offset in the fourth term with a passenger decrease of 5%. The yearly growth was driven primarily by European traffic (+16%), while Spanish traffic (-10%) has been falling since February 2012. Intercontinental traffic stagnates in the last quarter, but receives an Asian bias with the cancellation of some American flights for the winter season and the opening of more frequencies to the Middle East. • SPAIN (2012): Passengers -9.6%; capacity -8.4%. Spanish traffic decreases, especially with MAD (-18%) and PMI (-11%). The decline is worse in the fourth term, with decreases in passengers and capacity of 16% and 17% respectively. Persisting imbalance between supply (capacity) and demand (passenger) which leads to a low load factor. • EUROPA (2012): pasajeros +9,7%; capacidad +9,1%. • EUROPE (2012): Passengers +9.7%; capacity +9.1%. The European market is the engine of growth for Barcelona, especially traffic with the major European airports. Healthy and growing market, although showing signs of fatigue in the fourth term, with growth of only 1% and a slight decline (-2%) in capacity. Growth led by low cost airlines such but non-Spanish legacy carriers also contribute to the total growth. • INTERCONTINENTAL (2012): pasajeros +3,4%; capacidad -0,9%. • INTERCONTINENTAL (2012): Passengers +3.4%; capacity -0.9%. Market growth. Progressive rebalancing between capacity and passengers. Significant increase of traffic with the Middle East, both O&D passengers and (especially) in connection towards Asia. Meanwhile the American routes diminish their passage slightly. The Middle East is already the second largest market for BCN’s intercontinental direct seat capacity after the North American market. However, it is the 4th market in terms of O&D passage. CONCENTRATION. Spain (Jan - Dec 2012) Europe + Intercontinental (Jan - Dec 2012) Interannual var. (%) Fuente: Elaboración GPA a partir de datos de AENA / Source: GPA using AENA data • Important traffic increases of Vueling (+35%), Ryanair (+50%) and easyJet (+7.3%). They are the biggest beneficiaries of the collapse of Spanair at Barcelona (January 2012) and the airlines that have accumulated the largest absolute traffic increases. The demise of Spanair has no discernible effect on the total growth of Barcelona or destinations served, as other airlines (especially Vueling) absorb most of its route map and passengers. Progressive market concentration in the top 3 airlines at the airport. They already carry 52% of total passengers, when in 2011 these top 3 airlines carried 40% of all airport passengers. • Drops in traffic for all the Spanish destinations in the top 15. Traffic falls especially in the routes of MAD (-18%) and PMI (-11%), driven by falling demand, the demise of Spanair and Air Europa’s withdrawal from Barcelona (-25% passengers, 15% of winter capacity in BCN in the Winter season of 2012). Iberia does not grow on the route MADBCN despite reduced competition, but slows down (-4.5%) its fall of recent years. Iberia does not compensate for the loss of combined capacity of Spanair and Air Europa in the MAD route, partly because of labour unrest in the company. • Good performance of the European destinations and airlines. LGW shows a specially large growth (+43% pax); it is a route dominated by easyJet. In addition to the top 3 airlines, the companies that accumulate the largest growth margins are also low cost (Norwegian, Transavia, easyJet Swiss). Significant growth of Norwegian (+47%), in its European expansion phase. The major European carriers maintain their weight. PERSPECTIVES FOR 2013 • The good results of 2012 (35.1 M passengers, 2.2% growth) should not make you forget that 2013 will be a complicated year for BCN. The result in the last term of 2013 (-5% of passengers, -8% in capacity) and the planned capacity for the summer of 2013 forecast that it will be very hard to keep the 35 million passengers by 2013. • The capacity for the winter season 2012/13 fell in 5% and it is expected to fall more than 5.5% in summer 2013. European traffic is likely to diminish in this year as well, driven by capacity reductions of Ryanair (-22%) and easyJet (-11%). This is a very volatile passenger demand, extremely sensitive to price. This trend may be partially compensated by the strong capacity increase of Norwegian and Vueling’s increased destinations, but the forecast is not encouraging. • However, the O&D intercontinental traffic is likely to maintain its numbers or rise: The European legacy carriers and the Middle East airlines bet on BCN as a source of demand for their flights, especially the intercontinental ones. Qatar Airways (+40%) and Emirates (+100%) are the fastest growing airlines (between them account for 50% of the increased capacity for BCN’s S13), yet are still far away from the capacity offered by major European airlines; these have also increased their capacity from BCN towards their hubs for the summer of 2013. There is a slight decrease in capacity to the Americas but cancellations tend to be offset in part by increases in capacity from other carriers. Vueling contributes significantly to BCN’s intercontinental traffic, increasing its offer by more than 120%. • According to IATA passengers grew by 5.3% in Europe during 2012 (BCN +2.2%; Spain -5%) although air freight fell 2.9% (BCN -0.1%; Spain -3.3%). European growth is driven by the increase in long-haul demand. This matches with the increase of the routes of Barcelona towards major hubs in Europe and the Middle East, and the fall of its domestic traffic. • ACI highlights the difference in growth between the countries of the Eurozone, with downward trends, and peripheral European countries where traffic is clearly growing, especially in Turkey and Russia. Madrid - Barajas Airport is the only major European airport that lost traffic in 2012; Istanbul grows enough to place itself at MAD’s level of passage. / Connection passengers counted from the airport’s point of view, once when they land and once when they leave the airport. • Barcelona has established itself as the fourth city in terms of Origin and Destination passengers (O&D) in Europe, beating Madrid clearly and tying with Rome, a city that is served by two airports (FCO and CIA). • According to the data from the global distribution systems (MIDT) Barcelona connectivity decreases strongly in 2012, and places itself at half the value observed in 2011. The loss of Spanair affects this point very clearly. However, there is a significant proportion of hidden connectivity in BCN as the connection made by companies like Vueling or self-connectivity by passengers buying two airline tickets does not appear in the MIDT statistics. • IATA says that cargo shifted to emerging economies; this has caused a shift to bulk goods, causing an upward trend of shipping over air transport. Western economies are in a (relatively) weak position and have not contributed significantly to the typical demand of air cargo. • IATA made a positive forecast for 2013: it forecasts growth in air traffic and industry profits; without being excellent yet, these are recovering. • Kerosene prices remain high, impacting negatively on the profitability of the airline industry. • Barcelona has a market share of 18.1% of the total passengers of the Spanish airports, behind Madrid (23.3%). Barcelona has grown by 2.2% in 2012 while the Spanish market plunged 5%, driven mainly by the poor performance of MAD (-9%). • The weight of BCN is growing in the Spanish market share towards all markets. Barcelona represents 18% of the Spanish market in 2012, when its weight was 15% in 2010. Its market share has grown by 3 points in the Spanish and European routes, while it has grown by 2 points in the intercontinental traffic. Barcelona ha crecido un 2,2% en 2012 mientras que el mercado español se hundía un 5%, arrastrado sobretodo por la mala evolución de MAD (-9%). 0% 43.2% 39.8% Other Spanish airports Barcelona 5% 29.1% -1.1% 500.000 Spain - Rest of the World 10% OBSERVATORIO BARCELONA 1.000.000 30.3% 69.7% Domestic Traffic 33.3% 7.9% 2.500.000 1.500.000 10.000.000 0 3.000.000 6.8% Africa Indirect pax (% over total) 0% -2% 35.3% -3.0% North America 2% -4% South America Direct pax Middle East Asia-Pacific Interannual variation (%) Fuente: Elaboración GPA a partir de datos de MIDT / Source: GPA using MIDT data The intercontinental passage of Barcelona continues to grow slowly and already represents 30.3% of the total intercontinental Spanish traffic (1% above 2011, 2% higher than in 2010). • The total O&D intercontinental passenger of Barcelona has grown by 4.6% in 2012. Traffic with Africa and the Middle East grew above the Spanish average. The African market recovery after the Arab Spring traffic falls of 2011. Asia continues growing at a significant pace, similar to the rest of Spain. The passage to North America decreases but less than that of the rest of Spain. However, the evolution of the passage to South America, despite being positive, is markedly lower than the Spanish average. • 64.4% of the intercontinental traffic of Barcelona is still indirect due to the lack of direct routes and frequencies towards intercontinental destinations. Direct intercontinental traffic has increased in the last years, but the percentage of indirect traffic remains at a stable value; There is intercontinental demand to cover. The new flights have stimulated the market but have not been able to absorb the latent demand, leaving potential for further development. interannual variation (%) 81.5% 30.000.000 20.000.000 OBSERVATORIO BARCELONA 19.5% 40.000.000 13.0% 18.6% 3.500.000 60.000.000 passengers passengers 70.000.000 50.000.000 15% 4.500.000 80.000.000 interannual variation (%) 90.000.000 DICIEMBRE 2012 / DECEMBER 2012 LEYENDA / LEGEND Código Aeropuerto Code Airport Código Aeropuerto Code Airport AMS AYT BCN BIO CDG CPH DME FCO FRA IBZ IST LGW LHR LIS MAD MUC MXP ORY PMI SVQ VIE ZHR Amsterdam Antalya Barcelona Bilbao Paris (Charles de Gaulle) Copenhague / Copenhagen Moscú / Moscow (Domodedovo) Roma / Rome (Fiumicino) Frankfurt Ibiza Estambul / Istanbul London (Gatwick) London (Heathrow) Lisboa / Lisbon Madrid Munich Milan (Malpensa) Paris (Orly) Palma de Mallorca Sevilla / Seville Viena / Vienna Zurich Se permite la reproducción total o parcial y los contenidos de este documento sin que sufran modificación alguna y se cite como fuente el “Observatorio de Tráfico Aéreo de Barcelona” Reproduction of the contents of this document is allowed as long as they are not modified and the Barcelona Air Traffic Intelligence Unit is acknowledged as the source. O&D Origen y Destino. Origin and Destination. Passengers that start their route in the mentioned airport/country and finish their route in the second mentioned airport/country. Includes both passengers that travel directly between the two points or that travel via an intermediate (connection) airport. Passengers that pass through one or more intermediate airports between their O&D airports. These passengers are counted twice in airport statistics, once when they land and once when they leave the airport. Passengers that do not pass through any intermediate (connection) airports on their route between the origin and destination airports.
